Question:
How many of you sellers would like the option of setting your own auction end time rather than the fixed periods eBay set? I like the idea that I can create an auction for one, three or seven days, but I would much prefer the flexibility of listing my auctions with an end time that is somewhere in-between without having to time them. If eBay allows 1-day and 7 day auctions, why not allow me to set an auction end just before I open the doors to my business on Monday or whatever date and time I think is best for me? If they charge the extra dime, then what would be wrong with sellers having the choice to close an auction at any date and time between 1 and ten days. It certainly shouldn’t affect eBay any. So what if I make my auction six days, seven hours instead of seven days or three days one hour instead of three days? Buck — For what it’s worth.

Doing it the present way might help even out the load on their servers. You don’t get 1,000,000 auctions closing at exactly 7:00 pm PST or whatever. You can essentially do that already by using the starting time option.

Well, sorta… you can’t start the auction as soon as you list it and have it listed for 4 days. I have done what you suggested for three and five day auctions because I couldn’t set the end time otherwise. Buck — For what it’s worth.

Just set the starting time, and the end time will be whatever you want it to. — Many thanks, Don Lancaster Synergetics 3860 West First Street Box 809 Thatcher, AZ 85552 Please visit my GURU’s LAIR web site at http://www.tinaja.com

Indeed, the present "scheduled start time" option might be a test to see if sellers tend to cluster around specific endings days/times. If eBay decides that the SST suggests no bias, or that it does, but they can handle it, then they may well elect to make the SST include arbitrary end-times as well. — http://www.access-one.com/rjn email4rjn AT yahoo DOT com NOT speaking for any employer, client or Internet Service Provider.

Someone will correct me if I am wrong, but I believe that you can start a ten-day auction, wait a day, then change it to a seven-day auction, thus giving the seller an auction that is 9 days long.

Time-consuming? I still follow the ancient ways, where just about everything a computer does is done by a timed script…

How does one make a timed script like that? There are a few automated things I’d like to do.

That would be awesome…an optional, built-in "extra 60 seconds" after the "POSTED" auction end-time if theres a bid within 60 seconds of the original end of auction. Very sneaky
I like it…snipers would despise it. Dan – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – How many of you sellers would like the option of setting your own auction end time rather than the fixed periods eBay set?

You misinterpreted the OP, which simply suggested (see title) that sellers should be able to choose their own end times. I think that’s a great idea. Being able to add a secret extension is a rotten idea. Snipers would despise it for about a week, until the developers of sniping software modified their programs to accommodate it. Non-snipers, on the other hand, would be left clueless. eBay dreams up enough silly complications on its own without having users suggest more. Please, let’s leave well enough alone! I think it’s time to declare a moratorium on the sniping debate, and on all related topics, such as auction extensions. Ten years, say, would work for me. Of course, if anyone mentions these topics during the first year after the moratorium expires, the moratorium will automatically be renewed for a year.
