Question:

Gas masks are very easy to use….and do offer substantial safety wrt future nuclear wars (quite likely to happen, think of Pakistan)…    i c h u d o v     A T     a l g e b r a     D O T     c o m

Wow, I’ll get one. Then when they nuke nearby Oak Ridge, I’ll be perfectly safe. A great comfort, thanks. —         Mac (doogle)

Seems to me that putting themselves up in a hotel for 2 weeks would cost just as much. So this appears to be a cheap bargain for the bidder. Stupid purchase but a bargain ;-)

If you think gas mask auctions are silly, check this: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1650091535

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Look at the listings on gas masks. Is it just me or 48 pages of listings sound silly? What’s going on? Are these sellers simply responding to public demand or are they seizing this business opportunity by preying on people’s fears? Bluntly, they are preying on the fears of stupid people. Unless you wear the mask all the time, how can it protect you?   I guess if they keep one in the back of the closet, they feel protected? Kris The people who buy the gas masks apparently figure that all they need is the mask, and that is it.  If terrorists find a few tanks of old WWI style mustard gas, then these people will be safe.  Anything of more recent vintage won’t be stopped by gas masks. Oh well.  I admit that I sold a gas mask myself.  Mind you, it was a late WW2 German volksgasmask– sold by the Nazi government with the same sort of fear mongering that the ebay sellers are using.  I sold it as a collectible. I am not sure if it would have worked, even when it was new.

Anyone with military experience knows that proper and effective use of a "gas mask" requires practice, and is chancy in the best of conditions with the mask in a handy ergonomic carrier worn right on the hip. It really is difficult to imagine something useful to one’s survival when contemplating the technology and deviance at work in the world. "Put your head between your knees . . . " — "…my experience is that a poster either has something interesting or amusing to say, or has something to say that can be ridiculed, mocked, jeered at or wilfully misinterpreted."
