2nd RFD: misc.business.online-auctions. discuss

Question:

REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)        unmoderated group misc.business.online-auctions.discuss This is a formal Request For Discussion (RFD) for the creation of a world-wide unmoderated Usenet newsgroup misc.business.online-auctions. discuss. Discussion and follow-up should take place in news.groups. This is not a Call for Votes (CFV); you cannot vote at this time. Procedural details are below. CHANGES from previous RFD: The charter has been updated as follows: — removed repetitive statements regarding binaries — made allowances for certain small binaries (such as PGP) — softened the overall tone, which was somewhat strict Newsgroup line: misc.business.online-auctions.discuss   Discussion of online auctions&services. RATIONALE: misc.business.online-auctions.discuss There are literally millions of online auctions running daily. Discussion of these auctions and the services that provide them has been shown to be desirable in the current alt.* Usenet group devoted to the subject. However, this group is not sufficient; though it now receives 200-250 posts per day and has a good signal to noise ratio, it suffers from lack of propagation. This is due in part to rmgroup messages sent shortly after its creation, reasons for which include that the group does "not meet current standards for alt group creation". Public web-based message boards for this subject do exist but finding freedom of expression in such forums is difficult at best. These sites are most often owned and operated by commercial auction-related companies, who discourage any mention of their competition. Permission to post or even discuss this RFD was denied by the board of one major auction company. Discussion in the aforementioned alt.* group suggests that a move to the Big 8, to increase availability and lessen such restrictions, would be useful and welcome. CHARTER: misc.business.online-auctions.discuss The newsgroup will be open to the discussion of all topics directly related to online auctioning, such as: -general information about auction methods -seller/buyer tips and advice -online payment services -delivery & packaging methods -auction software & services -sales policies -scam/con warnings The newsgroup will not be moderated. Commercial messages are inappropiate and unwelcome in this group. This includes, but is not limited to, pointers to personal online auctions and/or web sites with the intent to increase bidding. Unwelcome commercial messages also include posts that attempt to garner business for auctions services, payment services, and related companies. Articles should be posted in plain text. Also inappropiate in this newsgroup are excessively crossposted or multiply posted messages (aka "spam"), as well as binaries (e.g. pictures, compressed files, etc.), except for cryptographic signatures (e.g. PGP). Those using misc.business.online-auctions.discuss are asked to keep their messages on-topic and of interest to the majority of the people reading the newsgroup. Flaming and blatantly offensive language are discouraged in this group. END CHARTER. PROCEDURE: This is a request for discussion, not a call for votes. In this phase of the process, any potential problems with the proposed newsgroups should be raised and resolved. The discussion period will continue for a minimum of 21 days (starting from when the first RFD for this proposal is posted to news.announce.newgroups), after which a Call For Votes (CFV) may be posted by a neutral vote taker if the discussion warrants it. Please do not attempt to vote until this happens. All discussion of this proposal should be posted to news.groups. This RFD attempts to comply fully with the Usenet newsgroup creation guidelines outlined in "How to Create a New Usenet Newsgroup" and "How to Format and Submit a New Group Proposal".  Please refer to these documents (available in news.announce.newgroups) if you have any questions about the process. DISTRIBUTION: news.groups news.announce.newgroups alt.marketing.online.ebay rec.collecting.coins rec.antiques auctionsecrets-subscribe [at] egroups.com List is for online auction sellers. Response:

Hey, JJ!…. That "unmoderated" sentence is redundant, given the second line of your RFD. Just get rid of it.

Do NOT remove that line for that reason.  As you may already know, JJ, the charter is a permanent record for the news group.  The RFD may disappear, but the charter won’t, hence that line being in the charter is in fact NOT redundant. ru

Hey, JJ!…. That "unmoderated" sentence is redundant, given the second line of your RFD. Just get rid of it. The r.a.balloon guy…. finally back in the world. Looks like you’re doing a great job! Bruce – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –                     REQUEST FOR DISCUSSION (RFD)       unmoderated group misc.business.online-auctions.discuss CHARTER: misc.business.online-auctions.discuss The newsgroup will be open to the discussion of all topics directly related to online auctioning, such as: -general information about auction methods -seller/buyer tips and advice -online payment services -delivery & packaging methods -auction software & services -sales policies -scam/con warnings The newsgroup will not be moderated. I think the above sentence should not be with the paragraph below.   I think it would be better be placed or merged with the first sentence of the the Charter, e.g.  "This news group is unmoderated and will be open to…"  You want to make the paragraph below only about what is inappropriate to the group, and not mix in the moderation status.  That is, the first sentence should be "Commercial messages are inappropriate…", as I have left it below. I’ll be glad to make that change, Ru, but I’m wondering — will this necessitate a 3rd RFD? I’m still a little fuzzy on that part of the process…

Me, too.  Personally, I don’t see this as a big enough change to warrant a 3rd RFD.  Basically, nothing has been added or removed, no meaning has really changed, and only a small focus problem on one paragraph has been changed.  Something else might come up that will make the issue moot.  Wait a couple days before sweating about it.  I’d also worry about if the earliest possible CFV posting (mid-Dec) is a liability for you, and that perhaps taking a little more time so that the CFV gets posted mid-Jan would be a better approach. ru
