Ending Auction Early

Question:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Yes, you are right. This was in another thread, but it belongs in this one too. But, "Authoritarian", "Totalitarian", the "need to control", in the long run these types of attitudes create a scenario that is fatal to business. That is what I was thinking of when I used the term "Berlin Wall", which was an attempt to control-it stands to me as a symbol of controlling others by force. Freedom is essential for business to work. What Ebay is doing is trying to control and manipulate heck, I can’t even discuss other business with people who buy off Ebay from me, one of the very reason scores of people are on the site and why it has been so successful. Business people are going to go elsewhere to meet and do business. Ebay wants every dime and they will end up losing scores of dollars because of their idiotic idea that they’ve got to get every dime of business there is. The truth is, in a capitalistic society, the more money that flows, the more money there is to go around. Ebay has what I call the "small town" mentality, the belief that there are only so many dollars, and if they don’t grab all they can get, they will lose out. Booming economies work because more money begets more money and more prosperity. Ebay has lost site of what it is doing. The business model has become a failure. Sell your stock before it is too late.

Their management is grossly incompetent. I’d like to attribute it to criminal activity, but honestly I think it is criminal stupidity. Their management is doing one tried and tested act of corporate idiocy after another – starting with thinking they are auctioneers and trying to buy the real thing – and now they are at the point where they can’t even run their business properly. Geez, Lois, ebay may rule your world, but in mine this is *not* illegal by any stretch of the imagination. I am not condoning trying to screw ebay, but it seems to me that they can’t even trust us enough to simply have kept the lines of communication open between potential buyers and sellers. If you use reason #2 it cancels all your bids.  If you want to end the auction early and sell to the current high bidder there is no choice that reflects that. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Ending Your Listing Early Select one reason for ending your listing early. You can go to this site: www.auctionguild.com He talks about ways of setting up your own opt in user lists to defeat Ebays stupid attempts to prevent you from doing any othe business with your own customers.  (If they’re a venue, then how can they  "own" the customer). Ebay really doesn’t think with logic, the think with $$$ on their minds, which precludes logical thinking-long term they will lose the $$$ because of this thinking. Ebays current business model is on a death train-they’re taking the company straight into the sewer.

HMM, I guess Vrane can come up with that one, item is no longer available for sale, and do the Power Bomber auto Reserve thingy, or whatever they called it. Posted on the Announcements Board on 3/14: *** End Auction Early Feature Enhancements *** In direct response to a Community suggestion, we are updating the End My Auction Early feature to improve usability and provide more information regarding listings that have been ended early. The new enhancements streamline the reporting process for sellers while also providing more information to bidders. As part of the process, sellers will be asked to select a reason for ending their listing early. This reason will be posted to the closed View Item page. In addition to the reporting process, we also will automatically cancel all bids for sellers if item being ended is no longer available to sell. Please be aware that the improvements to the End Auction Early feature will not be fully operational for a couple of days until the changes have been completely released to the site. In order to use this enhanced feature, access it by simply clicking on the "site map" at the top of any eBay page and then select "End my auction early" under the "Manage My Items for Sale" heading. Thanks to all the buyers and sellers who suggested these changes!

Have they lost their minds?  What in the world is the reason for this?  What if we get a high bidder and are happy with the price, we still have to make them wait? They say "thanks to all the buyers and sellers who suggested this".  What sellers would care? Paranoia now reigns supreme at Ebay.  They must all be smoking crack over there. I think the Vrane "Bomb Auction" tool caused them to do this, I think it scared them out of their minds and now they’re running around like chickens with their heads cut off doing truly nutty stuff. They truly have gone completely paranoid about losing money and are trying to use every tool to get every last dime they can-in the process destroying a good thing-a good thing for themselves. I once worked at UPS and don’t like some of the corporate policy, but they had a motto that "we don’t care if we get scammed by a few customers, most people are basically honest."  UPS was right, most people are.  The people at Ebay apparently don’t think that about us, their sellers, they think we’re all crooks out to hoodoo them. When the time comes, I’m jumping ship. Oh well, little strokes…..

I am a newbie at selling. I have an item that has NO BIDS and will end in less than 2 days. I know people wait sometimes until the very last minute to bid but now I am getting scared that it will go for the bare minimum. My questions are, if I cancel this auction, is it a mark against my eBay account or anything? Is it that big of a deal to cancel considering I have NO bids so far? Thanks for any comments.

You can cancel an auction at any time for any of four stated reasons, but it is usually very dumb to do so. Under the uniform commercial code, you are, of course, obligated to sell your item at your closing price. Not doing so is an actionable offense with civil and possibly criminal penalties. It is also totally chicken shit. You NEVER list an auction item for less than you are willing to accept for it. — Many thanks, Don Lancaster Synergetics   3860 West First Street  Box 809  Thatcher, AZ 85552 Please visit my GURU’s LAIR web site at http://www.tinaja.com

NEVER list an auction for less than you’re willing to sell     the item for.   You can put a reserve on an item, a nicely-priced     BIN, or an appropriating starting price.     ALWAYS set your bid price to cover your fees and what you     paid for the item (unless it’s something you found around the     house, in which case you search completed auctions and     see what they usually sell for). You are free to end the auction at any time for any reason — it doesn’t "count against you" in any way. If it does have bids by the time you end it, be sure to cancel all bids or you will be obligated to sell to the highest bidder.

You’ve told her what NOT to do, but what should she do now? Is it possible to add a reserve price to an auction after it starts but before bids come in?  How?

Response:

I ran into a similar problem and was able to add a reserve price. Didn’t know that it was an option at the time but decided to try anyway. I think as long as you have over the 12 hr. minimum left with no bids you can change it.  Gladly it hit and went over the reserve.

Yes. The link is called "revise auction" and it’s on EVERY eBay auction page.   It can be done as long as there are no bids, and the auction isn’t within 12 hours of ending. She can also change the starting price. It would have been nice to see the auction, because we don’t know if she started it at $.01 or at a high price that will never get a bid anyway. Kris

I agree, but I do note in some of my bigger ticket auctions that I will cancel an auction which has no bids with a only a few hours remaining to force the hands of the snipers and get some action going. Happy Trails Johpa

Thanks bp and holly for the help needed. I really did not want to ‘cancel’ if there was another option. Also, I did not know (until now) if canceling had a negative effect on my eBay account. And, being "new" at this selling thing, I did not realize that I could add a "reserve" to an "already started" auction. As far as what I did do, I added a reserve price. Thanks!
