This seller has found a way to get around eBay's linking policies.

Question:

"Steve Knight"s post is incorrect.

really? tell ebay that when they pulled my auctions. if someone complains they will pull it if there is any link pretty much in any way to your site. there is nothing you can do about it when they do it either.

Here’s a good example; look at this seller’s <about me page: http://members.ebay.com/aboutme/sears/ (bottom of "me" page)    In the categories where I list my items, I’m competing with scores of retailers, almost all of whom have hyperlinks leading to their <direct selling websites posted on their "me" pages. More than a few of them show their websites URL in their auction descriptions or superimposed over their images.   Both of these actions are against eBay’s rules but the sellers don’t care if the auctions get pulled. If eBay deletes the auctions, the sellers are  refunded their listing fees while benefiting from the advertising. They’re now free to sell the ex-auction item(s) direct.    I’ve begun to suspect that’s why we don’t see rules-violating auctions posted to this group, being shut down by eBay. eBay has finally wised up, opting to allow the auctions to run their course, with eBay keeping the revenues generated.

Response:

Not even wrong. You can link ANY url that genuinely adds support to the item being offered.

yes and no. You can do it but ebay can pull it and they have. If the page has links to your regular selling page or is part of it they will pull it and they have. and there is nothing you can do about it.    all it takes is someone complaining. ebay does not respond to sells who have had auctions ended early. — Knight-Toolworks & Custom Planes Custom made wooden planes at reasonable prices See http://www.knight-toolworks.com  For prices and ordering instructions.

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Is this a way we can all link to our sites? A legit way to link to your site is from your eBay About-Me page. And you can link to the A-M page in any auction. not according to ebay rules. no links to your site period. even if the link goes to info about the product (ok to do) if you have a way of getting to your regular site from it they can pull your auction. — Knight-Toolworks & Custom Planes Custom made wooden planes at reasonable prices See http://www.knight-toolworks.com  For prices and ordering instructions.

