- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi Folks, Before I waste another nickel, I felt I might get a few ideas here on my batch of plastic toy guns and action figure accessories didn’t sell. I had them under, what I thought was the correct spot. One of the item numbers is: 6017943076. Was it too wordsy? Poor pictures, incorrect category, maybe they will never sell and I need to get over it. People search by brand name. You didn’t describe the items, their sizes, their conditions, or mention what they were. If you self-host your images, you can put up as many as you need to, for free. I believe the lot is too large (ie, too many items). OOPS: If there is some oversight on your part, you WILL NOT REFUND SHIPPING??? I see many other problems that would keep me from bidding. Kris

The minimum profitable eBay sale is $19.63.
Ditto. Here’s my approach: imagine that you are a (skeptical) buyer seeing this ad. What questions do you have about the items? (Especially, what are the things you would be able to find out if you saw the things in person that you can’t tell over the Internet). Of those questions, assume the worst possible answer to the ones not answered by the listing text. Now would you bid?

I’m fairly thick skinned, and knowing little of successful ebay marketing, I think I’m asking the right folks. But let me add that I’m not envisioning making a great living on ebay, I just want to get rid of stuff. The other item that didn’t sell was a Garmin 12XL that I thought stood out from the rest, item 5831554892. Thanks for your opinion. Joe

Hundreds of eBay non-smokers die every day. Good.

Response:

About smoking…..I too have seen many family members die, most of cancer and all of the family members NEVER smoked or drank in their lifetme.!!!!

Response:

People die every day whether they smoked or not.. God has his hand in who dies, when and how! All the vitamins and facelifts in the world won’t put a stop to this!!!!

Response:

If the Doctor tells you there is no hope, why quit?

Doctors have been wrong before. I don’t remember any of them claiming smoking was "harmless". They all claimed they hated it, just would not quit until after it was too late <shrug.

At least they kept their word. I smoked for a hell of a long time myself. Knew full well it was bad.

This baffles me. Why would you smoke if you watched your family members die from it as a kid? I mean .. especially if you knew you were killing yourself, why would you even start? My mother was a smoker, so I decided it was good enough for me, too. I had my first and last cigarette at age 5.

Response:

If the Doctor tells you there is no hope, why quit? Doctors have been wrong before.

Doctors some times may be wrong, but when they tell you, you have lung cancer that they can’t operate on, no, you do not suddenly "get better" no matter what you may have "heard". Now the medical science has come a long way, and many cancers are now curable. I don’t remember any of them claiming smoking was "harmless". They all claimed they hated it, just would not quit until after it was too late <shrug. At least they kept their word. I smoked for a hell of a long time myself.
Not really sure about that. Started as a kid, as rebellion? Looking "cool"? Really don’t know. I well remember having to "teach my body" to accept them. Seems funny now. Then when I was an adult and could make my own decisions, guess I just did not care? Who knows, it’s been a hell of a long time, and I sure don’t miss it. Especially when I see what they cost now. In this state name brand are close to $50.00 a carton now. Amazing. — Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza. –Dave Barry

You didn’t say how far along they were, but still … stranger things have happened. Whether it’s too late or not, why shouldn’t a person quit smoking? Better yet, why should a person start?

No "stranger things have not happened". I said they were told they could not be helped, and were told about how long they had left. You don’t just get better for no apparent reason. As to why? Why do people shove food in their mouth when they are already 200 pounds over weight? Why do they drive 100mph in the rain? You can "why" till the cows come, I doubt you will find an answer. Just the way the human race is I guess. — Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer.
I bust out laughing when I see some 250 lb obese pig telling someone they shouldn’t smoke.

