Fraud on online- auctions

Question:

I am doing a research on Fraud and would like to chat with people who has experienced it either as a buyer or a seller. Please send me a mail. A question I have for all of you is: Why should victims of fraud use the feedback or/and complain system at ebay instead of just contacting the police and put the scam artist in prison? After the scam artist is in prison theres no need for feedback and complain systems, or? My question is why have them at all when there’s polices out there? Regards, Jan

Easy:   they should do both, depending upon the dollar value. Under YOUR system, you want to protect scammers until they’re caught, as no one would leave negative feedback. Bad, bad reasoning. Kris

Besides, with all the thousands of people on eBay, imagine what would happen if everyone who felt cheated called the police first before trying to arbitrate through eBay channels.  There aren’t enough police for all of them… -Bertha — Frat Guy: Thanks for the loan, man.  Our sound system sucks. Because the police won’t put people in prisin over a civil matter. Don’t believe me? Send me a laptop computer. Pentium 4, maxed out, DVD, etc. I’ll send you $10 grand the day I receive the laptop. If I don’t just TRY and put me in jail. Evan To reply, remove TheObvious from my e-mail address.

Contacting the police does not end the matter; there’s the court system, differing jurisdictions, the time, money and effort to collect a judgment, and so forth. In all but the most extreme cases, it may not be cost effective for the average buyer to pursue an eBay case through the entire legal system. They can protect themselves better by doing a chargeback through their credit card company, for example. — David

1) very few police perform quite the service you suggest 2) that doesn’t get your money back 3) it doesn’t have to be either/or Deborah Stevenson

Listen to the man  –  unless you know the seller always use a credit card, either to the seller direct or thru paypal or like If a seller insists on cash or MO don’t do business with him unless you are willing to take the chance of a loss
