Question:

About the only thing I’ve done like that is called my husband "buddy" (I call my son that).  I’ve only had a kid though for 4.5 years.  Wait then again I do sometimes cut Brad’s sandwiches in neat little squares for him :) Elke Got questions?  Get answers over the phone at Keen.com. Response:

I always found myself saying things like "nite-nite" to grownups when my kids were little.  Or filling a glass only halfway up when I had company.  At least I never put a sippy lid on anybody’s cup!  Well, except for my kids’ cups

I often find myself filling glasses halfway–my brother will remind me that he’s 35 and can handle a full one.  I’ve also caught myself moving a shopping cart back and forth while standing in line, even when I didn’t have any of my children with me.

Response:

Yeah I can understand that for the offline readers.  I could also maybe put an auction in there where they can send me their address and I can enter it myself.  It would then do all the same stuff as sending them the email with their totals and all. I questioned my current customers on whether or not they liked the checkout and all but one said that they loved it.  The one who didn’t like it found it impersonal.  I think what I’m going to do is continue to use it but I’ll send them a personalized letter too.  I mentioned this in another post somewhere…. Elke — Got questions?  Get answers over the phone at Keen.com. Up to 100 minutes free! http://www.keen.com

Response:

It’s nothing to do with security. I just don’t see making the extra step to respond through a checkout when I can just e-mail the seller my address. That’s just me. If I am reading my mail off-line how in the heck am I going to click on a link to get to a checkout? I’d have to tell my DH to get off the phone so that I can checkout. It’s just easier to reply to and e-mail and then send it next time I go online. Kimberly

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I personally never use the check out and don’t offer it as part of my congrats letter. If someone send me to their checkout and I see that they use paypal then I will just beam them the money. If they don’t use paypal then I just e-mail them my mailing address and ask where to send the payment and that I won’t use the checkout. I know that sounds like I’m being a pain in the butt, but I don’t like the checkout and won’t use it. Sorry. I think the idea of an online checkout system is good.  But I have yet to see one built for auctions that I was really comfortable with. Perhaps I’m a bit pickier than most folx.  But over the years, I’ve seen a lot of companies come and go.  The risk of giving a fly-by-night access to my credit card (as a customer), or my bank account (as a merchant), gives me the willies. I approached PayPal with the same trepidation, esp since it was such a young company.  Beat its interface up, making sure they’re passing SSL certificates properly, etc.  Then looked into the company itself – verified that what they said on their web site was actually real.  So far so good.  And except for the slowness (caused by the flood from that damnable article in the WSJ), I’ve been reasonably satisfied with ‘em. – Dan. — – South Jersey, USA, Earth  <http://hamsterdance.com/ – My mind not only wanders, sometimes it leaves completely.

Okay I took some suggestions and redid the winning bidder notice, here is an example.  One thing I forgot to mention too earlier, is that someone mentioned that they could only access the third step, that is because the person had already filled out the checkout and I removed their info so that their address couldn’t be seen.

You mean that until you removed the data, their address et al was visible to anyone??????? Uh oh. [snip]  Congratulations and thank you for bidding on my auction. To help expedite the receival of your item please follow these

No such word as "receival". [snip] Click this link to reach the checkout: http://www.auctionrover.com/c.asp [snip] So what do you guys think?

Fix your grammar. Then consider:  The page that Auctionrover’s .asp generates is so badly formatted I could not read the information presented (see my previous reply).  If someone like myself – whoze been around, etc – can’t see what I’d need to complete one of your auctions…. How will a newbie AOLer do it?  Or anyone else that isn’t running the specific browser (and version, and platform) that that .asp file requires? – Dan. — – South Jersey, USA, Earth  <http://hamsterdance.com/ – My mind not only wanders, sometimes it leaves completely.

Don’t take this the wrong way, but I am always hesitant to click on links emailed to me by otherwise anonymous people.  I’m always afraid I’m helping them with some sort of MLM scam, referal bonus, or something.  You’re right, she should have read the message, but I’m sure she just scanned it looking for the address.  I used to work as a trainer for computer software, and believe me, newbies get one thing in their head (like finding an address in this case) and everything else looks like greek to them.

Response:

You may just want to add your address to that email rather than your customer having to go to the web. Some people download their mail and read it off line. I agree.  If I’d gotten this email, I would have asked the same thing.   I would never click on that link, esp considering all the bad grammar. Goto.com is now owned by Microsoft, I believe. Just for grins, since it’s this froup, I clicked on da link. Took almost 4 minutes for anything to happen.  It changed the window’s title to "Goto Auctions – Auctions Made Simple".  Then it sat there for another three minutes. Normally, I would abandon the page after the first minute. Ok. Now the page has displayed…  It’s too wide to fit in the window, but the horizontal scroll bars are disabled. oops.  Resizing the window was a Bad Idea.  I ended up with a blank window for 2 minutes while NetScape refetched things (gotta love them .asp’s!).  And even with the window the full width of my screen, it *still* isn’t displaying everything. "Step 1" and "Step 2" are dimmed.  So I clicked on "Step 3".  That took me to a page-not-found error, then bounced me back to the sloe page. Are we having fun yet? FWIW, – Dan. — – South Jersey, USA, Earth  <http://hamsterdance.com/ – My mind not only wanders, sometimes it leaves completely.

Response:

Okay here are my explanations! I don’t put my address in at first because I was getting a lot of deadbeat bidders (something about clothing attracting jerks) so I don’t give it to them till I get theirs.  In fact I got that idea off of this newsgroup. Secondly the page wasn’t loading because AuctionRover was doing site maintenance this morning, normally it loads just fine, but I can’t help when they do their maintenance.  As for the graphics on there I can’t do much about that either, auctionrover takes care of all of that. I can understand about the MLM thing, I get so much crap in my mailbox daily (all to my yahoo address too…) and most of it I don’t read.  However when they get the email it says something to the effect of "Congratulations you won Ebay Auction #3098475823 — Really Cute Shirt" in the subject line so they know it’s for the auction.  Also the email does not go to them anonymously it comes from my primary account.  I have changed to an anonymous one on here because of all the assholes who have been here lately. If anyone has any suggestions how I can make it more clear that this is for my auction and that they will receive all the pertinent information upon sending me their address I would appreciate it.
