Question:
Unless you are a heavy shipper, I would advise against the thermal printer. I would take too long to recoup the cost. You print out the shipping labels on any inkjet/laser printer and get the plastic sleeves for the label free from UPS. Except for extremely heavy shippers, I would advise you to spend the money on a used/refurbed laser printer which you can also use for other printing. James Keith jkeithjratbellsouthdotnet I guess I could do that. I would feel more comfortable actually handing the package to a driver though. Another question I have is where can I get one of those thermal printers for printing out lablels?

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I have a daily UPS account. The UPS driver comes and picks up everyday. I use UPS software and print on a laser printer. I pay $15.00 a week if I ship nothing. The $15.00 is prorated down if I ship stuff. I pay about $3.00-$8.00 a week after adjustments. I ship 3-10 packages a week and I pay a lower rate than if I take it to the UPS counter. For instance I just went to UPS.com and did a rate comparison. This is for a 10lb package shipped to a residential address in Texas (I’m in CA). My daily pickup account is $7.67. Dropping it off at UPS would be $10.33. It would be about $18.00 at the local shipping place. I save much more than the $3.00-$8.00 a week the Dailey account costs and UPS comes and gets the packages from my porch between 4 & 5PM every week day. Jim…… I was just figuring out the margins that my local pack and ship place charges and found out that they are charging up to 80% above and beyond what the actual cost of shipping UPS ground would be. For example. I sent a 2 lb package via UPS ground. If I had dealt with UPS directly it would have cost me $4.26. My shipper charged me $7.95. Where it gets really expensive is with heavy items. I sent a package weighing 17 lbs, and it cost me $34.12, and if I had dealt with UPS directly it would have cost me $17.54. I think I will start going to the UPS center directly on the heavier stuff. Wondering what some of you do regarding shipping. I am going to start looking into priority mail for some of my stuff.
Dropping it off at UPS would be a lot more than $10.33. You have to include your time and vehicle amortization. — Many thanks, Don Lancaster Synergetics 3860 West First Street Box 809 Thatcher, AZ 85552 Please visit my GURU’s LAIR web site at http://www.tinaja.com

You guys are missing the best bet: FedEx Ground is almost always much cheaper than UPS. Comparing 20-lb. packages from Maryland to California: UPS: $19.75 (drop-off) or $18.45 (pickup) FedEx: $13.43 (drop-off or pickup) Even if you pay UPS for daily pickup, their rate is $14.42 – still a buck higher than FedEx. I’ve found FedEx ground service incredibly reliable, and use it to ship everything over two pounds (USPS shines in the featherweight category). – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I was just figuring out the margins that my local pack and ship place charges and found out that they are charging up to 80% above and beyond what the actual cost of shipping UPS ground would be. I haven’t checked out FedEx in years. I didn’t know they had a "ground" service. Last I talked to them they had overnight and 3-day. I’ll look in to it. Jim…..

At Christmas I took an expensive and hard-to-pack gift to my local Mailboxes, Etc to let them to the dirty work of packing and shipping. They wanted $104 for pack and ship a 9 pound picture. I bought a box from them instead (at an inflated price of $14, but I didn’t have time to find the perfect box). I packed it myself, with bubble wrap, peanuts and cardboard. USPS charged me $17.80 including insurance to ship. Needless to say, I won’t be going back to Mailboxes Etc. soon. — Maiasaura Books & The Dog Collector at http://www.maiasaura.com/ Bat Boy Lives! The UPS labels print on a laser printer. You may be thinking of the VISA MC printer, which they give you.
Actually not. When you go to print a label from their website there is an option to print to a UPS 2442 thermal printer. You can print shipping labels as well as receipts.

THe only problem I would have is a drop off location. Looks like all the authorized locations are MBE type places. Can’t imagine they would let me drop off a package there without paying for it through them, or would they? The USPS is a better deal up to about eight pounds. I probably would not even deal with UPS except that we can ship it from my husband’s work. Angie What is wrong with dumping the stuff in your front yard and letting UPS pick it up?

The UPS labels print on a laser printer. You may be thinking of the VISA MC printer, which they give you. The driver is supposed to have you actually hand the package to him. It is avoidable by the use of flags. — Many thanks, Don Lancaster Synergetics 3860 West First Street Box 809 Thatcher, AZ 85552 Please visit my GURU’s LAIR web site at http://www.tinaja.com

Thanks Deb!! I’ve said this over and over and over and still hear about folks paying a fortune at a UPS shipping counter or driving all over the county to ship their UPS packages! I never leave the house to ship UPS–And you do not need a charge card. Call a day ahead with your package dimensions and weight for the total due and attach a personal check to your package(s) (assuming your front porch is safe–if you are home, you can just hand it to them when they get there). The high-priced neighborhood shippers would be out of business in no time if folks would catch on to this. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Newsgroups: alt.marketing.online.ebay (snip) Look in your phone book for UPS. Call the 800 # and arrange for pick up at your location. You can prepay with a credit card over the phone, set the package on your porch the next morning (assuming you are in a location that it will stay on the porch till pickup) and they will pick it up the next day. They leave the little shipping label copy with the tracking number. If you take a package to a UPS counter they charge an extra fee to handle it over the counter. Pick up at your location is no extra charge. Just wrap the package, know the dimensions and weight and you are good to go. deb

On the UPS Site Location page, there’s usually one of the sites that is the Customer Counter for your area. The people ARE really nice and helpful, as is ALL of the UPS staff. Check out their web site and if you don’t have an account, set one up. Supplies are free, and if you ship a lot of LARGE packages, be sure to call them at the 800 number and request their measuring chain. If you pay the shipping fees online and print a label, you can hand the package to ANY UPS driver that you see running around. They take them, no questions, no problems. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I checked out the UPS site and printing lablels from there. THe only problem I would have is a drop off location. Our local shipper adds a couple of dollars a package to the UPS shipping cost also. If I have two or more packages I just drive to the UPS counter dropoff. They’re alot nicer there too. Jeff — Jeff & Lori DeVore Country Woodcrafts http://cwoodcrafts.com
