Question:
The best way is to pay an exorbitant amount of money to the USPS for parcel post shipping and email your buyer in about 3-5 months to see if they got their shipment. If not, wait another 1-2 months and email your customer again. My 2 cents, Kevin (_I_)
Response:
It still be considered the usual domestic rates since Hawaii and Alaska are considered the United States even thou those states are not physically bordering other states in the mainland you have the same domestic or U.S. rates. You can calculate postage via the www.usps.com site. Therefore you can use Priority, Parcel, Express, etc and the Delivery Confirmation, Insurance etc with Hawaii and Alaska like with other states. johnml43

Not exactly like other states. The difference is that parcel post to most of the country takes a week or less, it can take several times that to Alaska or Hawaii, making priority mail the only real option.

Parcel post is going to be cheapest if you can fit under the size and weight restrictions, but will take quite a while to be delivered. Priority mail will be much faster to Hawaii, but much more expensive for a heavy item. You can’t ship except by air to Hawaii for the other main couriers, i.e. UPS, Airborne & FedEx, so they aren’t really an option. Sending a 20 pound box by UPS next day air to Hawaii would cost over $50 from the Dallas, Texas area, Priority mail a bit over $30. The only killer for the post office is they have tighter restrictions on the package size, when the item is subject to a surcharge as oversized.

Looking to ship a large item or pallet of items to Hawaii. My ad states that I ship free to anywhere in the continental U.S. so the customer wants me to ship to a "port" on the West coast, then she’ll have it shipped in from there. Only problem is neither of us know of the name of any companies that do this on the West coast. I know of a shipping company called Laparkan that operates on the East coast but nothing on the West. Anyone have any leads for me? If I knew what these docking/shipping companies were technically called, it would big a big help. — Give blood – play hockey
You could try www.matson.com to get the goods to Honolulu and www.htbyb.com for interisland transfers — This seems to have reduced some guy’s spam.

I just received some merchandise from China which was handled by Silverwings Unique In LA. This was the first time for me to import anything like that since it involved clearing it through customs and there were about half a dozen carriers involved to get it from there to here. I was very pleased with how they helped me. Ron http://www.s-wings.com

The USPS service to/from and in Hawaii is superb. I paid for an auction last Friday morning and the item mailed that day from Tennessee was in my hands on Monday morning. Not bad for under 4 bucks! Plus, a watch sent to me from Hong Kong on Friday was also delivered on Monday. Now THAT’s impressive! Here in Hawaii, all mail within the state is typically delivered overnight. One of the reasons it’s so fast is that everything comes here by air except parcel post, and we have a LOT of flights coming in from everywhere daily. They’d bring it over in trucks but our piece of the Interstate Highway System is still waiting for the bridge to LA to open. ;o)

I live in Hawaii so let me give you the lowdown on shipping from an "expert." USPS Priority Mail typically arrives from any point on the mainland in 2-5 days. The cost, up to 5 lbs., is exactly the same as if you mailed it next door. Over 5 lbs., zone pricing kicks in. Hawaii is Zone 8 from all mainland locations. If you live in NY and ship to CA, that is also a Zone 8 rate. So, unless you live in the middle of the country, there’s really no cost difference even at higher weights. At 5 lbs. 1 ounce, mailing next door would be $7.70 while Boston to Houston would be $9.55 and Boston to CA or HI would be $10.40. So, as you can see, mailing halfway across the US is only 85 cents less than mailing to HI. When one quotes a Priority Mail price for up to 5 lbs., there is no additional cost to ANY US Zip code (even Guam!). Over 5 lbs, unless you live smack dab in the middle of the country, your cost will be the same as to many other mainland states. A reasonable alternative is FedEx Ground which IS available to Hawaii. They ship via ground to the west coast and then put it on a plane to Hawaii. Interestingly, we have UPS Ground available when shipping From HI. They put it on their otherwise empty plane to CA and send via ground from there. As long as you ship via Priority Mail and use the rates as shown on the www.usps.com website, your customer will have no problem. With Priority Mail still not moving on passenger planes it’s a little slower now but still reliable. Assuming that you DO live in the middle of the US and that the cookware weighs 12 lbs, the difference between shipping 12 lbs. to Los Angeles and to Honolulu would be $5.35 ($13.75 vs. $19.10). If you live towards one coast or the other there will be no difference.

Go with USPS Priority Mail. UPS tends to charge a lot more, no matter how much the package weighs. I’m from HI and every year I compare rates when I send packages home under the delusion UPS will be cheaper. It’s that "can’t ship by ground" business. And as James said, locals are used to higher shipping and slow mail. :) Astranya

I’m sorry, but that’s only true up to 5.0 pounds for Priority Mail (and for lesser weighs of Parcel Post). Zones (distances) come into play at a certain weight value – and the parcel in question weighs 7 pounds. With UPS, you can’t ship "ground" across water, it has to go Air, which can be considerably more expensive. Get quotes from both, and give your buyer the options. You’ve already stated Hawaii and Alaska could cost more for shipping, so you’re already covered.

Tammy, I don’t understand why you are so worried about this. Your auction stated that shipping costs would vary to AK and HI — and that’s what the buyer bought into. The buyer lives in Hawaii, they know it costs a bit more to ship to them, so nothing’s going to be a big surprise. Send them the EOA and quote your shipping costs, just like any other auction. From Utah, USPS shipping is under $12; from Ohio, it will be a bit more, but not that much. Kris