At least the 250lb obese pig is harming only himself. However, smoking is _always_ a choice. Obesity may also be a choice, but in a small percentage, it isn’t. — Crazy Dog wfh at crazy hyphen dog dot fsnet dot co dot uk

People die every day whether they smoked or not.. God has his hand in who dies, when and how! All the vitamins and facelifts in the world won’t put a stop to this!!!!

lol here we go again..let me guess, your a smoker right? anyway, its your life so do what you want. but every pleasure in life comes with a price. it takes a non smoker like me exactly 1 second of inhaling cigarette smoke to create a state of panic, every defense mechanism screaming out RUN AWAY! so I run away. but thats just me. of course, I don’t have to run away, I can defy my bodys defense systems sit in that smoke for one hour, but I’ve been there done that and this is just not making me a happier person after that hour, and thats a verified fact. in fact, it will do me more harm than good. hence I go away. unfortunatley, only one can be true: either my body defense mechanisms are sick, not responding properly, abnormal, etc… OR smokers are in total denial that its bad for them, and part of what cigarettes do/are made to do is create the illusion that it is okay to smoke, and maybe bypass/neutralize defense mechanisms so you can no longer detect whats good or bad for you. EITHER ONE IS possible I admit to that. but which one it is, I am not sure. you smoke, and you want to smoke more.. I smell smoke, and I want no more, so I go away. end of story. in the end, you are doing/thinking your doing whats best for ya, and so am I. so its all good. and in the end, I will die, and you will die. so maybe its not about who dies when, etc etc, but rather how we all live before we die. anyway, goodluck

Most people that are involved in hit and run accidents are non smokers.

They’re usually too drunk to be smoking. Most people that get killed by a Bus are smokers

This usually happens at the beginning of the month when the eagle shits and the welfare recipient trade their check for cigarettes and alcohol. 99.0% of people attacked by sharks are non smokers (suppose they taste better?)

These people usually have a body fat index in excess of 30% and naturally smell like chum. Fat people are hard to kidnap

They are usually in the safest place in the world, a bank they don’t even have an account with arguing why they shouldn’t have to pay a $3.00 convenience fee for cashing a check. Rita

Oh, you must mean Don Lancaster’s posts. Ed

Response:

As I posted something similar to this in a laptop users group, I will try and keep this brief: My sincere thanks goes out to whomever it was that reported me to eBay for having the audacity to post an auction in a *gasp* eBay MARKETING group. I’m sorry you were more offended by that than the hundreds of porn ads that circulate through this newsgroup every day.

On behalf of the person who did report you, (it wasn’t me,) but ‘you are welcome.’ as for being more offended by your ad than porn, it isn’t likely! equally, yes, but not more. In your case, you made yourself an easy target to stop. While some of the porn ads can’t be stopped, those who spam their ebay auctions and other programs can and will be stopped when possible. The only thing I can think of (though after reading I am pretty sure I know who is responsible for this) is that this person couldn’t afford the auction and got upset.

Maybe it just wasn’t something he wanted to buy regardless of price. (OOPS, there are women here who could have complained also.) That’s the only possibility because otherwise it would just be a really spiteful and sad person who wanted to sabotage another’s success. So thanks again, spineless one, for not having the bal*s to confront me on this one. You have a happy new year. As I posted something similar to this in a laptop users group…

You think it was one person here, but you had to apologize to the laptop group, too? What does that tell you? Maybe that spamming isn’t appreciated anywhere it doesn’t belong? You just learned a lesson. Maybe it was the hard way, but a lesson, none the less. I’m not saying you need to beg forgiveness or anything, but you should at least consider that you suffered the consequences of your own actions and not the actions of someone reporting the offense. After all, are you to blame if someone robs your neighbors house and you report him? Or is it the criminal’s fault for robbing the house in the first place? Buck — But that’s just my opinion.

I’m not offended by porn ads. And who’s blocking those 100 per day from getting to my inbox? Ty, are you the chairperson this month? I want my porn, dammit! Lumpy — Eeek! http://www.digitalcartography.com/tarantula.htm

If anyone reported you, it wasn’t me. I can’t say I’ve ever reported anyone for posting to this group unless it’s for something else – i.e. fee avoidance or another policy violation. The only thing I can think of (though after reading I am pretty sure I know who is responsible for this) is that this person couldn’t afford the auction and got upset.

