Question:
- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Question = WHY? Does it help with sales? Do people really want to see what their sellers look like and whether they have fluffy poodles called Samson, Delilah and Puddin’? Sarcastic as this may sound, it’s a genuine question. I kind of prefer to think of my buyers and sellers as nameless, faceless, polite, honest and pleasant nonentities. I also don’t necessarily think they need to be peering into my personal weirdnesses. What’s up with that? You can use the About Me page to successfully advertise your NON-Ebay websites. You can even CHARGE others to advertise THEIR products on your About Me page. Many people will be willing to pay you. Here is an example: http://members.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&id=11196491 See all the links???

Question = WHY? Does it help with sales?
Before bidding, most people attempt to form some estimate of what kind of seller they’re about to deal with. * Is it homeless person using the public library PC? * Is it a retired marketeer with an on-going garage sale? * Is it a small business shifting excess merchandize? * Is it a fence flushing stolen goods? * Is it a front for Global Univeral Mfg. Ltd? * Is it a shifty ex-con doing drop-ship for someone else? * Is it a college kid doing eBay for her whole dorm? * Is it a professional full-time eBay’er? * Is it a scammer who just hijacked an account? A brief About-Me page can address this question, and make the bidder feel more comfortable. Without an About-Me page, the potential bidder has to form an estimate based on precious little information, and a lot of Sherlock Holmes insight. I’ve skipped bidding on A LOT of pages that just didn’t "feel" right. An About-Me page might have made the difference. Put yourself in your bidder’s shoes. Ask: what would I like to know? Ask: what would I find credible? Answer those questions, and only those questions. Consider too that sellers also check the About-Me pages of their bidders (I do). They have similar questions. A simple text page will do. Omit the bells and whistles. I find it to be an effective marketing tool as I have links to all my websites as well as providing general information like return and exchange policies, etc. I get a LOT of hits to my site from my Ebay page…I highly recommend them. They don’t have to be fancy (and I strongly suggest no music and other such silliness many people finds annoying!), but as an additional marketing tool, it can be very effective. Oh, and btw…you can even submit it to search engines

I think it’s the only chance some people have to get "on the web" and share stuff with others, so they go nuts — and probably email the link to About Me to their relatives. I have an About Me page, the world’s most boring….but I’ve had some compliments on it from bidders, who thought it told them what they really wanted to know. I even put the procedures for broken/lost shipments, which seems to have had a Karmic affect and no problems since

There are basically two camps in the auctioneers community: – Less is more. Disclose the product information, and plain, and simple, not more. – The more the merrier. Backgrounds, sounds, flashy photos, tunes, animations, flags, counters, local timers, Super sized fonts, lengthy term and contracts, disclaimers, stories, ….. you name it. I prefer the first as buyer but occasionally buy stuff on 2nd category even though it is annoying. I have developped this unusal capability cutting through the crap, and get to the product information buried deep in the ad, and make up my mind within 1-2 mins…. Not bad huh? Personal web, what personal web?
