Best time to start a 7 day auction?

Question:

You wouldn’t want your auction to be ending 2 PM Tuesday when most people are at work,<

A lot of people surf the internet at work (probably when the boss is not looking) and can check in on the auctions they are interested in at the last minute or so.   Still, evening closings are probably the best.

Response:

I like your comment below. What works best for me on a 7 day is to put the auction up 6 or 7pm on Thursday night PST. If you do a 10 list it on the same day so you get 2 weekends in. Now here is another thing to consider, depending on what you sell, the time listing is different. Do you have anything in mind? I could write a few examples if you are interested. ~ CHEERS ~             Christina D. You will get all kinds of answers.  I’ve listed at various times of the day or night. I often list Saturday and Sunday morning since that is when I have more free time to list things (I need to watch football in the afternoons in the fall)

Many have found that’s the ideal time to close auctions of interest to business people.  It’s the next best thing to BIN for those customers.

Like virtually every other "simple" question asked here, this one doesn’t have a simple answer.  The best time to post auctions depends entirely on what you are selling and who you are selling it to. *If you’re selling something that is hard to find, you may be better off having the auction open and close when there are the most potential bidders browsing the newly-listed or closing auctions.  For consumer items, that may be Sunday night.  For business items, it may be Monday or Tuesday afternoon.  You have to adjust for time zones, too. *If you’re selling something that is common, the busy times may be the *worst* for you.  The larger number of bidders may be offset by the increased competition and lower prices.  When I was selling Atari games, I looked for the slowest evenings of the week and timed my auctions for them because the competition was less and the huge volume of Atari games on eBay  meant that many bidders only browsed the opening and closing auctions. *When selling items, keep in mind that it takes hours for listings to show up in the search engine.  I usually post in two batches, one around 6 p.m. Eastern time so they will show up as Newly Listed around 9 p.m. Eastern time/6 p.m. Pacific time. (There’s no guarantee that they will.)  Then, I post a second batch around 11 p.m., so those will *close* a week later at 11p.m. Eastern time/8 p.m. Pacific time. My auctions are a special case because I auction the same dozen items over and over, which is why I do batches.  I also post seven days a week, so I’ll have auctions opening and closing seven days a week. The only modification I make to my schedule is to post fewer auctions on days that have proved to be slow; perhaps 20-30 auctions instead of 50-60.  On holidays, I dispense with the early batch and post only auctions that open/close later, figuring that I’ll have less competition, and folks will be back at their computers later in the day.

Or might be out doing things and away from the computer. Do a google search and you’ll find dozens of posts on this ng about this topic. I think timing does make a difference and depends on what you’re selling and thus the market of people you’re appealing to. Wednesday evenings work for me; I list between 7 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Pacific. David

It probably depends mostly on what you are selling. I like tuesday and thursday evenings, but others like weekends etc. etc. — Mike

I’ve experimented with this and have never found any pattern.  With the bidding and sniping software that’s available nowadays, people determined to wait until the last minute to place a bid will find a way to do it, regardless of when the auction ends.

I used to end all my auctions on Sunday evening but since I have had so much stuff to sell I have diversified to have midweek endings and found the end prices to be about the same whenever. I even had a brainstorm one week and listed a day early so that all the auctions ended on a Saturday night but the end prices were not seemingly affected…. — Best Regards Niel Humphreys Snowdon Computers
