Best eBay fees calculator?

Question:

Software?  Do you have Excel or any other kind of spreadsheet software?  I calculate all my starting prices based on purchase price, listing fees, paypal fees, final value fees and shipping.  Spreadsheet does it for me. Pretty easey to create the formulas. Joe

I don’t think you should worry about software for tracking fees.  If you are using the bare minimum options to list your items and selling them at a profit then eBay fees aren’t even an issue.  If your fees are "out of control" you may want to reexamine your business strategy.  Good luck. Agreed, if you can’t maintain self control when listing Ebay is not the place for you. — Best Regards Niel Humphreys Snowdon Computers Ltd

The fees are a major issue considering that they most commonly add an immediate 5% to your overhead.  Selling the items at a profit, that is banking away some money after expenses, is the name of game and knowing your Ebay fees is part of that game. But most sellers should be conservative and figure that between Ebay fees, Paypal fees, and other assorted financial fees that a straight 10% will come off your sell price to cover your transaction expenses.  If one is unable to calculate 10% in their head then being in business for yourself is not going to be to your liking. And these transaction fees are only one aspect to determining the cost of doing business on Ebay or elsewhere. In the traditional "brick and mortar" world which I inhabit, the rule of thumb is that for every 100 people who start up a small private business only 5% will still be in business two years hence.  My guess is that for people trying to make a living on Ebay the percentages are about the same for success. It is not about making a profit, it is all about keeping that profit.

Agreed, the best approach is to have a strategy that entails a formula for all expenses surrounding the merchandise you sell.  Knowing what you can get the merchandise for and what the minimum you can sell it for is the key.  I always plan my purchasing price for worst-case scenario when I purchase merchandise to sell on eBay.  I take into consideration that some items may be damaged or not sellable.  I use 50% logic and 50% gut feeling.  This approach has worked extremely well for me. I would never rely 100% on logic or any software that makes the process easier as it’s a recipe for disaster.  This is the same for speeders whom rely solely on their radar detectors and not using their common sense and instincts.  The cops love these people, as they are the easiest to catch.
