Question:
I see some domain names for sale at obscene prices. Does anyone really pay for these things, or are these offered by some kid with dreams of a moron coming along saying "Hey, I just GOT to have that name for my website". I’ve seen some really outrageous prices for some of those domain names on Yahoo, not as many on EBay.
I doubt they’re very hot commodities. I actually saw one the other day where a guy had about 5 auctions up for the SAME domain name (Officialsiteofthevirginmary.com or something). That’d be a neat trick.
Response:
If you notice, these thing rarely sell for any significant money. I suspect that these people are using Ebay to market other services or to tout the domain names through other venues. They probably tell people "Hey, were selling it on Ebay for $100,000 but you can have it for HALF!" That kind of thing. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I see some domain names for sale at obscene prices. I have seen starting prices at $50 million. I put my domain name up. Started it at $5000, don’t care whether I sell it or not. Still making money with it. Asking price is aboutr 25% of the gross revenue from last year. I had ab idea to do something but no money to make it real. -*MORT*-

Dreamers who haven’t done any research. They think that people are buying a name when they pay a lot of money for one. But they are buying a business. business.com which sold for millions, wasn’t sold for the name but for all the work that was put into it. Whether those who made that site made any money over their costs, I don’t know. amazon.com ? If you bought that you would think its only worth a few bucks. Nothing special about that name. But if you knew what business it makes, you could get $100M for it I bet. But then amazon wouldn’t be making anything cause they spent far more on it.

Excellent point. The kids who try to make spinoffs of famous sites that make a lot of money often don’t know it includes the site content too. I got a few offers on my site, not thru the auction, one guy said for m to write a check myself but I dont want to sell because of all that work I put into it.

In the City where I live, recently, this 20 year old guy read about all these sports complexes and other businesses that were opening, checked to see if they already had websites, and upon finding they did not, he immediately went and registered what he assumed would be their obvious choices for domain names…At $70.00 per site registration costs (and he registered not only the .com names but also the .org and .net), he spent thousands of dollars and then turned around and offered to sell the sites to the businesses for huge amounts of money….Each and every business turned him down and they did it PUBLICLY, via the newspapers! Before you buy.