You’re right, I can’t ‘afford’ the auction, however I would NEVER buy a laptop on eBay, so quit trying to make lame excuses. You’ve now tried to sell the laptop at least TWICE, it didn’t meet your reserve. Might I give you a free suggestion: Try an auction longer than 24 hours. Try lowering your reserve. Try better pictures. That’s the only possibility because otherwise it would just be a really spiteful and sad person who wanted to sabotage another’s success.

How were either of the two auctions you had for your laptop sabotaged? They both ended on their own, not meeting their reserve? So thanks again, spineless one, for not having the bal*s to confront me on this one. You have a happy new year.

Thus illustrating that: You don’t know the difference between marketing and marketPLACE You didn’t read the FAQ or even a sampling of the posts of the group. I’m sorry you were more offended by that than the hundreds of porn ads that circulate through this newsgroup every day.

I don’t think I’ve seen 100 porn posts to AMOE in an entire year, and I watch pretty closely. Then again, I don’t use AOL, so maybe they add them for AOLusers. The only thing I can think of (though after reading I am pretty sure I know who is responsible for this) is that this person couldn’t afford the auction and got upset. That’s the only possibility because otherwise it would just be a really spiteful and sad person who wanted to sabotage another’s success.

Let me expand your consciousness. There were probably a dozen people on this newsgroup who reported you. So thanks again, spineless one, for not having the bal*s to confront me on this one.

Why should anyone have to confront you so you can harass them, put them on porn lists, etc? If I see you robbing a bank, I don’t confront you and see if I can get shot, I pick up the phone and let the nice police officer who gets paid for stuff like that take care of it. — Outgoing mail is certified bollocks

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – As I posted something similar to this in a laptop users group, I will try and keep this brief: My sincere thanks goes out to whomever it was that reported me to eBay for having the audacity to post an auction in a *gasp* eBay MARKETING group.

I haven’t seen a dozen, over several years. In fact, this has to be about the best newsgroup I’ve ever seen, with respect to minimal spam – well, except for professional spammer Stephan Ducharme.

My sincere thanks goes out to whomever it was that reported me to eBay for having the audacity to post an auction in a *gasp* eBay MARKETING group.

a. People here routinely report spam. Nothing personal. And not just to eBay. Some will even check and see if the spammer also violated their ISP agreement. b. Had you done the least bit of homework, you’d have discovered alt.marketPLACE.online.ebay, where ads are welcome (if ignored) and you’d have noticed … c. Ads on marketPLACE rarely get responses. Ads on marketING frequently get responses, and anyone considering spamming here needs to read few first. I’m sorry you were more offended by that than the hundreds of porn ads that circulate through this newsgroup every day.

Actually, my newserver is apparently filtering those. I rarely see more than a couple a week. I wasn’t the one who reported you (likely several people did). But it’s up to the users here to keep the place from turning into marketPLACE. <http://pages.ebay.com/help/new/usenet-policy.html — http://www.access-one.com/rjn email4rjn AT yahoo DOT com NOT speaking for any employer, client or Internet Service Provider.

Actually the reason I found this is because I am looking for a pair of these to replace another cheap pair I have. These sell for 43 bucks +shipping (total about 53) all over the web and I am willing to give 35 total for a pair on ebay. The reason I did not buy these is besides the fact it was hard to read< There is one line about the item and two pages of what a great guy he is. The winner got a great deal and will be happy with them. I will wait for the next one to come up from a seller I am comfortable with.

