How might ebay look upon someone using an auction to give away a free electronic book? I’m thinking of running an auction for a week and providing a link to the free book in the auction. The book is totally harmless and its contents should not upset anyone. Will I get booted?
is it one of those things where they say it’s free and then charge for shipping? (like cellphone chargers running at a buy-it-now of $0.01 w/ $5.99 shipping and a user feedback score of over 100,000 ??)

Unless you are the creator (copyright holder) of the eBook, then it is against eBay’s policies to list electronically-deliverable content. This includes eBooks or links to where a user can obtain a certain product. If anyone comes across your listing(s) and reports it, eBay will cancel it and give you a slap on the wrist. If all you want is to get the book circulated, simply post it in alt.binaries.e-book or alt.binaries.e-book.technical and the whole world will have access to it, even those who dont have ebay accounts. This is free. Obviously ebay isnt going to distribute your book for free.
