Dig This: The PayPal Notice

Question:

"You are encouraged to apply for the Merchant Rate if you increase your PayPal transaction volume to average over $1,000 per month. Alternately, you may apply for the Merchant Rate if you can provide proof of a competitive offer from an established merchant services provider." So, I have the cheaper rate with BillPoint, $2000 per transaction, up to $10,000 month acceptance (although believe me, I’m not even in that ballpark!) Credit Card Transaction < $15.00 = $0.35 (and no deposit fee) Credit Card Transaction $15.00 = 1.75% + $0.35 per transaction. Ya think PayPal will accept this as a "competititve offer"? We’ll see. —         Mac (doogle)

Response:

I was thinking the same thing, but I think I know what their answer will be.  In my sole opinion, PayPal has decided that the small time seller isn’t worth fooling with, and they’ve decided to concentrate on people who either do a substantial volume, or are willing to push all their business through PayPal.  Billpoint went in the other direction, and extended their Merchant Account status to anyone who did any volume at all. I’m going to ask PayPal whether they consider Billpoint to be an "established merchant services provider", and see what they say.  I don’t plan to post again until the second week in July, and unless I get some assurance that my rates won’t go up, I’m going to remove paypal as a payment option.  It simply doesn’t pay to chase after someone who really doesn’t want your business. I would think that PayPal sees Billpoint as their main competitor. Peter

Response:

I’d agree, but I bet they say that a billpoint merchant account doesn’t count to qualify you for their lower tier fees.  I could be wrong, and I hope I am, but I don’t think so. I think paypal has decided that they don’t really want the business of sellers like me, and if that’s the case I’ll use their competition exclusively.  I liked the idea of supporting an independent payment service, because I don’t like eBay owning everything auction related, but if they don’t want the business of sellers like me who want to give their customers a variety of payment options, then I’ll take my business elsewhere.
