Question:
You can do an awful lot of auction photos in 20 megs, provided you don’t leave the old photos up forever.
Another way to save space is to be aware of us modemers who are grateful when sellers refrain from using 1MB pictures in their auctions. — Craig http://cgi6.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewListedItems&userid=musi… http://amdm.cjb.net

I have a debit card with my checking acct. but when I was living in FL last yr I had a horrible time with the ISP I signed up with down there and they double charged me for the service causing me to bounce alot of checks which is why it scares the hell outta me to use it to pay for any online service now. I just feel safer knowing I have control of when and how much to pay. I know I’ll have to get used to giving out my debit card info if I want webhosting but since I’m on low income I can’t afford to lose all that money again. I guess I should feel lucky, the bank where my husband goes won’t give him a debit card, his credit sucks!
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Kris, I would love to change ISP’s but right now I can’t. This is a local company that will send me a paper bill in the mail because I no longer have a credit card. None of my business, but almost any bank in the world will give you a debit card linked to a bank account, and you can use the debit card like a credit card to open an account with any ISP you please. Most website hosting services are going to want a credit card, so you might as well solve the problem instead of trying to work around it. Richard Ward

I’ve used up all of my webspace on my ISP and now need to find a web hosting service. I don’t want to just pick and choose one so if anyone uses something other than your ISP I would love to hear suggestions.
I use baypal, the $5 plan for 700 images. Paypal is the accepted form of payment…and I used it even before I decided to add my cc to the account. They have other services besides image hosting. They have a smaller free account…something like 15 or 30 images. L

I know of a bunch of people that I’ve pointed towards ebay, and they get excited until I tell them they need a credit card to sign up. I try to tell them they won’t get charged for buying on ebay, but they’re still leary of putting their CC# on the net. I’ve bought hundreds of items on ebay and online stores w/o a hitch, but that’s not enough for some people.
Craig, you only need a credit card online with eBay if you SELL. Otherwise, there is no need to have one if one is just buying. I signed up for a second, buying only account that I sometimes use and I did not need to give eBay any kind of credit card information to register. I believe eBay only requires such from web email addresses such as Hotmail, Yahoo and the like. But from less popular web addresses as well as one’s own ISP, one can still sign up with no card info at all. Mind you, folks leary of putting CC# on the net will need to pay for their wares via check or MO… and need to be sure they are not bidding on auctions that only take online payments. Cynthia

<snip Start an account with the minimum balance necessary to get a debit card. Pull out everything down to the level that you won’t have to pay a service charge (often $100 or so on a personal account with no bells or whistles). You now have a debit card with a $100 limit, you have no real exposure beyond that. No checks can bounce, because you use that account for nothing but the payments that must be made with a credit card, like web hosting or your ISP. It’ll save you money in the long run. Richard Ward

This is a local company that will send me a paper bill in the mail because I no longer have a credit card. I wish some of the big companies would do this because I hate being so limited. I even have to watch how long I’m online every month and I am paying what others do for unlimited service…$20.00 a month. Just because you don’t have a credit card doesn’t mean you’re stuck in that situation. In addition to credit cards, Prodigy will bill charges to many local phone companies – SBC affiliates (Ameritech, Pacific Bell, Nevada Bell, Southwestern Bell, or SNET). Other nationals do much the same thing, and many have check debiting – which is the same as writing a check but you get the other advantages. I would feel horrible if I deleted any part of those websites…but I would if it weren’t friends and family because there is alot of family photos on there right now but I’m going to ask around and see if I can just have them put on CD. Tammy, they’re pulling on you — big time.
Those websites are there so they can see all of those things, right? They can download it and store it on their own hard drives, on their own CD-Rs, floppies, or print it all out. Sounds to me that there are a lot of control issues here – but that’s none of my business. I know it can be done, I just don’t know if any of them want that. And my family isn’t real sold on the idea of my doing Ebay so it’s a touchy subject. Tammy If it’s a touchy subject with your husband, you need to talk it over. If it’s touchy with someone who does not support your financially or who you do not live with, as an adult, you don’t have to listen to that. I can’t imagine what’s wrong with "doing" eBay, unless your relatives have heard nothing but scam stories (same as my in-laws, who think I’m into weird things because *everyone* knows there’s *nothing* on the internet but porno). Kris Hi Kris, I used to do websites for friends and family so my space a(a measly 5megs) was used up a long time ago which is why I had to start using Geocities. Well, now I can’t use them anymore either because of their rules against auction photos. I did sneak some on temporarily until they decide to pull them. Now I need to look for alot more space. I think you need to start with a new ISP. That’s a pitiful amount of space, and 10mb less than I get with Prodigy for $16 a month (paid in advance for a year). I know some of the regional ISPs are nice, but if you do *any* travelling with a notebook computer, you’ll realize how nice it is not to have to pay long-distance charges to use your ISP when out of town. In the meantime, are you sure you don’t have a lot of things that need to be deleted? Those websites you did for your friends and family — if it were me, and I was out of space and having to pay, I’d download them and email them to the owners OR arrange to put them on their own webspace. Then I’d delete them from online and have the space for myself. Kris I’ve used up all of my webspace on my ISP and now need to find a web hosting service. I don’t want to just pick and choose one so if anyone uses something other than your ISP I would love to hear suggestions. How much does your ISP let you have? I’ve been running auctions using Prodigy’s webspace for images for five years, and I’ve never come close to using more than 10mb of the 15mb I’m allotted. I also have lots of other things on that space, besides auction photos. One thing I do, though, is use WS-FTP to manage the various folders – and I delete images either 30 days after the item has sold or when I’ve been left feedback. Kris

I use BayPay (www.baypal.com) for $5.00 a month you get a lot and they have programs to help list your auctions, too. They have a smaller account that is free. Sooner or later I’m sure the price will go up, like the rest, but for now it works great for me. Also, AOL advertises no credit card needed, although I don’t use AOL, can’t tell you much about that.
