Seller: eBay is in a prolonged slump?

Question:

Robert, weren’t you the one pointing out that eBay is trying to make it tougher on the little seller by raising listing fees?  You can’t have it both ways.  Which is it? problems understanding sarcasm rita?

Not I. Also, looking at some of the S/H fees that most sellers charge to cover their eBay and PayPal fees I don’t see any justification in bitching about fee increases as they are passed on to the buyer. oh, so now the problem is that i obviously don’t charge enough shipping and handling…

That is for you to determine. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Not really.  The only sellers that find it a "grind" are the ones that don’t have a popular product base or are trying to sell merchandise for more than it is worth. eBay is successful for the people that want to make it successful. there are several right here in this group…. Now, now, Robert, still trying to kick the sleeping dog in the privates? now, now, rita still trying to read something that isn’t there.  there are several in this group…

No, I just thought that I was your favorite.  You’re still trying to break my heart you cruel, cruel man. :^) Rita

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Seems to me (and this is a notion derived from my experience in business and marketing) that eBay is a buyers market place and has been developed as such by eBay. I’ve heard many references to it being the ‘biggest car boot/jumble sale on the planet’ and it actually IS! Not really, buyers on eBay seem to pay higher prices than they would if they shopped locally or spent 30-seconds surfing the web to find the same item new in the box for less than what they paid for the used one. It is so easy to register and play as a buyer, and eBay seem to actively promote low value listings (such as the recent 99p listing promotion). eBay seem to want as many low value items listed as possible to encourage buyers to rub their hands with glee at the opportunity to own something at a price far far far below its real market value (while eBay rub their hands at the rising number of ‘users’). yep, not to mention those listing fees from those who are going to make a "bundle" Robert, weren’t you the one pointing out that eBay is trying to make it tougher on the little seller by raising listing fees?  You can’t have it both ways.  Which is it?

For me, late June through mid-August are the worst months on eBay, I usually just spend the time accumulating product for the better times in the fall, and buying Christmas presents on eBay.

I’m prowling flea markets and garage sales every weekend now that the weather has warmed; It satisfies my cravings for new junk and I pick up items to sell also! Tomorrow the town next door to mine is having a borough-wide yard sale, so it should be a fun morning! Kar

Response:

I’ve noticed things are getting really slow on eBay these days.  Is this just seasonal or the buyers are finally feeling the pain of the recession?

Ebay is in a 7 year slump. Low priced common items make money for eBay but are a sure waste of fees for sellers. I’ve found a couple of niche sites that are more profitable so I’m not too worried about ebay’s lack of buyers. If you can find a site with a lot of traffic and attract buyers to your website you can sell a lot of items that are no longer profitable on eBay.

Ooh!    I wish we had something like that here in Utah. All in one place, instead of being spread over hundreds of square miles. Kris

There’s still time to catch yourself a red-eye. ;) Yeah! Isn’t it a great idea? I love when blocks of neighbors get together and have a massive yard sale, I save on both time and gas for the car. The town puts on this thing this time each year, it’s great for the town business district too b/c hungry tourists and daytrippers turn out in droves. I can’t wait to hit the library; they’re setting up shop in their parking lot. I’m prepared, I’ve got my map (issued by boro hall) with a listing of all the participating addresses[1], a sensible suit of warm layers and comfy shoes, my packpack holding umbrella and poncho, my flashight, extra $ (small bills, natch) and my trusty Marlboro thermos. Kar, *gonna go get a good night’s rest now* [1]I’ve highlighted the streets with the most sales, and marked off a few centralized locations to park. :-)

Seems to me (and this is a notion derived from my experience in business and marketing) that eBay is a buyers market place and has been developed as such by eBay. I’ve heard many references to it being the ‘biggest car boot/jumble sale on the planet’ and it actually IS! Its a paradise for buyers and a grind for sellers and its riddled with fraud complaints. eBay should only ever be used as a means to off load cheap junk or good stock at low low loooooooooooooow prices. It is really doubtful that there are genuinely any long term, established and successful eBay businesses out there at all, but it does save the trip to the car boot field/car park or jumble sale hall with one or more wallpaper pasting tables for many people. There are many third party outlets to sell your goods on the internet nowadays, eBay can in no way be considered a serious place to build a business, but more a stock clearance/junk clearance depot.

Maybe I just met new New Mexican.   I’ve heard all of those jokey terms before, just not "kirk". Kris

Seems to me like a seasonal thing.  This week alone I’ve had more bids than the past month, oddly enough on things that "aren’t supposed" to do well in a recession–collectible toys, body art kits and that sort of thing.  Oh well.  I’m just a poor college student, so I’m not -looking- for phenomenal bids (of course I’ll never say no if that does happen), just to get money and get rid of the stuff :-) — "By the way, if one day you happen to wake up and find yourself in an existential quandary full of loathing and self doubt and racked with the pain and isolation of your pitiful meaningless existence, at least you can take a small bit of comfort in knowing that somewhere out there in this crazy old mixed up universe of ours there’s still a little place called…Albuquerque!"  –Weird Al Yankovic, "Albuquerque" Visit my ebay page http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/raystantz

im not sure if this is just a seasonal slump but what seems odd to me is the ammount of things that go unsold on ebay, if you do a completed search on some times you tend to see more unsold items than sold ones!!!!

Summer is a good time to buy for resale… Example. Last summer I bought an item for $120 on eBay. This spring, I sold the same item on eBay for $229. Cynthia
