Question:
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Wanted to pick this video up for the rental store I run. Had my eyes open for it for quite a while and was happy when it showed up around the right price on ebay(what price is that? cheap of course!) Put in a bid and capped it around $45 just in case. Bid ran about $8. I go home and check later and bam, it is $43+ dollars. Of course thanks to my favorite pal old "zero feed back mcgee." http://cgi6.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewBids&item=1540715719 For better or worse I cancelled my bid as it just made me feel wrong. Did I jump the gun maybe? Probably. Of course, this shows the supreme advantage of sniping. Had you put in a robo-snipe for $45 instead of your proxy $45, you probably would have won it for about $9, since loser-newbie was only entering bids one increment above the max.
Hi! Does this NG have a FAQ so a newbie like me can get to figure out shills and robo-snipes. Thanks.

Hi! Does this NG have a FAQ so a newbie like me can get to figure out shills and robo-snipes. Thanks.
FAQ here: http://www.banneditems.com/amoefaq.html Quick answers: Shill — an operative working for the seller (or perhaps the seller themself) who bids on an item in an attempt to raise the final price. This is prohibited by eBay rules. Snipe — A bid in the final seconds of an auction. The purpose of doing so is to prevent anyone from outbidding you because time will have run out. Note that sniping does not guarantee a win — you still need to be the highest bidder. "Robo-snipe" — Using a program to snipe, rather than doing it manually. A couple good ones are PhantomBidder (http://www.phantombidder.com) and HammerSnipe (http://www.hammertap.com/HammerSnipe.html). -Bob

You have to be born with something called "common sense" to figure out these things. Obviously you’re lacking it.
Would not this and the post defaming myself as a "dipshit" not also fall under your definition of "get ready to be sued?" Why would someone who would try to put down or flame another via a "get ready to be sued" type of post, post such things? Does it not go against your sensibilities? The "post what you think and you will get sued for it" sensibilities? – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Wanted to pick this video up for the rental store I run. Ok for how much? If it is bid creeping or an irregular bid pattern? Just like to prepare my case. I now know what I did was pretty "jump the gun"-ish but the tape is hardly worth $50. Yip. As a buyer, I hate using the proxy bid. It just seems stupid of me to enter a bid early when I know it will probably get sniped anyway. That’s why I love to snipe. There’s nothing like a good snipe to get the blood rushing (no, I don’t robo-snipe, I do it the old-fashioned way

<snip It does look like bid-creeping to me, but on the other hand, why would a power seller with a rating of more than 58,000 resort to this? or even have the time for this? But then on the other hand 32 negs in the past month and 170 negs in the past 6 months may be telling you something also.
32 negs in the past month in this case is less than 1/3rd of 1%. 170 negs in the past six months is 1/4th of 1%. 2515 Current auctions being run by papier11. There is no shill here.

Why is this back down to $8.61? If jaycrib was not using proxy how did it get back down? — Allison AIM ~ duffbeer ICQ ~ 92606254

Did I jump the gun maybe? Possibly: a) There is no way the seler could know what your top proxy bid was to deliberately bid to just $2 dollars below it deliberately b) The other bidder is also bidding on a few other items, none of which are sold by this seller. A couple of which are related which could indicate they are a collector. As you had your eye on this video, how can you be so sure no-one else was looking for it also? c) Judging by the amount of business the seller does, I doubt they would risk their Ebay account (and business) for a $45 item. I would be careful though about making unfounded allegations in your bid retraction reason like you have done. It could be classed as libel. — Best Regards Niel Humphreys Snowdon Computers

Allison wrote Why is this back down to $8.61? If jaycrib was not using proxy how did it get back down?
The current price is set by the second highest bidder. When jaycrib was the second highest bidder (with a $42 bid) and griffinmills was the high bidder (with a $45 bid), the current price was $43 (one increment more than the second highest bid). Now jaycrib is the highest bidder (still with a $42 bid) and millenniumman831 is the second highest (with a $8.11 bid) so the current price is $8.61, one increment more than the second highest bid. jaycrib was not "using proxy" properly, in that it would have made more sense to bid $42 in the first place, but any bid on eBay is treated as a proxy bid if it’s more than one increment higher than the second highest bid.

Yep. In my experience, most people bid this way (like jaycrib did) when they are new to eBay. I see nothing that suggests anything unusual here.

He’s 99.7% positive in the past month, which is pretty damned good. For the past six months, he’s 99.3% (and I included the neutrals on that one). The bidding looks like newbie-ville to me, not a shill. I’d hate to be accused of using shills, when a newbie comes along and bids like that. If the seller notices, the OP may get a very angry email (deservedly, imho). Kris
