Question:
Hi all I have bought a few things from time to time on ebay and have a feedback of 12. I now want to sell some items, initially just as a good alternative to a car boot sale. I have been looking into this for some time and following this newsgroup so I can avoid the worst newbie mistakes. I may look into selling on a more regular basis in the future but need to do a lot more research to see if there is anything I can sell that would make me a worthwhile profit. Would you ebay regulars recommend that I use my current ID (colsy) for selling, or should I sell with a new ID. The latter means of course a feedback of 0, whereas at least my current ID shows I am a responsible buyer. Thanks for any help Colette — Colette A. O’Brien

O’Brien Hi Colette, I started off on eBay as a buyer, in June 2000, gained a feedback of 26. Then at the beginning of last year, I started selling the odd thing I came across. Then for the last 3-4 months I have been selling seriously, and have now boosted my feedback to 233 (still small compared to others), But 3 quarters of that feedback is a seller. My advice would be to start selling from your present ID, as yes you already have feedback. I personally, find I am cautious of buying from a nil feedback seller and avoid. You could set up a new ID, and mention in your auction listings the other ID, so people can view the feedback that way. End of the day do what you feel is right for you. Kaz

You don’t pay taxes in the UK either for sales of your own stuff. I will use my existing ID for selling for the moment. If I decide to try ebay selling as a business, I might then use a different ID. Thanks for all who replied. Regards Colette — Colette A. O’Brien

Yeah, me too. No reason for a separate i.d. unless you’re going to want things tidy for taxes, and (in the US, at least, and I haven’t heard that it’s different in the UK) you don’t pay taxes on stuff of your own that you sell, probably, for less than you paid for it. I got a second i.d. fairly recently. I use the almost-no-feedback one for buying and selling stuff my own household stuff. For tax-related stuff, I use the one with more feedback. Bonita
