Scammer Article: More and more online shoppers fall victim

Question:

We’ve just replaced SnugBear’s post to alt.marketing.online.ebay with new Folger’s Crystals. Let’s see if anyone notices: The one I liked best was on a folding stroller: "Remove baby before collapsing."

Isn’t there an advertising world equivalent of an Oscar, given to a product with the stupidest warning? (The ad people give these to each other, not like the Razzies at the Oscars).    "I’m not a Republican because I don’t make enough money to be that big     of an asshole."  —Paula Poundstone

Response:

I always felt the warning on the blow dryer I own not to use it in the tub was the most telling.  I’ve often wondered exactly who would be trying to use a blow dryer while taking a bath.  This one’s not even a tag, it’s permanently stamped into the side of the blow dryer.   Richard Ward – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – <snip We have oven doors with labels that say "Do Not Use As Step". In 1960, the dead voted in Chicago.  In 2000, the brain-dead voted in Florida. Nothing ever really changes. — If you’re interested in discussing possible creation of a new online auction newsgroup, please see the thread entitled "RFD: misc.business. online-auctions.discuss", currently posted in news.groups. I really liked the bumper sticker I saw the other day: "Stupidity should be painful". —   "Poodles are space aliens who think they’ve disguised    themselves as dogs."  - Paghat the Ratgirl http://www.drizzle.com/~das

– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – While waiting to hear who the next U.S. President will be, Dan Cottler Maybe I’m a hardass (bite your tongue!), but I have no pity for these scammed buyers.  None zero bupkas. Why?  Here’s a quote from the article:  "The auction seemed legitimate. It had a picture and a   detailed description of the camera. The seller said he was   from Santa Fe, N.M. There were no comments from other   buyers posted under his user ID, but that could mean the   seller was doing this for the first time."  "After the auction, Valliere got an e-mail message from the   seller, asking him to wire the money to the Ukraine." Hello!  So the seller misrepresented his location?  AND he has zero feedback????  For god’s sake — how many red flags do you need? What’s the solution to this?  I know!  Government-enforced labeling! Put a "SCHMUCK WITH MONEY" sticker on the guy’s forehead! We have oven doors with labels that say "Do Not Use As Step". We have blow dryers with labels that say "Do Not Use While Sleeping". I think maybe beware of anybody selling anything from the Ukraine or Romania or probably any other foreign country. Got enough trouble with crooks next door. John

Response:

I don’t know about any foreign country, but big ticket items from the former Soviet bloc, or from Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria or the like, would set off a world of alarms with me. Something about a scam from Ukraine involving Yahoo Auctions here’s an excerpt: ‘It appears there are others who may be out of luck, too. Online auction records indicate that Alex ran 10 auctions at the same time for high-priced digital cameras. One went for $560. The total amount of money high bidders agreed to pay for his merchandise was a little over $3,000.’ …beware of Alex’s from the Ukraine selling digital cameras on Yahoo… http://vh60009.vh6.infi.net/business/docs/auction111200.htm