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – From following closely 10 auctions there appears very little difference between the NEW RETAIL price for AMD cpu’s and secondhand prices they are getting on ebay. As far as I can see pointless buying secondhand cpu’s price saving not big enough to risk dodgy secondhand. There is a closely guarded secret about eBay marketing which has been unavailable to the general public until now. Many have paid hundreds, even thousands of dollars (or pounds- whatever) for this secret information, but because you’ve signed up for our daily, er.. newsletter by posting here, we’ll give it to you absolutely FREE. You only pay a small shipping and handling charge. Here it is: If the item you’re looking for is available for less elsewhere, don’t buy it on eBay. BobR

There’s upcoming federal legislation that will eliminate this problem by taxing every non-eBay transaction that fails to meet the eBay closing price. — Many thanks, Don Lancaster Synergetics 3860 West First Street Box 809 Thatcher, AZ 85552 Please visit my GURU’s LAIR web site at http://www.tinaja.com

… very little difference between the NEW RETAIL price for AMD cpu’s and secondhand prices they are getting on ebay.

eBay is not the Low Price source. eBay is the Random Price source. And some item categories seem to attract people who have little notion of prevailing market conditions. Many products are routinely bid up over current market value, and even above MSRP. If you wait long enough, and bottom-feed or snipe on enough auctions, you’ll eventually get what you want at a price you like. But if your need is more urgent, look elsewhere. Tip: don’t buy a used CPU if it’s photographed on a carpet — Regards, PO Box 248 Bob Niland Enterprise which, due to spam, is: 67441-0248 USA email4rjn AT yahoo DOT com http://www.access-one.com/rjn Unless otherwise specifically stated, expressing personal opinions and NOT speaking for any employer, client or Internet Service Provider.

From following closely 10 auctions there appears very little difference between the NEW RETAIL price for AMD cpu’s and secondhand prices they are getting on ebay.

BobR

I agree, i actually got my paypal account suspended for a couple of days because of that book, I guess i learned my lesson not to mess around with copyright issues. Anyways, i will no longer sell these ebooks, but what i was really wondering is, am I allowed to make my own compilation CD (if i self-publish it) containing public domain? (i.e. public domain has no copyright) For e.g. while doing my research, http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3522578347&categor… Would this be legal? All of these books belong to public domain, would this be a okay if I make my own compilation CD just like what this person did?

Assuming that you’re correctly assessing what is and isn’t public domain, which is a somewhat daring assumption, note that this auction has bombed. That’s the problem–if it’s public domain, the material is being acquired from freely downloadable sources. Why would someone pay you rather than download the material for free? I think the odds against your making more than the cost of the CD back are considerable. Deborah Stevenson

Response:

that you can’t be too ambiguous If any intellectual property was recently rendered in tangible form in the US, it IS automatically covered by copyright. There is thus far less public domain material than you think. Are you saying that any publisher who publishes an out of copyright book automatically becomes the copyright owner of that work? This would create a minefield as numerous publishers re-publish classics on a regular basis all over the world!

What Don is saying is that new creations are automatically copyrighted when rendered into tangible form, without the need for registration. He is not saying that older works can be copyrighted by someone else. There some workarounds, however, that do give a form of protection to such republication. Publishers can and do add copyrightable material to their published versions of public domain works, so you cannot republish that version in its entirety. Some examples that I think of off the top of my head: * Translations of public domain works. * Public domain books with new or copyrighted illustrations. If I print a copy of the Iliad (using a public domain translation) but add my own illustrations, you cannot republish the work as-is. * Introductions, reviews, annotations to public domain works. If my book of Shakespeare’s plays includes new introductions, footnotes I’ve created, or other material, you can’t use the work. * Added music or other enhancements. Some old movies are in the public domain;, but their sound tracks may not be, so you’d better not copy the movie and try to sell it. I believe this is how It’s A Wonderful Life was given new copyright life. The studio neglected to renew the copyright on the movie, but the copyright on the music was still in force, so every TV station in the country was forced to stop showing this film (for free) dozens of times every holiday season. I’m sure there are more.

If any intellectual property was recently rendered in tangible form in the US, it IS automatically covered by copyright. There is thus far less public domain material than you think. Further, you are not allowed to sell ANY CD-R on eBay unless you PERSONALLY hold the copyright to ALL content.
Is it still okay to sell them if you stick it all into a CD such that it is no longer a downloadable product? Nope. eBay also has a rule against selling recordable media unless it’s blank, or unless you own the copyright.

But the TRUTH is "If they don’t catch you, they won’t do anything" Those who are caught, usually lose all auctions and in some cases get their accounts suspended/NARU’d And the reason they get caught, is that sellers of similar items tattle on them.

