Question:
What do you guys think is a better approach for selling/marketing items — an eBay store or stand-alone e-commerce web site with shopping cart? I am hoping to hear from some of you folks out there who have eBay stores, to hear your likes and dislikes. Is it worth it? I don’t know who on earth would get an Anchor store though, as that is really expensive. I am getting interested in setting up a store, but the one thing which struck me right away about eBay stores is that they kind of all look alike. Maybe I haven’t seen any "good ones". Thoughts/comments. Thanks. — spanky

Both. It’s not a dichotomous situation. But careful attention must be paid to the eBay inter-linking and self-competition issues. — http://www.access-one.com/rjn email4rjn AT yahoo DOT com NOT speaking for any employer, client or Internet Service Provider.

What fantasy land you you live in. Compare to a bricks and mortar store – $50,000 minimum store fitout – Lease/rent at least $1000 a month and probably much more – staff costs starting $1,000 per week gtoomey

And just what planet were you on when you posted? The OP says nothing at all about a bricks and mortar store. Pass the bong. Give me a hit off that sucker.

I’m in the same boat, Spanky, I clearly need a store and I also am clearly on a tight budget. Which one to use? I am trying a stand-alone site that will submit eBay listings and accepts Paypal, and also will submit your store inventory to Froogle for you, which I like very much. It’s through turbosales.com and they charge $9.95/mo. (that’s the bare-bones minimum, a 20-product store). I have not advertised it except on Froogle and haven’t really gotten started with it, but thought I’d suggest it. I may dump it for an eBay store, though, it’s more expensive but you can’t beat eBay traffic. I won’t tease you, it’s hard enough to get through life with a name like Spanky. I should know. Best, Astrid

In the sewing group that I frequent, a professional sewer recently posted that she thinks they make the item merely look mass produced. (Actually,K’Mart was the word she used, I believe.) A

Thanks for the info Astrid. The reason I likes the eBay store is because I am already familiar with the tools and processes, and I like the way you can set up a store quick and easy. The 15.95 a month store subscription is relatively inexpensive too. The only thing that kind of bugs me is how the stores generally all look alike. Maybe I have only looked at a bad selection of stores and wasn’t impressed, but I hope there is more ways. The thing which gives it too much of a "stock" look is the eBay frame along the top, with the links pointing back to Sell/Buy/My eBay, etc. In my opinion, the look of this stock site is too restrictive and the eBay frame/links along the top tend to give alot of focus there.
I know what you mean, I find the ebay store interface to be clunky and difficult to ‘personalize’. I have only had the cheapo version, though, maybe there are more tools at the higher subscriptions. I like this guy’s storefront, for instance: http://stores.ebay.com/Liquid-Art I think he has a store above the $15.99 month rate. The categories function has been difficult to integrate with Turbolister, as well. It’s frustrating. Then again, I’m no technological wiz. Astrid

Uuuhh.. ok dude.. let’s not over analyse this. What I meant by the fact that Anchor Stores are expensive, is that if you look at the basic pricing of 15.95, the next one up is 49.95, and then the Anchor Store is $499! At 10x the cost of the preceeding subscription rate, its quite a jump (see http://pages.ebay.com/storefronts/Subscriptions.html). If you are CEO of Microsoft or Sears, you aren’t going to run an "anchor store" solution, so the person who originally responded by telling me I was in fantasy land obviously thinks I was comparing an anchor store to a Sears operation, but that’s was HIS assessment, which was incorrect. — spanky
