to prepackage or not to prepackage

Question:

Hi guys was just wondering if any of your prepackage your items once you know the winning bidders and if it helps to get your items out quicker.  I.E does it make it easier.  I have recently started school up again (last week 18 credits, plus am working at school 19 hours) and I don’t want to stop my ebaying but am looking for a way to make it a little less hectic for me when payments arrive.  It hink this would be a good way.

I usta prepackage.  But then as my volume increased (mostly direct, not eBay sales), it got to be too much effort.  And it drove me nutz to have to unpack things to add them to other boxes, etc. These days I spend an hour or two now and then packing stuff.  I start at the top of my "ship soon" folder and keep going until I hit something that hasn’t cleared yet. – Dan. — – South Jersey, USA, Earth  <http://www.crosswinds.net/~darmok – Billions of people walking around – like Happy Meals with legs.

Ah okay thanks, makes sense.  Doesn’t it tend to make the shipping mor ethough that way? Elke

That has not been a problem since i wieght the package and determine the shipping charges before i email the buyer with total. I did have some buyers comment that they were happy to have thier items packed in smaller boxes within a larger box, they say that it prevents the items from getting damaged in transit because they don’t bang against each other when being handled in transit. I package, but leave the box open.  When I get paid I print a copy of the auction page and include it with my "thanks" note.   — L.V.X., frater mus work – http://www.mousetrap.net/ngs/ cgi, database backends play – http://www.mousetrap.net/~mouse/ the Great Work, Honda Civic wagon and Spree scooter, eBay FAQ, guitar, ferret

I’ve sold quite a few obscure books there for what they’re worth. I sell lots of different kinds of items (still trying to find my eBay identity), so it is always possible that a single bidder may win more than one auction, necessitating the unpackaging of a pre-packaged item to consolidate their two eBay wins.  I now pre-bubblewrap instead.  In other words I pre-wrap everything with bubblewrap and when auctions end, I either final pack the single item in a box or consolidate the multiple items in a single box. Its also a way to make productive use of my time watching TV. Hope this idea helps! I prepackage as I get bids through the week, when I don’t have checks to process or other items to list.  Then when the auction is over, I write up an address label and stick it on. When the money comes, I only have to pick up the box and move it to the "out" spot. Angie — ‘Tis better to have loved a sloth than to have never loved at all." (Win Ben Stein’s Money, 2000)

Funny how everybody has a different "system", isn’t it?  Whatever works…..I keep all my sold items on a shelf, when I receive payment, I package it and put it in the pile to take to the post office.  I don’t go every single day, some weeks I go every day, some weeks every other day.  Of course, I don’t have as much volume as I’d like to.  One of these days! Most of the time this wouldn’t be a bad idea, but a couple of times some guy has won another item which has to be put into a larger envelope!

I used to prepackage until my number of deadbeats increased. Now I just staple the address lable to my CC of my AR notice and then pack when I actually receive the money. Kimberly

As all the repsonses indicate, there are many approaches that can work well, depending on your merchandise and the nature of your audience (multiple wins, etc.) One as yet unmentioned factor in your organization is the actual physical space you have to work with.  Are your items small enough that you can conveniently place all your current auction items in a box/closet? If you can organize boxes (USPS Priority boxes come neatly packaged in flat boxes of 25 or so!) handily, have an easily accessible place to leave packing materials (newspaper, peanuts, whatever you use), and the necessary tools (scissors, tape rolls, stamps), you can probably afford to pacjkage things as items roll in. …but if you have to unload a whole closetfull of stuff everytime you want to package a single box, you might want to prepackage a bunch of parcels all at once. albert

Response:

Hi, We package items as soon as they get a bid.  Very rarely do we have people buy more than one item, and rarer still are the times we leave a reserve. Since we both have full time jobs, Ebay is a side-line for us, so we only run about 15 items a week.  Once a bid is placed, the item moves from the shelf of "this weeks stuff" and onto the wrapped and ready to ship shelf. Once payment is received, the package is shipped same or next day.  We are fortunate to live close to several grocery store postal outlets and can do it to or from work.  I have found customers really appreciate this quick shipping.  And, it keeps our life a little less cluttered.  We also make email folders for each individual sale with all correspondence in it.  Those folders are either in our: selling, payment pending or completed main folders.  We can tell at a glance who we are waiting on for payment. I put stuff into the "mail it" pile when the winning bidder has confirmed their address. I put the auction#, address, date and cost on a tag. When the check arrives, I note the date of payment and the date to ship. I may or may not package at that point. I may wait until I know I have a bunch of stuff to go out and do them all up at once. Every time Ive tried prepackaging, someone always emails me a question that requires me to look at the item again..

Response:

I package everything before I even post it on ebay, so I can get an exact estimate of weight, sometimes even a bit extra tape can bump you into the next weight bracket. Anyway, i used to seal the packages ahead of time, but during the course of the auction, people inevitably asked me something about it so I had to re-open everything. So now what I do is, I put everything in the box, but just leave the top open untill its ready to go. As soon as I get payment, I slap the labels and postage on and "Poof!"

Once I get a response back with an address, I prepackage if I have the time.  (If I have to make time to do it, I might as well make time when the check arrives.)   Richard Ward – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Hi guys was just wondering if any of your prepackage your items once you know the winning bidders and if it helps to get your items out quicker.  I.E does it make it easier.  I have recently started school up again (last week 18 credits, plus am working at school 19 hours) and I don’t want to stop my ebaying but am looking for a way to make it a little less hectic for me when payments arrive.  It hink this would be a good way. I have a number of bidders buy multiple items to save on shipping costs, so if I prepackaged everything, I’d be unpacking and wasting shipping materials. Richard Ward – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – <snip Elke I usually pack up items for shipping as soon as i list them, i like to have them ready for buyers that pay with paypal or postal money orders. Not only am I dealing with that, but I work in the computer lab at school (work study) for another 19 hours a week, I am married, and have a four year old son.  My husband works swing shift (2:30-11) so I take dinner to him at work so we can all see each other and have dinner together as a family every night.  I have to deal with the commute here while not far (6 miles) takes a long time (35-40 min to go that far, sometimes longer), but yet I am perfectly happy dealing with all this.  Sides this is my last year and then I can deal with the "real" world. Hi Elke, Since everyone else has gone to bed & I’m sitting up with a sudden summer cold & can’t sleep anyway, FWIW…. While I don’t run nearly as many auctions as a lot of the folks, I still have to get organized or I’ll slip up, so I like to make out a shipping label as soon as the buyer emails an address & write an abbreviated item name on the label’s back (most of my stuff goes out in Priority boxes).  Then as soon as I get it together, I pack the item, leaving it open & put the label on top of the peanuts, bubblewrap or whatever.  If the deal falls through, the only thing wasted is a free Priority mail label. As soon as the payment arrives in whatever form, I put a note in the box, tape it up, apply the label, ship it, post feedback & email the buyer.  At least, that is what I try to do.  Sometimes things intervene or circumstances dictate another route, but not often. This sounds like I’m an organized type of person, but I’m really not, which is why I have to try to follow a system that expedites the details as quickly as possible.  I try to refuse personal checks for the same reason; I need to sell it, ship it and be done with it lest I screw up, & having to sit on a check for a couple of weeks just doesn’t gee & haw with my nature. So, yes I think pre-packing is a good approach & thank God I’m not trying to cope with 18 semester hours.  The old day job is quite enough. Regards, Rod
