Question:
Pretty sad, especially the way they tout the Paypal as "quasi- cash" and indicate that $20 charges have been reported to apply when using it. This, apparently was a glitch early on and–to my knowledge–has been fixed. eBay’s doing a great job of shooting itself in the foot here, especially if people respond negatively to how heavy-handed they are being about this. ? * Sent from RemarQ http://www.remarq.com The Internet’s Discussion Network * The fastest and easiest way to search and participate in Usenet – Free!

Even I didn’t think eBay could or would sink to the level they did when they issued the ‘buyer’s payment’ guide. I’m sure many here know enough to look at this and find it as upsetting as I found it. http://pages.ebay.com/help/buyerguide/paymenttips.html
FUD. Sounds like they’ll frighten the naive in order to drive newbies to billpoint. After looking that over, I did the only logical thing – signed up with PayPal. I can’t wait to spend some of that quasi-cash… – David –
Response:
I don’t like the way this is emphasized as a "feature:" —– Full credit card protection; buyers have the right to dispute charges on their statement if the purchased goods do not arrive or if they are damaged. —– So rather than just try to "talk it out," it’s emphasized that the buyer should cancel and the seller gets stiffed for some fee, like $10-$20!! This is the only thing that is keeping me from getting involved in any of these rackets (aside from the fact that I can’t get involved with most, since they are US-only). With the vast majority of my merchandise, where I’m making only a buck or three, I can’t afford getting whalloped with some massive credit card charge backs.
Response:
It is also interesting that I couldn’t find a similar comparison chart for Sellers… – David –
Response:
I say to heck with ‘em both! Stick with the old-fashioned method of checks/MOs. If you really want to do credit cards, there’s other places to go (they unfortunately charge you, but they’re better than either BillPoint or PayPal). — Jesse Sikes www.agape.cc See my eBay auctions!

I have been a member/seller/buyer of the ebay community since June 1998. It’s wonderful to see Ebay brand me as a potential criminal just because I only accept checks and money orders. Like many of the people on ebay I have close to 900 on my feedback rating, with zero negs. Much thanks to Mike W. for bringing this to our attention. Tomorrow when I cool off I will write a letter to ebay on this subject. Question is which of the many addy’s they use is the right one to send it to? Ebay’s screwed anyway you look at it. They took too long developing an on-line payment system and it came in costing too much. X.com and Paypal are essentially free services and, at least in the transactions that I’ve had, work pretty well. I think Paypal is more popular because it doesn’t have the "banking" features of x.com so people don’t have to provide the detailed info that is demanded with a real bank. But, with the merger, I suspect that will soon change. Still, until Billpoint becomes a free service (and I bet it will) x.com/Paypal is going to eat it’s lunch no matter how much Ebay "bad mouths" it. says… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Even I didn’t think eBay could or would sink to the level they did when they issued the ‘buyer’s payment’ guide. Ebay is nothing but a big flea market. Since when does anyone expect to use a credit card in a flea market? Looks like ebay is positioning itself to be a full-blown credit card provider. Maybe they will buy Visa.
Response:
Does anyone know a Paypal addy that can be used to send this chart to? It seems that they need to have their name cleared. If that $20. fee doesn’t apply to them or any of the other quasi services, they need to take some action. Sparkling
Response:
Did you notice the part about : "Sellers who accept credit cards are generally charged a fee for each credit card transaction, though some services may temporarily waive those fees or offer other incentives to sellers." Are they talking about the Free Listing Day? or Visa freebie Offer? Definitely misleading the buyer….merchant cards offer nothing of the sort. An occasional Ebay freebie doesn’t make up for the extra charges. It’s a matter of time folks. With all of this type of promotion going on, the ease in which they can use the search page for Billpoint sellers and quickness of getting payment to the seller at auction end ……tell me……which method do you think the buyer is going to choose? Sparkling

If we as sellers boycott Bilkpoint in favor of other services like PayPal, it won’t leave the buyers any choice…
Response:
True, and while I plan to boycott it myself, there are plenty of lemming-like sellers out there who will sign up for it. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – If we as sellers boycott Bilkpoint in favor of other services like PayPal, it won’t leave the buyers any choice…

An interesting tactic. They singled out PayPal. They ignored the Consumer Protection laws. They include alarmist BS. And the bit about the quasi-cash fees is an outright lie. Aside – The credit card companies (Visa, Mastercard, Novus, AmEx, Diners, etc) have all been abuzz with how eCash is the wave of the future! And they’re going to fully support it! Methinks the FTC, et al, should be interested in eBay’s advertizing claims… I DEFINITELY will not use BillPoint with tactics like this, and I’m going to have to start looking elsewhere for some listings. sigh. To coin that sig… Tis a dark ride. I must say… Legal issues notwithstanding… I never expected eBay to schtoop this low. This is sleazy immoral mudslinging. Very disappointing. – Dan. — – South Jersey, USA, Earth <http://users.snip.net/~darmok – How come Silly Putty only comes in one flavor?

My reaction being much the same as the rest. I’ve found that most people are generally honest, and almost all have been with me. As for how payment is made, that is between me and the buyer/seller, no one else. Do anything else, using "services" such as have been mentioned, drives my costs up, not down. Until that trend swings the other way, nothing shall change with the way I do business. I finally entered the world of paying bills without writing checks, something I always wanted to do. Why? I was finally offered this "service" for free. If it stops being "free", I’ll write checks. If I were new to this, what they have posted would indeed have the effect of "scaring" me into their "service". It’s similar to the "services" some credit cards offer. You pay them a fee, and they will make your minimum payment if you cannot work. Well, they base your "fee" on a percentage of what you owe. The cost can be $30 or more a month. Consumer Reports did a thing on this the other night. They said, stay away from it, it costs too much. I take checks and money orders folks. So far, none of you have let me down. That’s good enough for me. Good old fashioned honesty. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Even I didn’t think eBay could or would sink to the level they did when they issued the ‘buyer’s payment’ guide. You’re right, it sucks. It’s self-serving propaganda, designed for eBay to make even more money off of its sellers via Bilkpoint, which I will not sign up for. As far as looking for other listings goes, where?
