Question:
Be advised, i have been selling on ebay for 3 years with two id’s, the following should be noted with regard to paypal.
OK already – it’s becoming SPAM

The description says the item is 7 feet long. Perhaps with UPS ground it’s "oversized" so it doesn’t matter what it weighs but does matter how big it is. Maybe with 3 day it doesn’t matter what size it is because they have plenty of space for it. Stranger things have happened.

Because he may have made an honest mistake? S/H on his other auctions looks reasonable. Excellent feedback score. Have you asked the seller for explanation?

Shipping AND HANDLING is very reasonable, a virtual bargain in fact. But if you do not like it then please do not bid. Give me your eBay ID also so that I may block you from bidding on my fishing equipment as well.

Ask UPS. My guess is with 3 day, the item is off the truck in 3 days. With ground, it may have to be handled by 10 people over a period of a week. How does this guy scam UPS shipping costs like this? I used my ZIP code of 92024. Is there a way to report scammers like this?
I think we need to work on reporting the clueless who have no idea how UPS works. — To reply, remove TheObvious from my e-mail address.

At eight feet by 6 inches square, the combined length and girth is 24+96 which does not quite trip the 130 inch + oversize charge. But if you further package the item, it definitely will trip the steep surcharges. The quotes are probably accurate. — Many thanks, Don Lancaster Synergetics 3860 West First Street Box 809 Thatcher, AZ 85552 Please visit my GURU’s LAIR web site at http://www.tinaja.com

This isn’t a UPS problem since the rate calculator that eBay supplies lets the seller hide the *handling* charge from the buyer. So, he is probably charging an additional $5.00 for that cardboard mailing tube he pulled out of the carpet supplier’s warehouse dumpster. This, plus the limitations the eBay supplied calculator has make it a worthless tool compared to your own html calculator. Also, if you are in the same UPS shipping zone it it utterly foolish to request and pay for anything but ground shipping since your package always comes the next business day. The eBay shipping calculator is a marvelous tool for S&H gougers since it allow them to keep everything hidden including weight and dimensions, pickup services, and S&H. My shipping calculator takes you to the UPS sit and displays all information about the package and options selected, no cheating room. Rita

Even if the quoted price for 3 day is cheaper?

Be advised, i have been selling on ebay for 3 years with two id’s, the following should be noted with regard to paypal. Paypal is now registered inthe UK and is subsequently liable to comply with UK law. They are currently undergoing a policy change, they are trying to con all buyers to fund their purchases from their bank accounts or paypal balance, the reason, if you fund a paypal purchase from your credit card, and the sale falls through you can ask your card company to negate the transaction and refund the amount, they will generally do this if you stick to the card companies guide lines, the result is that paypal have to recover the amount from the dodgy seller. Paypal (ebay) do not like this, they want you to take all the risks and they take all the charges. Paypal protection, is a joke, you can only make two claims a year, irrespective of value, example you make two purchases, which do not materialise using paypal one for 20.00 and one for 15.00. you claim for loss of funds,, paypal may or may not refund you, but thats your lot for 1 year from the date of the second claim. The claim is currently limited to 250.00 per claim two claims maximum in 1 year. However, say you buy a digital camera for 200.00, and the seller sends you a 5.00 disposable camera, you are not covered because you received some goods, i know this sounds silly but its true. Paypal are currently contacting paypal users requesting additional security requirements, claiming its to comply with European anti money laundering regulations, they ask you to set up a direct debit in their favour, so they can send some pennies to your bank account, you must then verify that you received it purportedly to satisfy them that your bank account is yours, It is however a con, on the page after you submit the direct debit, it says that from now on your bank account will be the default source of funding for all your ebay purchases, thereby negating your opportunity to make a claim off your card company, if a woman in canada sends you a plastic 5.00 camera instead of the 200.00 digital one you bid on and paid for, through paypal, paypal will not acccept a claim because you received some goods, hey they could send you a dog turd, i kid you not if you receive goods you do not have a claim.. I take this action by paypal (ebay its the same company) as a personal insult to the intelligence of ebay buyers. It is a complete con, just like when you report a seller for sellig counterfeit goods, and ebay takes so long too look at your complaint that all the sales are completed before any action is taken, they regularly cancel a few token sales to make it look like they are acting to protect buyers, they are not, every month thousands of counterfeit items, ilegal copies of software, thousnds of dodgy money making scams, etc etc go full term, so ebay and paypal can have their fees.

