Paypal tried to cheat me

Question:

I have done nothing wrong, just been accepting PayPal from friends, not even eBay items.  Pisses me off.  I wont ever use them again and I suggest you do the same.  They are not an honesty company.

And why have they been paypalling you?  have you been paypaling them back? that’s where you cross the line about-using it in a manner that would be equal to cash advances.. have perhaps, you paypaled someone 100$ to a friend, (off cc) and he sent the same amount to you, and you took it into your bank account? that’s a major freaking no-no

Response:

Unbelievable.  That is theft plain and simple.  Are you saying they wouldn’t let you withdraw the money that’s been sent to you or did they bill you that amount?  I know there is a website that lets you type in a domain name and it will tell you who it is registered to but I forget the URL.

You can get the information through register.com or networksolutions.com. Lee

I know that these are a lot more involved, but $822 is a ton of money to me! Joe. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – PayPal disgusts me.  They have stolen $822 from me! They froze my account about 4 weeks ago, did not say way, just that I I have sent at least 8 emails and have not received a reply from them. I emailed customer service and they have replied 3 times telling me they are looking into. 4 weeks and I still dont have my $822. I read threads about having problems with Paypal here all the time, and I can verify that with my own experience.  My story is complicated, but here goes: A.  I opened my first account to pay for a guitar.  I added my credit card (then the limit was $500).  Guitar cost $378 and that was billed to my credit card.  Fine.  I closed the account soon afterwards. B.  I sold some speakers on ebay.  Even though I said on the auction page I only accept money orders/cashier’s checks and personal checks, he kept asking me if I took paypal.  I gave in (mistake) and signed up again.  The amount put in my account was around $20.00.  I had a check for the amount mailed to me and I closed the account. C.  I opened an account the third time (which must have been in a fit of delusion).  I added my same credit card since I only have the one and tried to send payment.  It wouldn’t let me do it and kept on saying "You have reached your limit.  You need to add another credit card or bank account…" I tried several times and kept getting the same message.  The amount I was trying to send was just over $20.00 this time.  I made another huge mistake and added a bank account.  I got paranoid and removed it soon after which was long before I had it verified with them(but they still have the account number which worries me). D.  I sent paypal an email stating my problems.  They took forever in replying but I finally got an answer.  The guy said I needed to add another card or bank account because I had spent over my limit.  He said I had that same card registered to three different paypal accounts (true- all but one were closed) and that I had made two charges (wrong!).  He said I had charged the $378 for the guitar, but he also said I had charged over $700 another time!!!  I wrote him right back and told him this was a mistake. Paypal doesn’t even allow someone to spend that much just on a credit card. My credit card limit is only $600.  He replied saying that I had charged those two amounts on seperate occasions but didn’t give any details. I wrote him back a second time saying this HAD to be a mistake and to change it immediately.  I got a reply back in a couple of days that said "okay, problem fixed.  You should be able to send money on your account now." …Well I tried sending money and it did the same exact thing it had before. E.  Later on I tried to order tickets for the symphony online (not related to paypal or ebay in anyway) and it wouldn’t take my credit card after numerous tries.  I just sent my latest credit card payment in (I always pay the full balance to avoid any interest rates) and I still have over $100 of credit line left according to the bill.  I haven’t charged anything else- everything I had charged recently was on my latest bill.  I’m going to call my credit card company and see what’s going on.  Paypal better not have tried to charge me for something I didn’t do!  I removed my credit card from my account and tried to close it.  No such luck- it said you have to have a credit card added to your account in order to close it!!!  I am through with that scam of a company. Thanks for letting me rant, Joe.

Before you buy.

Response:

Thanks.  I guess I just made the foolish mistake of trusting paypal because it seemed like just about everyone was using it and it had received good reviews by financial magazines and such.  My choice of disparaging paypal is simply in my spelling.  It’s not PayPal or Pay Pal… just paypal, one word with no capitalization.  Maybe the word will become somewhat synonymous with "fraud" or "scam" in at least a slang context.  In thirty years people will use in in conversation: "Wow, that guy was really trying to paypal me when he tried to pawn off that watch." Joe. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi, Joe.  You sound like a nice guy, and I hope this all works out.  Keep us posted, okay?  By the way, I just wanted to express my appreciation that you gave the details of your story, plus didn’t rant and rave and throw in a bunch of expletives.  We’ve seen lots of posts about PayPal where either the people don’t tell the story (thus they don’t have any credibility), or else they’re written so childishly in ALL CAPS! with an EXCLAMATION POINT! after every sentence, and full of 4-letter words.  Yours is a complaint I can take seriously.

Response:

I have a sneaking suspicion that they went ahead and charged my credit card that $700+ even though they said they hadn’t.  I really shouldn’t talk about such things though or else I’ll get too angry.  I’m calling my credit card company tomorrow and no matter what I’ll get to the bottom of it.  I wonder if anyone has an anti-paypal website… Joe. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Joe,     Take Peter’s word for it.  He purchased a laptop from me and paid by PayPal.  For some reason I received payment twice.  It may have been caused by a double mouse click or a crappy server.  It doesn’t matter who’s fault it was, PayPal should have cheerfully refunded Pete’s 1.9% credit card surcharge on the overpayment.  They didn’t.  I fought to get the one charge removed from my account ($14.00) and was reassured that Pete wouldn’t be charged, he was.  This, to me, is inexcusable and in poor taste.  And what is really frightening is that Pete’s credit card was billed $700.00 twice. if I were dishonest I would have had a $700.00 bonus.  Paypal needs to put a safety net in place to prevent buyers from sending payment to the same person for at least 5-minutes between transactions. BTWSince I’m in a real pissy mood since I’m fighting this "Cannot find server" shit while trying to list items tonight.  Now I’m pissed off. Screw ebay too.  Sorry to sound foul, Joe.  I’m just tired of piss poor service and people trying to get deeper in my pockets while providing less service. Spot

Very Important Lesson here, Never trust someone you don’t know who wants to help you for free. When paypal first started up I was suspicious, Everything I have heard over the last 6 months about paypal has been bad. All they had to do in the begining was throw $5 dollar bills around and people signed up in droves. Let me ask everyone here; If someone walked up to you in a shopping mall and said they would give you five bucks for your cc# , Would you give it to them? Of course not! Maybe that’s a bad example, but how about your bank? Has your bank ever asked for your cc# to verify anything?, (I don’t mean loan applications). have you ever gone in to your bank to take money out and they asked you for a cc#? Have you ever tried to use your visa card somewhere and they ask you for your savings acct.#? I saw this comming, it started out so easy and they gave you money to boot, then every month they add a new restriction. My advice to everyone is to drop paypal. Of course when this starts to happen they will throw a few dollars around and say paypal has changed and people will line up like sheep to sign back up. Drew

Good God, do you know how awful this could have been if I didn’t have someone good on the other side of the transaction! Well, in all fairness I knew you were honest before I even put in a bid on that notebook.  but I don’t think PayPal would have done much if you had taken the $ and run. Anyway, suffice to say that this is just half of the story.  Someday, if I’m *really* pissed off at PayPal, I’ll post copies of the e-mails they sent me while I was trying to get this straightened out… ;-) Peter "Spotillius Maximus aka "Spot"" wrote – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Joe,     Take Peter’s word for it.
