OT—-Quicken

Question:

I have to say that I have found quicken a good product and easy to use. It can be a bit of a pain to set up the initial accounts and categories. But that is true with any system. I find it does a good job of keeping track of the type, or category, of my spending. This was my main problem for years. I knew how much money I had as income and what my fixed outlays were. When I subtracted the later from the former there was a lot missing and I wonder just, "where in the hell all the money went". I used several methods to discover this before the PC ever entered the picture. But a package such as quicken makes it a lot easier. As for cost, I have seen it as cheat as 29.95 and as much as 50.00. Good Luck, fireman alyson <euch…@interlynx.net> wrote in message

We use Quicken at home, and it’s nice, but where we run into problems is that my hubby always forgets to enter in his expenses.  Two things help me with that:  1)  having a box or an envelope where you can place receipts, and one of you can enter it on a weekly basis or something; 2) Getting a bank account that you can check on-line so you can catch something he might have missed, like cash withdrawls. I like using the Savings goals function where you can "transfer" money to a phantom account set up to track savings goals. We’ve used it for years, but my wife stopped using it when I upgraded to Version 7. She said it became too complicated to enter things. Look around, especially on the web. Check used software stores or eBay for old versions, maybe DataWarehouse (ummm.. warehouse.com?) for a new one. A new copy may be something like $40 to $50, perhaps less on sale. I REALLY loved it at tax time, because it made the summarizing so easy, and could even make a file that a tax program could read directly to fill in the forms. I’m using QuickBooks now because I have a small business. I’d say that’s way too complicated for home use.       – Randy

Quicken is an excellent personal finance application and from somebody who’s used it extenseively, i highly recommend it.  it is the best thing of its kind on the market.  if you reconcile your checkbook, it will pay for itself in one month in all the time you save.  you can also use it to pay bills online.  you can even have it automatically make your mortgage, car, or other payments each month automatically.  if you have a printer you can also have it print your checks.  it can do all sorts of things but you only have to use it for the things you want to use it for.  can’t say enough good things about Quicken. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text -alyson wrote: > Hi, > Is Quicken something I can use for the family bookkeeping? Quicken goes on sale from time to time… watch the ads from Best Buy, Comp USA, Circuit City, Office Depot/Max/Staples, etc … I’ve evaluated it but decided it was not for me … I can do stuff with Excel spreadsheets that keeps records the way I like them but that is just one of my many quirky personal preferences. You might also want to post this in misc.consumers.frugal-living …. the folks over there really take budgeting seriously; many of them can account for the first penny they ever earned :-) Floridanewbie

Hey alyson. You can use Quicken, Microsoft Money, Microsoft Works, Microsoft Excel -any number of programs. They all have functions that can make spread sheets or let you customize documents to fit your needs. I use Microsoft Works. SheLion alyson <euch…@interlynx.net> wrote in message
