Hi, Fred, If the owner had to "blame" you for his cheapness in his computer and software, you made the right decision to get out of there. So glad this didn’t trigger any anxiety for you. Will you be pursuing a new job? Glad your other businesses are taking off. smiles, Elise

Fred, I hope you feel better soon. It’s good it’s volunteer, so you do have the choice of showing up or not – it’s a good choice. I agree with Vanessa.. sometimes if you overdo physically one day, you need a day to recuperate. Maybe you could volunteer and do something less strenuous physically.. And too.. we have good days and we have bad days – and neither one lasts forever. It cycles, so just know if you have a bad day, it won’t last. You’ll have another good one. Have faith. Sally — The charter is available at: http://readystump.algebra.com/~asapm

I want to trade it in for/toward a VOX AC30 CC1 or 2 that goes for 999.00 . I am curious about how much should I expect my trade in value to be? Thanks!

You might have a tough time getting anyone to admit it. My experience with GC tells me that they go for minimum Blue Book wholesale, which is about 60% of retail. If your amp would sell for $500 on the street (this is just an example) then GC would try to calculate your trade-in at about $300. You’re usually better off selling it yourself, depending on how you calculate the amount of brain damage involved in managing it. Chuck

Not me, but you can always look up stuff on Ebay to get an idea: http://search.ebay.com/mesa-Boogie-F-50_W0QQfromZR40QQsatitleZmesaQ20… Those represent an approximation of what you could expect to sell it for to another guitar player. Expect less when trading in as GC (or any other retailer) is going to want to make a profit when they sell it to someone else.

I’d guess you should expect as much as 40% less than that when trading it in, assuming you have a good price on the item you’re buying. Don

I don’t work for any store, but assessing values I always go by these rules: 1 – ‘normal’ used gear is at best about 70% of its original value 2 – stores will offer you 10-20% less the street value you’d get by selling it yourself 3 – if you need to ditch the gear quick, you never get the 70% value for ‘em anyway

I don’t work at a music store, but I asked the store manager at MusicGoRound for an approximation of what I could get for something. His explanation was that they price things by what they think they can get for them on ebay. And they’ll give you about 1/2 that much. That’s probably very similar to what GC. Just because GC pretends to sell things for insane high prices on ebay, doesn’t mean you’ll get 1/2 that amount. Pete

I don’t work at GC. But a caution about your plans. It is always best to work your best cash deal BEFORE mentioning any trade in. Otherwise, they may THINK that they are giving you more for your used item, but it’s really just some of the pad on the price that they would’ve come down on if offered cash. A retail store will never give you true full value on a trade in (it may SEEM that way, but see the above). They have to factor in the time it’ll take to sell the item, the room it takes up on the floor displacing other items for sale, etc. My suggestion is sell it yourself, then work a cash deal. And even if it’s the "lowest price guarantee" nonsense, offer LESS. Most items can be had for less than GC’s "sales prices," IF you bargain with them.

Some dealers play the "what you paid for it against LIST PRICE" game. AVOID that like the clap. Dealer cost is often 50% off LIST price. ..or less. And the longer it’s on the floor against the current issue of GP/etc, against how bad the dealer wants what you got, bad sales, how bad YOU want it, can he sell a service plan?
Yes, $$ talks, and you 99% of the time U get more selling it your self. If ya must trade, get a cash price 1st. THEN the dealer will have to explain WHY the trade price he has to give you now sucks. It’s so easy to ’sweat out’ those GC ’salespeople’. They drop like flys.
If your not an eBay’r, I’d try the Craigslist in your city to sell your Mesa. You’ll get MUCH more than trading at GC. If that applies; http://www.craigslist.org I sold a Mesa Lonestar special to a local buyer for just a bit less than I paid for it. He showed up and paid in green dollars and took it away. Both happy. I did the same with a Nomad head. All good. Some cautions though if you live in a metro area IE: San Francisco, CA., Seattle, etc… There have been some bad action with craigslist sales, not too much with the music categories from what I remember. Check out the website for details. Although when I was in the SF Bay Area I sold a ton of gear on craigslist without one problem. Good text, good pics does the deal, just like eBay. regards – DJ

Hello, I’m Jean. I’ve been subscribing to this group for a while and really enjoying the shop talk. I wonder if I could get some feedback. If Kay was to come out with a vintage reissue, what would you like to see most? guitar? bass? Everyone knows the Barney Kessel Jbox but how about the thin twin or the Pro Bass?(My personal fav) Kay has stayed quiet but certainly has not gone away, the current website does not offer a whole lot information on it’s heritage but soon that will change. www.kayguitar.com Check that in a month or so. For now here are several sites that I have found more insightful than others, Soon you will be able to find it all in one place. www.provide.net/~cfh/other.html (May already be in your favorites) http://kaybass.com/ http://search.harmony-central.com/search?q=kay+guitar&btnG=Harmony+Ce… http://froogle.google.com/froogle?q=ebay+kay+guitar&hl=en&lr=&rls=SUN… Last but not least http://search.ebay.com/kay-guitar I would like to conduct a web gallery of Vintage Kay Instruments with tribute to their owners, they will either be posted on the official Kay Website or www.guitarface.net (Still under construction) Anyway, about the reissue. Please give your feedback.

