Question:
Aargh – I’m getting sick and tired of people that send me a check with NO information as to what auction it’s for. I ask for two pieces of info when I send my confirmation to the winning bidder: "PLEASE include your full mailing address inside your envelope as well as the auction item’s description or number (info on the envelope or check is NOT adequate!)" and "Thanks and please acknowledge this email as per eBay guidelines! It is a MAJOR help if you reply with your address to make it easier to print an accurate packing label." It doesn’t appear that I have any reply by a person with the name on the check, so I can’t match up the auction that way. So I have to figure out from the AMOUNT of the check as to which auction it was for, further compounded by the buyer likely rounding up to an even number. What a waste of time! I want to scream… jon —

ok, matched up the envelope zip code with the confirmation. Should have done this first. Live and learn. jon —

My reply to my reply. On top of it all, the guy sent a $20 MO for a $10 item. I gave him two shipping choices (Priority $4.75 or Media rate: $2.26). Since it’s just as easy to get the MO with the exact amount, am I supposed to assume he’s being charitable and wants it priority and I should "keep the change"?? I’ll issue a refund, of course, and waste even more of my time. jon —

That’s OK….you needed to vent. I get very few of those, but my sales are all over the board, so it’s easy to match things up. What I really don’t like is the person who prints out the auction and sends it along with their payment…..sometimes, four pages of an auction printout. Sheesh. I feel guilty throwing that tree away. I’d be worried he send you the wrong MO, and someone got one for $14.75 Kris

That’ll work till the next one comes, who sends it from work and the zip code doesn’t match the home zip code he’s given eBay, generally paying with a money order so you can’t even figure out any information from that.

I’m not *quite* that bad (I don’t think). I routinely send a "payment is on its way" email whenever I have to snailmail a check or money order; the info includes item number and description, my name, eBay ID, and shipping address, and a comment that I’ll leave appropriate feedback when the item is received and hope the seller will do the same. I print a copy of that letter and send it along with the check. Seems to work well thus far. — Ty Who is mostly just a slightly skewed Donna Reed This address is white-listed. That’s a good thing. I just hate throwing away four, color-printed pages with images and all…..and usually no writing on them, either. Kris

What makes childhood happy? Parental harmony? Good health? Security? Might not a happy childhood be the worst possible preparation for life? Like leading a lamb to the slaughter."

Just put the cash difference in the package. It’s not likely to be a real time drain, is it? Deborah Stevenson

I had one recently round up the amount on a money order with no information about the auction. That was fun trying to track down. (The extra 15 cents did not compensate for the extra time.)

I have people do that a lot…also no auction number, no item description, return address is often illegible in any form so I have to email the buyer (if I can decipher their name) to get it…this after all my ebay EOA correspondence has in caps "please print out this page and include it with payment, and email me your mailing address." — "By the way, if one day you happen to wake up and find yourself in an existential quandary full of loathing and self doubt and racked with the pain and isolation of your pitiful meaningless existence, at least you can take a small bit of comfort in knowing that somewhere out there in this crazy old mixed up universe of ours there’s still a little place called…Albuquerque!" –Weird Al Yankovic, "Albuquerque" Visit my ebay page http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/raystantz

Yeah, guess not. Will put a fiver in. Usually if the buyer uses PayPal that’s how I refund if necessary. jon —

Exactly. That’s why I say "please acknowledge this email as per eBay guidelines!" I don’t _require_ a reply, but folks that do reply are less likely – in my experience – to end up being an NPB’er. Plus when they do reply, they usually do so with their address which I can just cut and paste to print out a label. Every few seconds I can save in processing an auction is important. jon —
