Question:
We keep hearing about this guy "Leavenworth". Was this a real guy/gal? I’d be interested in finding out a bit more about him/her. Seems he had a lot of time on his/her hands to come up with all these formulas. ….Beth
Oh god, I think I peed myself…
Response:
200 auctions per month is too low. At the very least, you need 70 auctions at any one time. At 7 days per auction, that is more like 300 auctions per month. Anything less gives you a Leavenworth ratio less than unity. See http://www.tinaja.com/glib/ebaysell.pdf
DON! Dammit, I just stuck up for you… THINK ABOUT IT! If you sell oh… lets say LAPTOPS and you sell 200 a month, and make $50 off each after costs (MUCH less than 30:1, closer to 1.05:1) and sell 200 a month, you are doing pretty well wouldn’t you say? Even better, what about Jewellery, if you sell 50 decent rings/pendants a month with an average profit of $100 each you work MAYBE 10 hours a week and make $5000 a month. Not bad for that little work.

Interesting site – never would have believed there were so many train items and available at the same time from a single seller.

Yeah, I’ve got a high speed internet connection and that page you pointed to took anout a minute and a half to load, wow, quite a list Kramer

More impressive to me was his low negative feedback number in relation to his number of transactions. Lots of neutrals, but relatively few negatives … and he kept saying over and over he would’ve refunded if the people had asked. Seems like a great seller to me.

I created a spreadsheet to keep track of auction numbers, winning bidder’s email addresses, paid, packed, shipped, tracking numbers and feedback left. It works for me (even though it isn’t automated so it fills in all the information for me). If you’re already doing this, you should use a database instead.
A database? How smart do you think I am? :)

I really don’t see how it could be overwhelming if you are selling the same things over and over. However, if you are picturing and describing a new item for each auction, that could get busy. A lot of people sell unique items, but to create a streamlined e-Bay business, finding long-term repeat products is much easier. The simplest thing for me is keeping a basic listing format and filling in the blanks for each item. Plus, an auction program of some type. We have a custom-made filemaker database that makes e-mails and labels, etc a breeze. Really, responding to e-mails and sending out notices may be the most tedious part of auctioning, so an organizational program is nice. Another thing: high speed internet access is a must, because if you are trying to list through e-Bay without an auction poster, it can be a slow nightmare. I don’t use turbo lister because it crashes about five minutes in every time I try, so the high speed internet is essential to listing quickly. mjoann
I close about 150 a day right now, I use andale.com because it does most of the work from beginning to end. It is not without its flaws but apparently auctionworks.com is the next best and I have tested it and think it is not as good as Andale. If you do large numbers you can negotiate a fixed monthly rate with them.
Response:
It all depends. If you are selling the same product(s) over and over, it’s no big deal. (unless you’re selling pianos or something). If you have to concurrently scrounge up varied merchandise like collectibles, etc. and do all the shipping yourself, you will have your hands full but it is do-able if you are organized. $19.63, why is that??
There is a sage among us named Don who has said the minimum value of a sale a person can make and still turn a profit is $19.63. I disagree with that and I don’t recall anyone else agreeing, but he continues to say it so everyone pokes fun at him about it, myself included.

ahhh, I see. Yah, I do not agree either. I feel it all depends on the volume you sell and margins of your product.

200 a week!!! wow!!! pretty wild. Takes me a good 4 hours to do 10-12 a night. Of course this will change as I now have some ads that will be used on a weekly basis, as long as the item stays hot. thanks for your words of encouragement. I am new to this thing. (2 days old) (not new to ebay though) but I feel I am keeping very organized so far. We’ll see how things go when the auctions start ending off next week. I have actually had alot of customers using the "buy it now" feature, which is great.

I created a spreadsheet to keep track of auction numbers, winning bidder’s email addresses, paid, packed, shipped, tracking numbers and feedback left. It works for me (even though it isn’t automated so it fills in all the information for me). The other thing is do as little work as possible. In other words, if you don’t have to drive to the post office, don’t do it. Let someone else do it or have them pick the stuff up or … you’re going to be spending many many hours doing eBay. If you sell different stuff the way I do (not necessarily totally different, but different as in different music cd’s, for instance), you’re going to spend a long time making ads, too. You can shorten this time by making templates. This way, all you have to do is change the item description and you’re ready to post (assuming the shipping and what not is the same). Whatever you do, though, don’t sell any item for less than $19.63 or you will lose your shirt. :)
$19.63, why is that?? I am using a template with Frontpage 2002 and it is making things alot easier for me. Something I designed quickly, but it looks good. My supplier is awesome and I am very excited about the future with this and other things that are going to happen. I need to meet with my supplier to buy the items I sell and I do have to go to the post office but I am leaving Friday away from the auctions to do this all. Friday is like my admin day to get organized. My auctions are posted Monday to Thursday. About 12-15 per night. Yes night. Well I appreciate the help and words. thanks all. I imagine I will be around quite alot. Time to buckle down and get it done. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text –

Hello, Have been following this thread. Decided to step up my sales, tried TurboLister but it is real buggy. Have this snipe software that has a column for shipping prices, noticed more than occasionally instead of showing a shipping price it will show the strange comment: "what else can you do" And then I make a couple of posts with TurboLister and damn, I see that same comment on my sales, I know I put in a shipping price, no way I put that comment in. I go back and check, sure enough the shipping price is there, but at the bottom of the page there it is that comment "what else can you do" http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4207844312 Now I know I didn’t put that comment there, on top of that the comment is in a place I don’t have ready access to. Okay, your views on this matter are appreciated, but I’ve sworn off TurboLister, it runs in Win98SE for me, but a couple of other buggy things it has done, not worth the time or effort to delineate here. Gonna go to and look for a replacement, suggestions ? Best Regards, Kramer
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Just out of curiosity, why does turbo lister crash for you? It seems most don’t have a problem. Maybe there is something someone on the NG can do to help? My theory is: its evil! I don’t know what else could be the problem. I have a newer, fast computer with two hard drives, a ton of RAM, all that good stuff. I am running Windoze 1998; I refuse to upgrade because I completely oppose Microsoft. Maybe my OS is the problem. Every time I have tried to use TL, I get to the middle of the first item, and it crashes. I’ve tried re-downloading, reinstalling, etc., but always the same thing. Now that cable finally came to my neighborhood, its not a big deal for me to just list and relist through the web, so I am not really worried about it. mjoann

I never used turbo lister before switching to Win XP (I, too, am opposed to Microsoft, but this computer came with it and I haven’t gotten the cajones to try Linux yet) so it is possible that TL was made for or optimized for XP and won’t really work on 98 (I can hear all the people who use Win 98 and TL typing already). If it doesn’t bother you, there isn’t a need to sweat it. Personally I use TL very little as most of my selling is done on other sites, but when I do use eBay, I find that TL makes life much easier, even if I’m only doing 2-3 items. I don’t have broadband services, either (so half my time is spent uploading pictures to my webserver). As soon as things work out, though, I’ll be switching to some kind of faster connection (right now a new modem would make my connection faster as this one is dead just about).