I’m a little startled. You’ve got over 1000 feedbacks. That’s a lot of eBaying to have without knowing this one. It’s against eBay’s rules to sell/buy feedback. It looks like you might find it useful to read eBay’s rules in general. I know you said you were off of eBay for awhile, but some of this stuff was against the rules a long time ago. And if you’re trying to refamiliarize yourself, reading the restricted list is a really good idea, much better than finding out what’s prohibited when eBay kicks you off for doing it.
Is it still okay to sell them if you stick it all into a CD such that it is no longer a downloadable product?

Nope. eBay also has a rule against selling recordable media unless it’s blank, or unless you own the copyright.

Response:

These are specifically banned under the downloadable media policy: http://pages.ebay.com/help/index_popup.html?policies=downloadable.html If you aren’t the copyright owner, you can’t sell downloadable media. For what it’s worth, why would you want to sell this crap anyway? You’ll be much better off in the long run selling a legitimate product.

Thank you! I’ve been trying to find a way to report all those "You’re bidding on a link" auctions for "how to get a laptop for $25!!" and "Ebay’s Secrets Exposed!" They ALL point to an E-book that you have to download, to get the info (I’ve got an extenisve collection of links and ebooks from most of these auctions that these sellers "sell" — of course, I didn’t fall for those auctions, just found other users online that have…and google is such a wonderful place to find them, too) Thank you thank you thank you thank you. (here’s a question…if you, yourself, does not own the link or site or domain that the info is on — you’re just selling the link…doesn’t that go against a copyright law or something???)
Since they can’t order one lousy piece for your table saw, you should hold them to give you a full refund for the table saw owing to their sloppy shipping and managemnet service for the unneeded delay and incomplete order. If they balk, small claim court usually favors the buyer. — All viruses and spams are automatically removed by my ISP before reaching my inbox. To reply, change digi.mon to tds.net

I hope that they are too. This appears to be a genuine mistake from a newbie. Surely one can be forgiven (once) for assuming that a newsgroup about EBay marketing would permit marketing of EBay items. I’m sure a polite rebuke to the poster would be far more appropriate. — Richard Warr Warr Computer Consultants Ltd. www.warr.cc

I’ve seen people totally botch auctions for things that normally should sell well. (Did it once myself… where I was convinced a bad scanner picture would be enough… it wasn’t.) Cynthia In my very early days on eBay, I checked to see what things were selling the best and decided to try my hand at them. They included Pez dispensers, sports cards, post cards, and trains (this was a long time ago.) I failed miserably at each of these. I know nothing about any of those categories, so it’s a good bet I was trying to sell the most common items using unappealing descriptions that didn’t include the information buyers needed to see. I didn’t have the knowledge to spot underpriced items at garage sales and pull out the real gems. Then I decided to start selling things I knew well, even if they weren’t currently fast moving categories on eBay. In fact, I spotted a couple things that nobody else was selling not because nobody wanted those items, but because nobody thought to sell them effectively. The rest, as they say, is hysterical.

One of my friends admires the fact that I am perfectly happy to attempt selling things on eBay I know little or nothing about, instead of always sticking to what I know. Fortunately, this is NOT how I make my living… or the rest WOULD be hysterical. Still, it never hurts to be open to new things, and I’ve done OK buying and reselling books a bit. Learning more about that all the time! Cynthia