Kay is dead. Doubt it? Call toll free 800-211-3319. It’s a U.S. marketing cover for cheap Chinese line sold to dealers at prices like "Assorted six pack" (Guitars) for $69.99.

I used to have a webpage bookmarked for company who sold "vintage" speakers. The prices, even for speakers without much demand for them was just nuts though. I guess they did business with people obsessed with restoring amps. It’s kind of cool that your’s has tiltback legs, but I kind of doubt that it’s worth enough to make it worth spending a lot of money restoring it, and finding the correct speaker. Check Ebay finished auctions though. IMO, cabinets like that are too heavy to be worth what it’d cost to safely ship them. You might even have better luck selling the Oxford speaker, and the empty cabinet separately. Pete — So… your corndog has radar. I knew that. But what would it want… with radar? –Mouse "Fitz" Fitzgerald

We always follow up payment with a notice it’s been received / when the item is being shipped. Seems to be just proper follow up by the seller. If nothing else, it probably minimizes after-sale requests by the buyer following up on delivery dates, etc, which are much more time consuming. On the other hand, I do get many follow-ups thanking me for that information. Makes me wonder if most don’t do such. Most, although not all the seller’s I’ve dealt with, have had some type of follow up. Then again, I try to avoid "big-time" PSs and/or those with reduced feedback ratings (<99.8%), so I’m probably biased toward most likely to provide such courtesy.

"Best practice" is compliance is eBay policies, which state that buyer/seller have "three business days" to make contact. Your question about "slap some negative feedback on this seller already", though, puts you so far under the bridge that we might let timmudman out of our killfiles. Kris

Unless he promised you some acknowledgement and shipping notice, he doesn’t owe you any. If you "slap some negative feedback on this seller" then you can expect the same in return. I want my sellers shipping my order, not sending me emails. If I don’t get my stuff in 14 days, then I file an item-not-received complaint with eBay. Invariably, my stuff has arrived shortly thereafter.

A PayPal Visa? You "may" be out of luck. Is it drawn on a National bank with just the PayPal name on it? When I have done charge backs there was no form to be mailed or filled out. I just called them told them what was going on, they looked it up, said no problem. After that the only thing I got in the mail was a confirmation that the charge had been permanently removed. and thanking me for me business bla bla bla. — 25% graduate functional illiterates. This is my thought as well. I didn’t respond because I have suspicions of being chummed since nobody uses or should use a PayPal Visa card. The mailed forms aren’t out of the ordinary and my bank does use them as well.
Ok I guess it just depends on the bank. Does anyone know if the PP CC is drawn on some bank? I have got many of their spam offers to get one, but never paid any attention to them. The last charge back I had to do was with Discover. I was getting fed up with McAfee and decided to try Norton. The company that makes it (Syn something?) had a download for it, I tried, something went wrong, probably my fault, most kids in Jr High know more about a computer than I do, but it would not work, would not let me download again, but did charge my card. After much searching the only phone # I could find was a place you had to pay by the min. to talk to them. While I was on the phone to Discover telling them I wanted to reverse the charge the operator gave me a free (800) # for them. While he was doing his thing I dialed it, got a recording that it was no longer in service to try to reach them on line. I told him this and asked him if he wanted to hear it, he laughed and said no. I never did hear from Norton, but Discover reversed the charge. — "Everything in excess!
A PayPal Visa? You "may" be out of luck. Is it drawn on a National bank with just the PayPal name on it? PayPal’s Visa debit card is issued by 1st Bank. Its Master Card credit card comes from Providian Natl. Bank.

That would be scary if they are still anything like they (Providian) was years ago. Friend of mine had one of their cards. Twice when I was with him and he tried to buy something his card was declined. I asked him "do you have it maxed"? He said he had a 0 balance. Both times when he called them to ask what was up, the answer was "our computers are down so the charges will not go through". He gave up on them the second time. Maybe by now they have upgraded and no longer use old 486’s they got at the Good Will. — "Everything in excess! To enjoy the flavor of life, take big bites. Moderation is for monks." [Lazarus Long]

I’m killing some retirement time playing in the Craiglist Self Employment forum. There is an endless quest from posters in search of money-making opportunities using their time and talent as web designers, sewing machine operators, CAD drafting, writers, jewelry makers, tool designers (me)…. mostly work at home. I keep thinking that some of these activities could be solutions to others out there in the world, and that eBay marketers could see the connections and make the matches and collect a fee for the services rendered. The key factor here is that these CAD designers are CAD designers and don’t have a clue as to how to sell their services. Same for candle makers, resume writers, sail car builders and the like. You folks on eBay know how to sell. Could there be a connect here? Anybody?

Actually we don’t. If we did we wouldn’t be putting up with the dirt level margins and fighting it out with other eBay sellers. There is a lot more to sales than a description in an ad. Having no conscience helps a lot. eBay is a great place for introverts. Sales is a great place for extroverts. Extroverts get to own Ferraris and stuff.

None of these folks has yet noticed that eBay is a venue for selling products, not services? Perhaps you could point them toward the classified ads of their local newspapers? — Ty Who is mostly just a slightly skewed Donna Reed Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities. ~~Voltaire, 1767
