Question:
You have a lot of days left on this, let him get outbid. Sherry
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hello fellow ebayers. I have an auction going for a rare plastic model kit and I specified I would only ship to a US address in the auction settings. The problem is someone from Peru bid $41 for it. He is a new user. The first bid was from another new user for $27 but he is in the US. I emailed the high bidder and asked if he was sure he wanted it and I explained he would be responsible for sending an international money order in US dollars. I also told him the $5 shipping charge was for US bidders only. So should I cancel his bid or give him a chance? The auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=550128503

There is a difference between "ship to a US address" and "US bidders only". I have frequently sold items to bidders in Europe and South America and then had them ask to have the item sent to a US address, often a relative’s house where they will pick up the item on their next visit. You’ve still got several days left in the auction, so I’d probably wait to hear back from him … if no response in another day or two, you can still cancel the bid if you still feel uncomfortable. — P. Give him a chance. I’ve gotten a number of bidders who were in different countries, but wanted the item shipped to a US address, and paid in US funds. The last one was from Italy, but turned out to be someone wanting the item shipped to an APO address (works the same as shipping to the US) and paid with a US postal money order. As long as you emailed him and made it clear that you would only accept US currency, and the quoted shipping was only for shipping within the US, you’ll probably be fine. My only Latin American winner was a U.S. citizenn living in Chile. He was buying it for a relative in California who didn’t have Internet access; the relative mailed me a check and I shipped the item to her. Like Richard, I’ve had plenty of APO/FPO folks who use foreign ISPs. And I’ve had a couple Americans working abroad who wanted items shipped to relatives here. After wasting lots of time calculating overseas shipping based on ISP location, then learning that the item was being mailed to a US address, I quit ASS-U-MEing anything. GK

For heavens sake, give him a chance to answer! Two of my best sales (one of them being on e-bay) were from the Far East. They paid top dollar. Sure, the delivery of the money went slow, but they delivered and have been good customers since. BTW – One of them found it to be cost-effective to send me cold-hard- cash by registered mail. (Never underestimate the desirability of certain things overseas. For example, it amazed me to find huge interest and top-dollar payments for classic Japanese cameras from Japanese bidders!)

sounds like to me you’re already willing to work with him so why would you want to cancel his bid.

The auction: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=550128503 I’ve never had a problem with international shipments….BUT: 1. Your auction terms clearly state "Will ship to United States only" 2. That says nothing about BIDS from international bidders, only that you won’t ship to an international address. Your problem may be the wording of your email, if you now want to cancel the bid. Did you tell the bidder that you would only ship to the US address, or did you waffle a bit when you specified terms of payment and basically "accept" the bid? If you want to accept a BidPay money order and ship this to an international address, you should notify him immediately. Kris
Thanks for the advice. I asked if he wanted it. I’m still waiting for his response. I’ll probably let the auction as is. If he doesn’t pay I can relist and get my list fee back. I might as well give him a chance.

If by the time there’s 24 hours left on the auction he hasn’t replied, cancel his bid, not a nice thing to do but you have to protect yourself and it is stated in the description it’s US only. If he does reply and he does want to go through with the transaction, let him know about http://www.bidpay.com , the bidder uses their debit/credit visa card to send you a US money order, costs the buyer $5 but it’s cheaper, quicker & safer than sending a money order from Peru/any other country. By the way, I think that’s a cool item you have there (I saw all 3 Robotech series in the space of about 1-2 weeks last year, loved it) — Rid
