Question:
Hi Ed, I had a similar experience–The seller told me the package was delivered to my small PO where I have a box . I never received it and asked the PO folks (whom I know quite well by now) whether they had it and they said not. I was out $100. worth of vintage fabric. I have no idea where it went. I don’t know what the solution is but you are not the only person this has happened to. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Path: lobby!ngtf-m01.news.aol.com!audrey04.news.aol.com!not-for-mail Lines: 37 Newsgroups: alt.marketing.online.ebay Organization: AOL http://www.aol.com Hi. I want to share my experience this week with the USPS. In December I won a one-of-a-kind custom figure from a seller that I have won many items in the past. This week, I noticed I still hadn’t received the item, so I emailed the seller. He promptly emailed me back that he had checked the Delivery Confirmation number and it showed that it was received on January 3rd. Never having received the item, I wrote down all the numbers and headed to my PO today. I asked the Postal Clerk why it says it was "delivered" when they never delivered it to me. The woman said the Delivery Confirmation means it was received at the destination Post Offce, not that it was received by the addressee. I asked what happened and she said "We probably gave it to the wrong person". I asked if they were going to be responible for it since it was obviously their mistake, and she said "No," and even if insurance was purchased it would not be covered because the computer shows it as "received". I have a PO Box. I get probably 10 packages a month from eBay coming to me. Sometimes when a package doesn;t fit in my box, theyhave a key in it that corresponds to a larger box in the lobby. You put your key in it, take out your package and the key stays in the door. A couple weeks back I had a key in my box. I went to the lockbox and the door was already opened. Nothing inside. I took the key to the counter and the clerk assured me that it must have been an accident that they put a key in my PO Box, and I had no package. They refused to look into it any further. Now, it seems likely to me that this was my lost package and that they forgot to lock the box when they put the package in and soemone else came along and stole the package out of the box. Of course, the Clerk said that this could not have happened. Does anyone know if I have any recourse against the PO. Is Delivery Confirmation really that useless, or are they not giving me the correct information? The seller certainly is not at fault here at all, but I think the USPS should assume the responsibilty here. ED

Now, it seems likely to me that this was my lost package and that they forgot to lock the box when they put thepackage in and soemone else came along and stole the package out of the box. The key boxes are filled from the rear. Ask for a station tour and have them show you this feature. Bob AZ

My mailbox is filled from the rear but not the lock boxes they put packages in. Not at my Post Office in Phoenix. These are Lockers and they are up against a cement wall. They do not open from the back. They are the same style used att Bus stations and airports. ED
Response:
I have a po box too. It is filled from the rear. Often times, I find mail for the next box. What I do then is, I take that letter, stick my arm all the way thru, and then kinds twist is and insert the letter into that neighboring box. Easier than talking to the postal workers (who might just get angry and shoot me for bothering them, who knows). Anyway, this shows that it would be easy to steal stuff from other boxes by a similar method.
but they might shoot you thinking you are stealing from the other box. — Knight-Toolworks & Custom Planes Custom made wooden planes at reasonable prices See http://www.knight-toolworks.com For prices and ordering instructions. I have a kewl number. During the time they returned to senders mail intended for me, my business license renewal made a u-turn. You think that wasn’t a difficult sort-out? Especially since the license fee increased tenfold after my USPS-generated delinquency. I prevailed with the City, but USPS just frowned, reverted to blank-stare mode and assigned the other guys a new box. Ever since then, and its been ten years or more, my USPS box renewal notices get lost before I get them. I make it a point to pay a couple weeks early, notice be damned. I have a kewl, desirable ( I guess ) PO box number.

Not the case at my post office. They wheel the packages into the lobby and load the boxes from the front. Keys are then taken back inside and put into the recipient’s postal box, from the back, with the rest of the regular mail. alanama — Alana "Success is going from one failure to the next without a loss of enthusiasm." —Winston Churchill
