It means that he is paying you by transfering money from his bank account. It also mean that he is not using a credit card to guarantee the payment. Further, it means that he can cancel the payment up until the point that PayPal says it is completed. Also, he may not have the money in his bank account to cover the echeck.

eChecks are electronic checks, that go thru the standard clearing cycle. I think they may be cheaper to process than ACH transfers. Please let us know if you get an email from PayPal when the check clears. I was paid by an echeck a few weeks ago, and got no such email.