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Did you use UPS or USPS under it? I ship exclusively UPS and didn’t find it accurate for my needs. Plus, the option of adding an additional handling fee that is hidden from the buyer makes it a real turn-off for me. I believe in full disclosure when it comes to shipping & handling. USPS… I try very hard not to use UPS for anything, unless it absolutely saves the customer money and he really really wants it that way. Had too many bad experiences with UPS delivering packages to the wrong address (or not at all) and yet still claiming via their own tracking that the item was delivered! Unfortunately, my weekly new-stuff shipments come via UPS because the wholesaler (I have no real other choice in the matter because there is only one wholesaler for this market) only ships via UPS… and for several months a couple of years back UPS was losing my packages almost every week just within the local hub! It was nuts. I’m not for the hidden extra fees either… When I make my general shipping prices I try to cover on average cost of supplies and the miscellaneous times when I don’t end up charging enough, and average it over everyone. For big items, packages that require unique packaging, and all international sales it just makes more sense to price specific to that shipment. Requires a little extra work, but I make sure I’m not screwing myself or the customer. That’s great. I have more respect for merchants that give all the facts to the buyer to make an informative purchase. I do still get a lot of questions about "how much does this item cost to ship"… even when I put the weight in the auction for them to price themselves… I *think* this is due to so much of the gouging, that some buyers have become accustomed to not trusting what they see… so I try to reassure them that while I am providing an initial "guess" on shipping… I’m not going to go nuts adding extra hidden charges. The only reason the shipping quote isn’t exact right now, is because I don’t know what they will win, and how much I can combine in one box yet… until after the auctions end and I can give them the best deal. I don’t do international because UPS brokerage fees are a rip-off. But, overall, the UPS calculator I incorporate in my auctions is very accurate and easy to use. Plus, the major advantage is it’s independent from eBay. I have a customer in Puerto Rico… and Priority Mail is his choice every month because Media Mail is horribly slow off the mainland from the US… but it is kind of pricey. Turns out UPS is at least twice as much, because they obviously don’t offer "ground" surface across water
But also, I have to fill out customs information to ship to Puerto Rico via UPS… whereas with USPS, there’s nothing to do extra just like it were within the US. USPS customs seems to be alright for the most part, another form for me to fill out of course where required… but I’m slowly learning too that under certain weights or dimensions, and below certain values, I don’t even have to do that for many countries… I haven’t heard any screams about duties/import taxes from customers so that must be working on their end too. -Stewart http://www.indenter.com/comics

I just answered a buyer from Canada on a shipping quote… and it actually turned out to be LESS expensive to send my item to Canada than to Priority Mail it within the states. One of those things. Cynthia

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – My whole point is there might be some behind the scenes goings on with eBay and/or the seller that caused this "glitch" since I’m sure you won’t be able to duplicate it on the UPS site. This is why I have always recommended using your own calculator instead of that crap eBay offers. I thought of using the shipping calculator, since I don’t try and make shipping profit… but from what I read, and the experimenting I’ve done… it looks like I either have to set things to where I’d lose money about half of the time… or so I always make money on shipping, and end up gouging some people a lot…
Did you use UPS or USPS under it? I ship exclusively UPS and didn’t find it accurate for my needs. Plus, the option of adding an additional handling fee that is hidden from the buyer makes it a real turn-off for me. I believe in full disclosure when it comes to shipping & handling. So I’ve just gone with the tried and true homemade calculator… I put some general terms in my auction to use as a guideline for domestic US shipping for most of my items… and beyond that, I give weights for items that I’ll estimate by weight, and when the auction closes I weigh the whole thing with packing to make sure I’m giving the most accurate (for me) and best price (for the buyer) on shipping that I can.
That’s great. I have more respect for merchants that give all the facts to the buyer to make an informative purchase. I’m watching and bidding on items right now that I see a wide variety in S&H charges. The average charge is $10 for shipping while a few bounced between $20-$30. Needless to say, when I did the math and found the total price cheaper than the ones with the lower S&H I only bid on them. I don’t support gougers even if it means I have to pay a higher price from someone else. Since I do a lot of international business… there are particulars, like keeping packages under 4 lbs when I can, to give some less-expensive shipping options that helps me compete with a lot of folks who just go with the calculator and calculate on the high-end.

Absolutely! Maybe you are starting to see the need for an increase? Seriously, the eBay shipping calculator never was an accurate tool from day one and should never be used as it stands, especially for UPS. I’m not sure if it works well for USPS, though? Rita

Could be any number of scenarios, like maybe they have more trucks/planes going a particular route and can offer a better deal. Strange, and worth double-checking.. but it does happen. When I mail packages at the local post office, they are regularly telling me once the package is weighed that I have other options I hadn’t originally considered… and sometimes they are cheaper… other times maybe only a dime more for Priority or something like that. As in all things, it can pay to investigate your shipping options. -Stewart
I have had similar experiences. I sent a wireless keyboard to Spain once. The airmail price was $30 something and would take 4-6 days in getting there. The global priority price was $23 including insurance and would take 2-3 days in getting there. Needless to say, I went for the global. I emailed the buyer to tell them the shipping price was significantly less (about $15) than they paid and I was going to send it back. They said never mind … consider it a bonus for doing a good job. :)
