Question:
Check out http://www.aerialpursuits.com/products/prd_strt.htm Local company in Vic. Cheers, DavidH – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi folks, I’m looking to buy a new headset. As a student pilot I’m told to steer clear of the ANR variety (for now). Prices in the US for David Clark (and others) seem very good compared with local prices. I’m all for supporting local business but that approach dies if I can buy for a fraction of the price elsewhere (bought a few pro Nikon lenses recently from the US for about 40% of the local price!!). Warranty doesn’t really bother me and I know there could be a GST payment. However, has anyone done this and can you recommend a US supplier of note – specifically for headsets (David Clark or Bose etc.)? Any suggestions (and/or criticisms) gratefully taken on board. Regards, David E (Sydney)

Maaaate, Any company with a Web site that has pages still under construction with "specials" listed for June 2003 is hardly worth dealing with. If they don’t take themselves seriously, why should I? I use an ANR headset. It filters out predominantly the low frequency end (where most of the loud engine noise is) and I find it makes the "mechanical" noises of the engine easier to hear- sounds such as blown exhaust manifold gaskets, which happen occasionally on Gypsies, and tappet noise, are clearer in my opinion. It also reduces fatigue on longer flights, and allows radio calls to be heard more easily. I wouldn’t go back to passive only. Coop

I’m all for supporting local business but that approach dies if I can buy for a fraction of the price elsewhere. That’s why things can cost more here. Because people don’t support local business. Just for info, I did some sums on prices here vs USA. If buying from the USA, by time you add on shipping costs, the exchange rate, and customs charges here in Aus, the costs were close enough to even. ;)
Local suppliers don’t do their homework and get fat on the profits. In the US there are suppliers that gouge people as well, so you have to shop around. In Oz there is no competition, normal rule of thumb, take the US dollar price and double it to get the Oz price, even with an exchange rate of .78. Headsets and the like are a perfect opportunity to buy from the US.

Bad advice. Protect your hearing while you still have it. I can assure you that a Good ANR/ENC headset makes an enormous difference (I have a Telex ANR-1D)… The Bose is somewhat overpriced. The advantage that the top end Telex and Bose headsets have is predictive cancellation. They are much more effective at cancelling fixed background noise (such as prop noise) than the basic ANR (many are capable of achieving 25-30db cancellation of prop noise), however even a 12-18db cancellation on top of a passive blockage makes a huge difference. Consider used ones on eBay! My ANR-1D was bought as a demo from AvionicsWest, but they don’t sell them any longer. The two people I fly with, I bought used Telex ANR headsets on eBay. They weren’t top of the line Telex, but they were still a huge improvement over the David Clark Passive headsets, and when I bought them a couple years ago, 200USD each was a great price. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -Any suggestions (and/or criticisms) gratefully taken on board. Hi J Mac, Thanks for your comments. Naturally I’ll do my own sums too. However, in one example I was recently able to purchase (as per my earlier post) a lens from big New York dealer for a total of AUD2200 including shipping, customs etc. The cheapest I could purchase the same item here was about AUD4200. What would you do? (The only difference is in the warranty. I’d have to return it to the US for that – I’ve never had a lens failure in many years of photography.) If there’s only a 10% or 20% price difference, sure, I’ll buy local. But when you see almost prices 50% lower for siginificant items, buy elsewhere and inform the local guys. If I can buy something for that online, surely their supply chain needs revising. I support Australian business fully (and own 2 of them myself) but in many cases we are not treated seriously as consumers on a global scale and this kind of purchasing disparity may eventually lead to some kind of shakeout or at least a move toward a more favourable balance (hopefully!). Cheers, Dave (donning flame suit…)

Regards, David E (Sydney) Try marvgolden.com I bought a David Clark 20-10 headset on the advice of my instructor and I have been happy with it. I looked on Ebay and found the prices for anything decent to be as high or higher than new price. Beaware also that military headsets use a single plug system, as do helicopters I believe. My instructor advised me against purchasing ANR headset. Apparently ANR headsets filter out irritating and distracting noise, which is interesting given that for me sometimes the most irritating and distracting noise is the instructor’s voice coming through the headset speakers. I hope he does not read this newsgroup, but I am in the US so I should be right I think. MarvGolden.com is THE best by far. Fair, efficient. Just a happy customer…

The reason I’ve been given (and have read about in numerous related magazine articles) is predominantly related to the notion of the young pilot getting to know the revs/sounds of the aeroplane. I ride motorbikes and can see the sense in this from my 2 wheeled experiences. They say that ANR takes away one of the key inputs, or at least makes it much harder to grasp in the early stages. In my short time of flying this does make sense, though I believe ANR can be switched off. However, I’m told that I a good approach is to purchase a non-ANR headset while you obtain your PPL and then pass it on to the SO (or the insignificant other) when you are ready to take passengers, replacing it with a juicy Bose ANR or whatever you can afford. Forgetting to activate ANR in the first 12 months is not a bad thing, so I’m told.
That makes sense I did get reminded to pick the RPM by sound and I can now mostly get close to the desired rpm with fewer adjustments (& glances at the tach) than used to be the case. P.S. Who are you flying with? I’m (very happily) learning with Basair.

Hmmm… I usually am credited with having a reasonable (if not at times, warped) sense of humour. On the above I’m feeling a little, shall we say… flummoxed. Perhaps you are doing an impression of someone at altitude with limited hearing on descent?? In which case… aaaah, I’m wid you bro. But yes the world marketplace hasjust got larger and ebay is a good place to check for bot Australia and worldwide <http://search.ebay.com.au/David-Clark-Headset_W0QQsoloctogZ9
Yes, I’ve had a look at ebay but as per original post, I’m really only considering new items at this point. Call me a sentimental fool, but I’m not chomping at the bit to have someone else’s ear/hair bits and thingys to take residence in my cranial nooks and crannies. :) Something of an overstatement but I’d just prefer a new item. Still keen to hear of experiences. Cheers, Dave E (Sydney)