Richard Ward Richard, I do not think what he asked was silly at all. He was merely asking for advice and if you are lacking knowledge in this area or just don’t know it would be advisable to shut up and let someone answer who does. This group is to help one and other learn how to be successful in ebay marketing not for slamming new people that ask PERFECTLY VALID questions. Am I wrong? Absolutely. See below for an explanation as to why. To answer your question Jonathan I would say there are several items that never end without bids. Mainly Video games for any of the major consoles, PC computer hardware of any kind, and Name brand Tools such as Dewalt and Makita. I hope I answered your question and if I didn’t I can at least sleep at night knowing I tried. And just ignore people that feel they need to berate others in some ill found attempt to pump up their own self esteem. Have GREAT day! Odd, I did a search under Completed auctions for Makita and Dewalt, and I saw a number of auctions that ended without bids. I guess you don’t know quite as much as you though you did, do you? Same thing goes for any of the items you named. There isn’t anything that you can say will always sell, because there are far too many variables other than the item being listed. List a widget with an opening bid of $1, it may get a dozen bids and sell for $40. List it for an opening bid of $75, you generally won’t get any bids. If the widget costs you $80, you wouldn’t consider it a great selling item regardless of which way you listed it. You can’t make a list of "best selling items", because how well something sells depends on how someone lists it, the price they start it at, and what they had to pay for it, none of which are standard for all eBay sellers.

Let’s not forget things like quality of pictures, seller’s feedback, location and accepted payment methods… all of which have effects on how or IF something sells. I hate to disagree with the vast experience you’ve acquired while earning your 20 positive feedback, but the experience I’ve gotten earning my 1231 positives tell me there is no magic "best selling product".

Too true! I’ve seen people totally botch auctions for things that normally should sell well. (Did it once myself… where I was convinced a bad scanner picture would be enough… it wasn’t.) Cynthia

A simple question, what is the best selling item on ebay ? Does anybody know? J.Pare Montreal, Canada

An interesting question from a curiosity standpoint, but not really of any practical value. The best-selling item on eBay may well be netting its sellers almost nothing in profits. A more useful question (to which there would also be no easy answer) would be "what is the most profitable item sold on eBay?" Selling things on eBay is a lot more complicated than just seeing what everyone else is selling successfully. The trick is to figure out what *you* can sell successfully. Whatever the best-selling item is, it’s probably not something that I’d care to be selling.

A simple question, what is the best selling item on ebay ? Does anybody know?

#1 is CD-Rs containing software you can download for free over the Internet. Ten thousand of these are for sale on any given day. #2 is Spy stuff (do a title search on "spy"). Spy software is very popular, but there are goggles, cameras, video gear, etc. #3 is CD-Rs that tell you how to make money on eBay. There are LOTS of them for sale at all times. #4 is Banned stuff. Again, there is an emphasis on software, but banned books and banned cartoons also do well. #5 is Collection software. It’s actually the same trash software spammed into all the categories as "Software to manage your XXX collection". I don’t have any statistics on how much all this stuff sells for, but surely people wouldn’t keep listing them if they didn’t sell. People like Richard Ward who try to sell something real, of real value, obviously just don’t understand the Internet economy. Bill Turner

Dustin, Calm yourself down. You have not answered the OP’s question. He asked what the best selling item on ebay is , and you have listed some items that "never end without a bid". That circumvents the answer is a number of ways, one being a list of items is not AN item, another being that ending without bids doesn’t make IT a best seller, etc. Think about the silliness of your answer in response to the silly question. Think too, that if there were a "best – selling " item, chances are someone would be selling it, and certainly not sitting on a ng telling you what it is.

Basically, yes . First off, it’s Usenet. When you post, you get to say when you want; when others post, they get to say what they want. Secondly, there’s nothing in the group description about helping anybody, let alone helping people to be successful, so you can’t really object to somebody who doesn’t share your belief that that’s the group’s purpose. I wasn’t actually sure what Jonathan meant, as there were a couple of possible interpretations of his question. I wondered, for instance, if he might actually be inquiring about the high-price record on eBay, but then I might have wondered that because I’m curious myself.

I hate to disagree with the vast experience you’ve acquired while earning your 20 positive feedback, but the experience I’ve gotten earning my 1231 positives tell me there is no magic "best selling product". Richard Ward

You are joking – if you sold anything with a starting bid of 1 pence then anything would become the best seller on Ebay. The question is absolutely ridiculous and was probably asked by either a Troll or someone whose brain cell is enjoying it’s Summer holidays. — Best Regards Niel Humphreys Snowdon Computers
