NARU

Question:

<snip Not that it matters – Kris – but the shades *do* show on the main auction page and the bid history as well. I know my record is not good, but unless I’m  going completly daft or getting a 30 year delayed hit from my last spliff, ’shades’ are what I see. Try and tell me what you see: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=915563534&rd=1 <snip

Yes, you can see them on the bid page.   I was talking about     the seller’s page (list).   Sorry if I wasn’t clear. I see shades, if you check the ID history he’s changed ID’s several times, most recently back on October 6, which explains the shades. Never really understood the reason behind changing an ID a lot, but he’s definitely not the only person to do so, and his feedback wouldn’t indicate any nefarious reason behind it.

I think some folks don’t understand the system. Kris

Personally, I know someone who * created an eBay account using his email address as his id * moved to a new city, got a new ISP, and changed his id to   his new email address * had his ISP borged by Mindspring, and changed his id to   his new email address * started a small business, and changed his id to his   business’ name Honest!  It’s a true story even if it isn’t interesting!

Hi Me again – this time with tail between legs and head down. The bidder is not ‘Naru’ed’. Stupidly, I checked out the bidders name as given on the auction page. Seemingly, a blank space in the ID is not a blank space for checking-up purposes. It’s a lower case dash. But the nice thing was all you people bombing in to help. Thanks and sorry for the false alarm. Bolly

All you had to do was click on their feedback ;) Thanks for solving the mystery.   Looks like Howard was right on this one. Kris

Response:

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi I’ve got a high bidder with good feedback but shades next to his ID. So I look him/her up and discover that ‘it’ is not a registerd user. What should I do – if anything? High bidder on an open auction?  Then the bid should disappear shortly. NARUs can’t have bids. The shades aren’t relevant–they just mean a username change. Deborah Stevenson What’s odd here is this:   shades *do not* show on the bid page, only on the feedback page.   Since NARU also appears on the feedback page, why would have he to "look him up" to see that?

All I can think of is the NARU happened right when he clicked on the feedback number…..but that’d be like being hit by a lightning strike. Kris

Wow – they must have been NARU’d right after they placed that bid. What should I do – if anything? Thanks people.

Cancel the bid; you don’t want to deal with them. Kris

Aren’t existing bids nuked when one is NARU’d? Apparantly not? Current NARU’d sellers’ auctions are nuked, you’d think would be the same for NARU’d bidders? Mac

Response:

I thought we’d established that they are, but not in one fell swoop along with the NARU.  But I think Kris has a point–it sure won’t hurt to cancel the bid, and you never know when your auction is going to end in the time between eBay’s official NARU and their administrative cancellation. Response:

not sure if it is applicable……. I had a few "sages" look up my PARTIAL ID (weaver) and found someone else who also had an ID that was partially mine (also had a few of the correct letters, but NOT ALL), but CERTAINLY NOT ME. We did go through this thread a while ago! If that person was NARU, but not the person who actually bid on your auction, see if there is a REAL EMAIL ADDRESS you can email to and see if they are not the NARU. look up ID of weaver…..the ID is NOT MINE, as I have more letters/numbers in my address/ID and have been a member longer and EVEN HAVE SOME AUCTIONS currently up and running (over 300 so far this year) Just a thought to see if the auction bidder is "legit" H —

What does Not a Register User mean? Temporary Suspension? Account termination by eBay? I have a closed auction, and the winning bidder’s status changed into NARU, I did receive payment from him, I don’t think there should be any problem, but anyone care to comment? Veronica

It means suspension, beyond that you can’t really tell.  Temporary suspension and indefinite suspension both show up the same way.  If he paid, and the payment is in a form you trust, then ship the merchandise and don’t worry.  It could be a suspension for failure to pay eBay fees as a seller, it could be for having a problem with his contact information, but if you’ve been paid, no real reason why you should care.  I’ve had a few buyers who paid after being NARUed, only difference it made was I couldn’t leave them feedback. Sorry to be a pain, but what does it stand for? Seen it a couple of time here, got an idea that it’s some sort of ebay restriction on a seller. But still can’t work out the full meaning. thanks wayne

NARU = Not A Registered User, and it can apply to both buyers and sellers.  It seems easier for a buyer to become NARU (for nonpayment) than for a seller to lose the account.   It can be a temporary or permanent status, voluntary or not (usually not), and can be based on infractions (or nonpayment of fees). http://pages.ebay.com/help/myinfo/user-not-registered.html Kris

Response:

Aye no apology or real reason. What I have just noticed though is that my suspension lasted for exactly 24 hours – to the minute……

Maybe this is how they’re dealing with all those outages they’ve been having.  They randomly NARU a percentage of the user base for 24 hours to reduce the load on their system. -Bertha — Lawyer: an individual whose job it is to protect his clients from other members of the profession.
