Question:
: The above two links have some further detail. I’m sure if you wrote to : VISA and MC they’d be happy to cite exact statutes in each state. Thanks for the info. I’ve seen a number of companies that offer what they call a "cash discount" which is basically another way of saying that they charge people who use credit cards an additional fee. Must be some sort of loophole? Peter
Not a loophole. It’s either one of two scenarios: 1. The company is big enuf to have negotiated that permission with VISA/MC/Novus. eg: Exxon. 2. The company is doing it illegally and simply hasn’t been reported yet. Case in point: I was trying to purchase some computer hardware from a company in CA last year. They told me they’d give a discount if I sent them a money order instead of using a VISA card. I called VISA. That company got their credit privileges revoked. – Dan. — – South Jersey, USA, Earth <http://users.snip.net/~darmok – Consciousness: That annoying time between naps.

http://pages.ebay.com/help/community/png-list.html "Credit Card Surcharges An eBay seller may not charge a fee, often called a "credit card surcharge," when accepting credit card payments. This surcharge, which is an added cost to the buyer over and above the final sale price and shipping/handling, is not allowed under the laws of many states, including California. I believe that what the law states is-you can give a discount for cash but you cannot penalize someone for using a credit card. So, charging back for merchant fees is illegal. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – : It is illegal to pass any processing fees back to the Buyer. Ted, I found it very painless. We used Quick Commerce and it was fairly seamless to get started. Not to say there werent minor glitches but someone was available to help and we haven’t had any problems in last 4 months. I found them at http://domainnameregistration.homestead.com/ These folks have set up a web development and internet marketing resource page on Homestead, a free hosting company. Good site. I list most of my items at eBay well below their market value, in most cases $1 so I have no way of building the cost of sales into the price. I don’t think a buyer would appreciate being asked to pay an extra 10% so I never do this either. Choosing hard to get products that consistently sell for 100% over their cost is how I have been able to enjoy eBay. Alot of work finding these products but rewarding. I feel it is an ‘Auction’ not a retail outlet and the auction is what lures buyers into a sale. Starting bids on common iteams, at market value will only go touched.
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – How about CCNOW? They charge a 10% fee though. I’ve signed up but have yet to try them. I use them – it works out cheaper in the long run for me since my volume of cc orders is very low. Do you pass the fee back to the buyer, split it with the buyer, or just factor it into your opening bid? Chuck

If you’re trying to set up shop in canada (ie through canadian banks), you’re in for a rough rid. Canadian financial institutions are not up to speed with the US when it comes to e-commerce. Be prepared to do a lot of talking on the phone, negociating, and *educating* some bank managers as to the pressing need for simple, secure solutions for canadian commerce. — Dylan <dylan_r(at)yahoo(dot)com

US merchants will find many merchant account providers both on and offline. Start up should be very easy and painless. Costs should range from 0 down to low down. Try not to lease anything if you can help it! Many us merchant account providers are raping the trusting merchants wallet. I agree with the one person who said try and contact 5 merchant account providers before you decide. The bottom line fees you would look at are: 1.Merchant Account Application Fee (some charge some don’t) 2.Virtual Terminal for online real time transaction processing. we suggest purchasing at $599 or less 3.Monthly fees and rates: Charged by Bank or Processor Rates 2.49% + .25 cents (some charge more or less) Monthly minimum with US banks is $25/mo Monthly Statement Fee-generally $10-20/mo Gateway fee for real time transactions: generally 10-15.00/mo All that aside, if you have the right representation and personalized service, it should be very easy and painless! Hi, I am in the process of obtaining this information now for my company. I am in Australia. I find it next to absurd in the amount of time I have spent on this exercise. Mind you I already have a site (although it is a lite site). I have been phoning banks and ISPs and it sounds like there is no real easy painless way of doing it. So far, the banks have informed me that there is a $65 setup fee (cool), 9.5% of transactions that come through (a bit rough), and some other monthly fee of which the person himself couldn’t tell me how much. I am waiting for correspondance in the mail (he couldn’t email it me). Considering the bank I am with made a 2billion dollar profit last year, it is amazing how they are not up to speed, in terms of internet transactions and the way they deal with clients. On the ISP side, I have been quoted $290 per month for SHTTP server. On the otherhand, for a low volume supplier as myself, I would probably better off letting someone else handle that side of things and I just use them to host my shop or something. Hope the above helps. Regards Leigh http://www.leejen.com.au

It is illegal to pass any processing fees back to the Buyer. Fees such as this are considered to be part of your overhead, a factor that taken into consideration (added into) with all your pricing. – Dan. — – South Jersey, USA, Earth <http://users.snip.net/~darmok – Consciousness: That annoying time between naps.
