Never heard of ‘em. What, i’m wondering, is the ‘RAB’ mind on the selling of ‘piercing’ and ‘tattooing’ kits? I’m not sure if i really support EBay on this… What does RAB think? There ARE things EBay won’t sell, i’m going to go look at that list and see what they won’t sell, but i’m wondering… TQ

well there have always been whores in the supply side. One particular co comes to mind that advertised in the trades for a 489 starter kit. There ARE things EBay won’t sell, i’m going to go look at that list and see what they won’t sell,
very little, they warn about copyright stuff, but the only two thing that I KNOW they wont sell is Hitler memorabilia and guns. They used to sell a lot of Hitler stuff but the German government bitched. R

I think selling piercing and tattooing kits is probably a bad idea, if yer goal is to support the art(s), in general. HOWEVER – It should be "allowed." If I want to buy a $200 tattoo kit and scar myself and my friends for life, that’s my fucking right to do so, goddamnit. Not to sound like Mike-fucking-Trainer, but this is a slippery slope. Where are you going to draw the line? I believe I should be able to buy a scalpel, a piercing needle, or a tattoo machine if I damn well please.

I absolutely agree that private individuals have a right to buy supplies of all sorts to work on themselves and their close partners — control over ones own body should be a fundamental right… Although I feel that the vendor has some responsibility to inform them about the issues involved with using these supplies irresponsibly. What I have a *BIG* problem with is piercing and tattoo kits that are MARKETED as a quick-start-your-own-business kits, encouraging frighteningly underqualified artists to permeate the industry. I believe that companies who do that are culpable in the misactions of their customers and should be held responsible for the horrible end products… Shannon — — BME: Body Modification Ezine: http://www.bmezine.com/ Modcode Version: 0.02 M*(AR) a- D– d b+:+ P+<+++ T++ s+ S++ I-<+ e++++$ c+++:+<+++:+++ R+++ r++ y?

absolutely!! It’s my body i’ll do what I please. that’s why I always thought suicide laws are wrong. Although I feel that the vendor has some responsibility to inform them about the issues involved with using these supplies irresponsibly.
yeah probably ought to include some kind of instruction, but refer to #1 above What I have a *BIG* problem with is piercing and tattoo kits that are MARKETED as a quick-start-your-own-business kits, encouraging frighteningly underqualified artists to permeate the industry. I personally do not like it either, but you cannot hold them responsible for their product after it has left their hands. People are after responsible for their own actions. lets say I buy a bunch of tools and lumber from Menards and you come to me to build your house, I of course do not know how to build your house and when it falls down around you are you going to hold Menards responsible for my inability to build your house and your own stupidity for hireing me to do it just because they sold me the supplies. Or sue Ford because they sold me a car and I don’t know how to drive? Freedom carrys a burden of responsibility. Every artists here gets a release signed by their clients stateing in effect that the client is responsible for "all loss cause or action" ya can’t have it both ways. Just my $.02

Normally I’d agree with you… but… These tattoo and piercing "kits" that are MARKETED as a "start your own business for $500" and include things like a "certificate" to hang on the wall makes these companies complicit. They are operating with FULL KNOWLEDGE of the damage that’s being done by what they’re selling, and they are encouraging these supplies to be used in a dangerous and irresponsible fashion. The breaking point is the certificate in my opinion… It’s one thing if a customer takes the kit and abuses the public with it, but these companies are actually HELPING their customers do this. given a "certificate" strengthens your point, but,,, S&R , National, Supreme, etc ad infinitum cert is meaningless, and yes I am sure that there are lots of poor dummies out there who see something up on the wall and assume that it means "something". I can issue certificates that say "this tattoo/piercing shop is insured for property coverage and BOTH general AND Professional Liability. I suppose that some would read that I insure that the tattoo they receive will be good. As you know that is not the case. I protect the tattooist/piercer, not guarantee the artistic merit of their work. I really agree with you that they should be shot, but I do not think anything can be done legally. S&R used to advertise in everything for their 489 starter kit, but the pressure brought to then by their legitimate customers did slow that down a lot.

I think this is my ’sticking point’, too. These people KNOW that they are sending this stuff out to people who won’t read everything, won’t care about cleanliness, won’t care about what it may do to the reputation of the larger body of tattooists/pierceists in their area… It just seem amazingly irresponsible to hand this stuff out to people you will never meet or talk to. I wish there were a way to make EBay run a disclaimer or something to the effect that no tape or ‘kit’ can replace actual real-life experience and buy at your own risk… I dunno. TQ

I agree with you on that Shannon; I suggest that the vendors have to be forced (by law) to get tattooed by at least ONE of their students. Maybe one tattoo per 50 buyers. The new artist has to sign that he thoroughly reviewed the accompanied Do-It-Yourself, 30 minutes videotape, before he applies the outline on the kit-vendor. Udo
