Good info thanks. I send most of my packages 1st class, so I don’t see it being worth my while letting paypal getting their grubby hands on more money just for a slight convienience.

Well, like you, lots of my shipping recently has been First Class. But after that we differ. The PO near work is really busy the entire day. I’ll gladly pay the $0.20 for PayPal’s convience. And, if you factor in that online eDC costs only $0.13 online while it’s, what, $0.45 or so at the PO, it’s actually CHEAPER to mail via PayPal than stand in line for 20 minutes at the PO. And, I can drop them off at any drop box and away they go. No getting asked the "Fragile, hazardous, or perishable" question over and over, no getting asked about stamps, toys, etc. But, if you’d rather wait in line at the PO and pay more for Delivery Confirmation, be my guest. John

I feel bad for all of you sellers who have a busy PO. I go in drop the packages off at the counter. If they are busy i just set them there. I go get the mail while waiting and or get the next load. On busy days drop off the items to be mailed go about the days errands and stop in to pay the shipping bill on the way home. Of course knowing all the clerks personally can go a long way too. Gotta love the small towns. Future

eBay is about 5.1%, PayPal 3%. So 8% of the selling price is going to fees. I’m really not complaining. If anything I need cheaper postage.
Congratulations on your eBay sales, John. I’m glad to see that you’re not complaining about the eBay fees since 8% is still well within the boundaries of criminally and insanely low. You are doing exceptionally well. Keep up the good work.. And that’s not factoring in any 1.5% "cash back" for using my PayPal credit card to purchase postage at USPS.com and UPS.
I know the temptation is great for using the PayPal debit card to get that extra 1.5% back, but in order to do so you must keep a balance in your PayPal account, which is totally and utterly foolish. Keeping a balance at PayPal removes all leverage you might have if a problem arises and also prevents you from properly paying for auctions (using a CC) if you also buy on eBay. Rita

An easy way around it is packing peanuts.. Lightweight and they will make your package fat.

Thanks. I seem to have an eye for things that have a value, and am not against getting them free. As soon as I can figure out a way to ship the bigger stuff, I’ll be doing better.
Absolutely, you can get the best merchandise for free or being paid to haul it away. Shipping larger items is no different than the small stuff. Activate your dumpster diving genes and get a good assortment of free cardboard boxes and other packing materials. I figure 8% is an appropriate amount for eBay/PayPal to charge. Cheaper than B&M, and it allows me to sell worldwide. Of course, I can afford the 8%, since every sale is 100% profit anyway. (FYI, my company has been cleaning out the building, and has been tossing things left and right. I got permission to take anything I want from the "to be tossed" pile provided I didn’t put in there in the first place.)
I love it, a person that isn’t ashamed of dumpster diving. Take advantage of it while you can and don’t tell anyone at work what you are getting for the stuff, as they will put an immediate stop to it. Who says I do? I get paid for auctions via PayPal. That night, I log into USPS.com and use Click-n-Ship to make labels. They bill the CC virtually immediately. I log into PayPal and sweep the rest into my checking account.
My mistake, I thought you were leaving money in the account to grow interest. Daily sweeps are the best strategy when using PayPal. If I have to do UPS, I know ahead of time how much it’s going to cost, and I sweep all but a buck or two into the account. The only time I have money in PayPal is if I’m going to ship something or it’s under $2 because it’s the "cash-back" award.
That’ll work. Good luck. Rita

IF you have a paypal balance you are forced to use it. The 20 cent fee is charged by PP in addition to this for mail classes other than Priority the USPS charges .13 for the DC. That begs the question – Whats the reason to do it through paypal and pay extra ? Try shipping assistant if you dont mind waiting in line at the PO. We have a frindly small town PO ive never spent more than 20 mins in total there. Of course thats when you are dropping of 40-50

Nope go here and get this. http://www.usps.com/shippingassistant/instructions.htm You will need to use Adobe 5.0. Any newer reader will give you issues. At least according to shipping assistant tech support. But this was also a bit ago. You will still have to wait in line for postage but dc is free for priority and .13 cents for all other classes of mail. Future "I know what you want"

1) No, the PO’s I deal with typically aren’t all that bad. With the new automated do it yourself machines, its even better.
True, but my PO has a line at times at the machine. I’d rather do it at home. It’s my preference. 2) I usually don’t get DC – Maybe I should since that would likely help in any claimed non shipment dispute. Or does that require tracking ?
DC (and eDC) will help prevent some PayPal claims. I was told by a clerk that that package needs to be a certain thickness in order to get DC, or be Priority. Most of my packages are neither thick nor priority.
Ah, if you’re sending in a padded envelope, do what I do: Put a piece of styrofoam on either side of your item. Not only does it increase the thickness to 0.75 inches, it also helps prevent damage. If something is set on top of your package, it’ll rest on the styrofoam, not your item. 3) Also its the principle of ebay/paypal being one fat sloppy cow, and I’m not inclined to make it much fatter, even at slight inconvienience to myself. Paypal is certainly justified for charging a fee, and I feel justified in not wanting to contribute to a neo monopoly any more than I have to, or cutting in anymore on slim profit margins.
I’m not happy about the PayPal/eBay fees, but I understand them. Here’s some figures from my last 4 weeks of sales. Note that I only list about 6 items a week, and I’ve been listing the smaller and lower priced ones so far. Sales: + $608.60 (includes shipping payments) eBay fees: – $ 34.25 (listing and FVF) PayPal fees: – $ 21.79 Postage: – $ 90.75 eBay is about 5.1%, PayPal 3%. So 8% of the selling price is going to fees. I’m really not complaining. If anything I need cheaper postage. And that’s not factoring in any 1.5% "cash back" for using my PayPal credit card to purchase postage at USPS.com and UPS. John

I don’t have a need to keep that much postage around. (I have a friend who swears by Stamps.com) :-) And my local PO is pretty quick, rural. The one mistake I made last Christmas was waiting in line to hand in 2-lb packages with pre-paid labels. I had 2 or 3 going out every day. Near the end of the week, I got a clerk who said. "Those are like metered mail, you can just drop them in this tray over here with no waiting…" <SIGH!
Oh, and I forgot to mention, I think you can only pay through your Paypal account and NOT use the Debit card to get 1.5% back. That’s from the PayPal shipping page. Using other services is a different issue.
