Question:
Has anyone been to North Caicos? Just wondering how were the beaches and were there interesting sites. Thanks.
Response:
Just about a deserted island. Sounds like a different kind of fun. Supposed to have some big caves and nice beaches on the north shore, but just no one around! Good luck, I’ll be in Provo August for the opening of LOBSTER season! CB
Response:
Thanks. We will be there in August, too. Maybe run into you you at PLS.

I’ll be basking in the sun on Grace bay staying at the seemingly desserted Treasure Beach Villas 7/30 thru 8/16. Chip

Maybe I will see you as I arrive the 16th.

Middle Caicos is our favorite island and we just got back from another 2 weeks of working on our house there (a years long construction project – a whole other story). Middle is the island known for caves although North may have some as well. Beaches are on the north coast of both Middle and North. The ones on Middle are usually completely deserted. We’ve often taken the ferry from Middle to North on Saturdays to do some grocery resupplying. On North, visit Three Mary’s Cays, Wade’s Green Plantation, see the flamingo pond (not a close approach, but you might see thousands). Mike Ramsey

What was the problem, we are interested in building there, Mike? — "I’ll do the stupid thing first and then you shy people follow…" -Zappa

No one problem, it’s just that everything is a challenge. Consider that the population is only about 260, the only locally available resource is sand, everything else has to be shipped in from Provo… We broke ground 3 years ago and began the cistern 2 years ago. Last week, we spend our first 4 nights in a ground floor apartment. It was a little like camping but I’m very pleased with the work I’ve been able to do during about 3 months on the island (spread over those last 2 years). I have some photos of the construction on my website (http://caicosdream.com) but need to update with the last year or so of work. Mike

I have several questions if you don’t mind. What are the cost of materials relative to the US, what has to be flown in special from the US, why is the cistern so large (or is it) and was it the cost of land that kept you from beachfront? — "I’ll do the stupid thing first and then you shy people follow…" -Zappa

Rule of thumb is that everything costs about 1.5 to 2x US costs. Shipping and duty are most of the difference. Most things are available on Provo but selection may be limited. I’ve shipped quite a few things myself because I can shop around and not have to spend time looking on Provo. I usually carry suitcases full of plumbing or electrical parts – I’ve even carried a ceiling fan and an instant water heater in my luggage. Last summer, I bought a scooter on Ebay, built a crate for it and added lots of things I needed – a ladder, garden cart, water pump, breaker box, etc. Building code requires 10 gallons of cistern per sq ft of roof area. 20000 gallons is larger than required for my house but you can’t really have too much water storage. This last year there wasn’t much rain for 8 months. Yeah, I don’t have a beachfront budget. Mike

Thanks so much, wow, what an education, I’m in Atlanta so getting there is not much of a hassle. Can you tell me about the land costs, that is beachfront vs beach view? Thanks for your time, your website was fun, I especially liked the part about not seeing the snakes. — "Jazz is not dead…it just smells funny." -Zappa

Until recently beachfront at Bambarra was about $90K per acre. Eastwinds at the east end of Middle sold out for up to $300k for 2 acre lots. Provo realtors have been trying to drive up Middle prices in order to make it worth doing business. I don’t think land is worth what they think it is yet (they’re talking 300-400k per acre). Beachview is $15k to $25k for half acre lots, depending on location. Mike

Egads, $90K I can see, perhaps $125K for primo but over that, no way, Mike, you got a bargain and although we would love to walk out the backdoor to the beach, it ain’t worth $125K+ more *and* 2x building costs. DSL, but I’m in Texas. Someday we’ll be living on Middle… and will probably have to have a satellite. Mike

Yep, Months of planning then a couple of weeks of intense work. It helps that I have 5 weeks vacation each year. Mike

Been there several times, always just as a day trip on the ferry from neighboring Middle Caicos. Haven’t been to it’s beach much so can’t say for sure. In fact the beach would only be on the north coast and, yes that’s where the hotels and villas are. Most of the population lives along Bottle Creek on the east shore. No beach there but it is a scenic place overlooking the shallows and bay islands East Bay Cay has wild iguanas (not the kind that come to you to be fed). Three Marys Cays on the northwest corner is also very scenic and supposed to be great snorkelling. But don’t climb on the cays, they are a protected osprey nesting site. We vacation on Middle Caicos. It’s remote and undeveloped. If you want to just relax on the beach with an occasional hike along the cliffs or a nature walk, it’s ideal. If you need casinos or nightlife to keep you entertained, forget it. Population is less that 300 so North seems rather crowded to us with it’s over 1000 people! Even on our 6th visit last time, I saw things I never imagined were there, like a "bottomless" pond surrounded by palm trees or a miniature rainforest under 200 year old mango trees. Our trips to North often include a mid-vacation replenishment at the grocery store. Middle has a few stores but the ones on North have ice cream! Best ice cream you may ever have is the little pint tubs that you have to spend a whole day to get, even if it’s a just vanilla and a little freezer burned. I have my own website about our trips to Middle (needing updates from our last few) and established a webring which links 10 sites for the island. Check it out at http://caicosdream.com Mike Ramsey