You should probably review eBay’s help pages at: <http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-aboutme.html About Me Guidelines         The eBay About Me page may be used to describe the seller’s business, and may contain Web addresses or links to the seller’s individual Web site. It may not specifically promote off eBay sales or sales of items prohibited on eBay, nor may it contain links to commercial Web sites where goods from multiple sellers are aggregated by a common search engine. Note:     * The above provides a summary of our links policy.     * If you have questions about this policy, view the links policy frequently asked questions. <http://pages.ebay.com/help/community/png-adsfaq2.html Frequently Asked Questions on eBay’s Links Policy     * What is the actual policy change?     * Why is eBay limiting links from the View Item page?     * How does eBay define a link?     * May I still link to my web site or Home page from the View Item page?     * What if my Home page contains a further description of the item?     * What links may I have on my View Item page?     * What links may I have on my About Me page?     * Will the international policy be changed as well?     * Why are we allowing companies and individuals to link to listings under their other User IDs from the View Item page but not allowing groups of eBay members to do the same? What is the actual policy change? We will begin enforcing our current User Agreement policy (section 5.1) that only allows listings to contain "…text descriptions, graphics, pictures and other content relevant to the sale of that item." We will expand the policy to prohibit links to web sites, Home pages or any page that has items for sale outside of eBay. We have relaxed the About Me links policy to allow such links. Why is eBay limiting links from the View Item page? The View Item page is designed for the description of a specific item, not for general business advertisements. Allowing links to sites off eBay is detrimental to sellers that are listing only on eBay and counting on that traffic. The purpose of the change is to focus on the intent of our View Item page policy, which is to describe an individual item, not a seller’s business or other items. How does eBay define a link? A link is any mechanism used to take you off the eBay site, whether static or clickable. This applies to any format used for a link that includes, but is not limited to, text, images, logos or icons. May I still link to my web site or Home page from the View Item page? Under this policy you may not link to your Home page or web site. What if my Home page contains a further description of the item? Unless the Home page is only a further description of the item listed, no link will be allowed. Further, per the section 5.1 of the User Agreement, the item description must be contained in the View Item Page. What links may I have on my View Item page? You may have one link to a page that further describes the item being sold in that listing, links to your eBay or Half.com listings, one link to your About Me page (in addition to the About Me icon already provided by eBay) and links that provide credits to third parties. What links may I have on my About Me page? The About Me policy will allow users to link to your own web store. However, you may not directly offer any non-eBay merchandise on the About Me page itself. Will the international policy be changed as well? The policy for linking off the View Item page will apply to all eBay sites, except eBay Real Estate. Why are we allowing companies and individuals to link to listings under their other User IDs from the View Item page but not allowing groups of eBay members to do the same? The Links policy states that you may include "Links to your eBay (including your eBay Store) or Half.com listings". Listings that are connected to either the same person or corporation are considered "your" listings as they belong to the same entity. Listings that belong to various eBay members are not "your" listings and therefore are not considered permissible links under this policy. <http://pages.ebay.com/help/policies/listing-links.html Links Policy Adding Links to Item Listings eBay allows sellers to place the following types of links in your item’s description (see the Links Frequently Asked Questions for the definition of a link):     * One link to a page that further describes the item being sold in that listing     * One link to your email address that opens an email client for potential buyers to ask questions about the item in that listing     * Links to photos of the item for sale     * Links to your eBay (including your eBay Store) or Half.com listings     * Links to your About Me page (in addition to the About Me icon already provided by eBay)     * Links that provide credits to third parties     * One link to your listing terms and conditions (providing that the most relevant information is within the listing itself and that this page does not include any links off of eBay) If you have a logo for any of these links, it may be no greater than 88×33 pixels and it may not flash or otherwise move. (The exception to this guideline is links to your eBay or Half.com listings). Linking to Web sites that offer to trade, sell, or purchase goods or services, or including links for any purpose other than those listed above is not allowed. Prohibited links include, but are not limited to:     * Links to Web pages that offer to trade, sell or purchase goods or services outside of eBay. This applies whether it is a static URL or an active link     * Links to Web sites or pages offering merchandise not permitted on eBay     * Links to sites that solicit eBay User IDs or passwords from buyers     * Links that encourage buyers to place their eBay bids through a site other than eBay Further explanation: When linking to a page that further describes the item you are selling, that page may contain links to other pages that offer items for sale outside of eBay. This is permitted, provided the intent of the link is to further describe your item and the link conforms to the policy above. Your email address may be a link that opens an email client or Web form (no links are permitted off of the Web form) for potential bidders to ask questions about the item in that listing. Please note that the link may only be used to enable an email client or Web form. It may not take you to another Web page or promote other items that you may have for sale outside of eBay. You may include links to photos of the item for sale. The photo pages may also contain discrete links to other pages that offer items for sale outside of eBay, but may not contain descriptions of or links to individual items on other sites. You may also link to a page where information relating to your eBay or Half.com items is grouped in a picture gallery or similar format so long as the page otherwise complies with these policies. This gallery page may also contain discrete links to other pages that offer items for sale outside of eBay, but may not contain descriptions of or links to individual items on other sites. You may include links to your About Me page in your listings. Theses links are in addition to the About Me icon provided in your eBay listing by eBay. However you may not include language within those links that promote items or other Web sites. You may place a third party credit or a counter in your listing. You may also link to organizations such as the Better Business Bureau or Square Trade, provided the seller is a member of the organization and it is relevant to their business or the item being sold. All of these links must comply with our third party credit policy below. You may provide one link to further outline the terms and conditions of your listing. This page may not include any links off of eBay. However, you must include the relevant portions of the terms and conditions on the listing page itself and not just on a page that you link to. Those include:     * Shipping information (you may link to a shipping calculator )     * Payment types accepted     * Terms of payment – when payment is expected     * Handling charges     * Any taxes that may apply     * If you have a logo for any of the above links, it may be no greater than 88×33 pixels and it may not flash or otherwise move. If you wish to place a third party credit or a counter in your listing, it must comply with our third party credit policy below. Listings that do not meet eBay’s policy on links may be ended. Repeated violations of the policy may result in suspension from eBay. Links from your About Me Page You may link to your own Web store or Web site. However, you may not directly offer any non-eBay merchandise on the About Me page itself. eBay does not permit its users to place the following types of links on your About Me pages:     * Links that directly offer any non-eBay listing or merchandise on the About Me page itself.     * Links to other online trading sites or pages, including auctions and fixed-price formats. Learn more     * Links to sites offering the same merchandise for the same or lower price (including the Buy It Now price).     * Links to sites offering merchandise or information not permitted on eBay On your About Me page, you may link to your own Web site or individual Internet store where you are offering to trade, sell or … read more »

A legit way to link to your site is from your eBay About-Me page. And you can link to the A-M page in any auction. This is only a minor reason why you need an A-M page. — Regards,                           PO Box 248 Bob Niland                         Enterprise which, due to spam, is:            67441-0248 USA email4rjn AT yahoo DOT com http://www.access-one.com/rjn Unless otherwise specifically stated, expressing personal opinions and NOT speaking for any employer, client or Internet Service Provider.

Very clever.  This seller has apparently found a way to get around eBay’s linking policies.  All their auctions have links to their large online store.   They apparently get away with this due to the way they include it:  i.e. "Return policies from www.goodmans.net apply to all our eBay transactions." http://cgi6.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewSellersOtherItems&userid=ww… Comments?  Is this a way we can all link to our sites? andrew

Simply use a link that provides tutorial support or otherwise enhances info on what is being offered. — Many thanks, Don Lancaster Synergetics   3860 West First Street  Box 809  Thatcher, AZ 85552 Please visit my GURU’s LAIR web site at http://www.tinaja.com
