Question:
Old clock ads do not sell. Old car ads such as for 1960’s & 1970’s collectible type vehicles seem to do alright at times.

Opinions sought. A seller with an ok feedback record suddenly changed his user ID just after I won an auction. Also, I noticed that his feedback was suddenly loaded with new comments from a jewerly auctioneer, all the items sold in Dutch auctions for just a couple of bucks with no descriptions. The auctions for which my guy is listed as a buyer also has a few other buyers listed in common, as if the auctions were an attempt to bolster the feedback listings. Am I being paranoid here???
Maybe you are being paranoid. I changed my ID because some people were offended by my old ID. I also have 65 feedbacks from one seller. Does that make me a shill? No, it just means that I like doing business with that seller and that I buy things for resale. :I think you’re being paranoid. It looks like he is buying items on eBay :for resale. If you look at the Dutch auctions, he is buying multiples :I’m not saying it’s impossible, but it doesn’t look fishy to me. : The guy has 5 positives in a row from a NARU member…. : then another 5 from one person…. and out of 12 unique : members, one is NARU and one left a negative. : Doesn’t look like a good record to me! : I wouldn’t have bid on this auction. agreed to do the transaction through I-escrow, so I should be OK. If you look at the Dutch auctions, he is buying multiples of everything, which would drive up the eBay fees if it were a scam, but which would make sense if he were buying for resale. I sell magazines ads (they go cheap) and I had a guy buy 4 from me. I was afraid to post 4 feedbacks cause it would look like I was padding his feedback! I don’t think you need to worry. DonnaB

Donna! I’m glad you mentioned that. I’ve got some old magazines that as a group won’t bring much. I was thinking I might cut them up and try selling some ads. What kinds of ads do you find do well? And what’s the best way to take or cut them from the magazine? Angie

I’ve sold a few from the thirties and forties, the only ads that sold at all seemed to be for fountain pens and light bulbs. I’ve got a number of perfume ads, and I can’t give them away. Mine came in a mixed lot already cut from the magazine. I’ve done really well with advertising specialties that dealt with oil companies, but I’ve never tried a magazine ad for an oil company. I’d be awfully tempted if I was cutting up old magazines to look for those first. Richard Ward – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Donna! I’m glad you mentioned that. By oil companies, do you mean gas stations? Angie

Response:
Well, not technically, since most gas stations aren’t owned by the oil companies that own the name, i.e., your local Texaco or Shell station is probably owned by an individual or company that has an agreement with the oil company that allows them to operate a Texaco or Shell station providing they buy all their gas from Texaco or Shell, and follow other terms and conditions. The kinds of things I have sold have been advertising specialties with the oil company logo on it, ash trays for example. These items were generally given away or sold as part of an oil company promotion at affiliated stations. The ones that get particularly good prices are generally oil companies that went out of business or were absorbed into larger oil companies. For example, I had a couple of Frankoma ashtrays a while back with GLOCO on them (a trade name for the Good Luck Oil Company). Changed an $8 item into a $35 item. Current oil companies do fine too if the marks or name predate the current logo, i.e., Esso or Enco as opposed to Exxon. I’ve never sold magazine ads that were oil related, but I’ve done very well with anything else oil company related.
