Ebay's stinky "recommendations" spam!!

Question:

It’s ironic how eBay went to such trouble to spare us from spam by implementing its "contact a user through eBay" system, and cracking down on virtually any solicitation or offer sent by one member to another member, and now they’re basically becoming the dragon they promised to slay.

It reveals that their ulterior motive was control of (and therefore profit) and not any protection for sellers or buyers. — L.V.X., frater mus Old Time Radio (OTR) OpenNap network        http://www.mousetrap.net/OTRnap/         the Great Work, CDR, OTR, scanning          http://www.mousetrap.net/~mouse/               RioVolt mini-review         http://www.mousetrap.net/~mouse/otr/riovolt.html

Face facts.  The real reason ebay does not want people contacting each other is because they don’t want their facilities to be used by people setting up deals without using ebay.  It never should have been a violation to send someone else notice of an auction you were running on ebay, as long as you never notified them again if they requested to opt out. Aren’t these types of email messages – "hey, you lost that auction, but please notice this other auction with the same type of item" – the type of thing that would get a seller kicked off eBay?

It does come to UK I just received it. I get enough junk email without this load as well I’ll be complaining to eBay shortly.

Sure? I got outbid today and I didn’t get anything from eBay. Are you using ebay.co.uk or .com ? — – Tony Sutton – http://www.regionclassified.com – List Your Items! – http://www.hyperboard.co.uk – Discuss on my message board I’m not a complete idiot–several parts are missing.

Response:

Yes, but to be NOT Spam, shouldn’t that be an OPT-IN link?  eBay tells us that we can have a mailing list if someone opts-IN, but they go and do the reverse. I don’t see how they could come up with a list of similar items either. It’s one thing for brand new products, but for the kind of stuff I look at, well, one item may have the age and finishing and detail that I am looking for and another identical item won’t, and wouldn’t ever even make my watch list. We will remember that you have chosen not to receive this type of email and will not send you another one until you tell us you want to receive it. " I just can’t imagine how they’ll be able to furnish a decent, accurate list anyway.   People all write their auctions in different ways, and eBay doesn’t know why you are bidding on a certain item. "The email will display a list of items that are similar to the one you bid on but did not win." How the hell do they determine what a similar item is? especially on rare (ie they really do only appear once in a blue moon) items of which I bid on quite a few. This thing reeks of "One rule for you, another rule for us", as it apperas we as sellers can’t reccomend things to our bidders but eBay can… — Rid

Oh, they’ll introduce some new programming which will cause Ebay to blow up … I’m already getting a lot of errors when I hit the "submit" button … last night around 4:00 a.m. things were really screwed up.

Yep.  On the bright side, it means that you sellers look considerably better to us buyers than eBay does. What I think is particularly nasty about this is that it’s not included in the regular user preferences.  Why not?  Why should a buyer need to keep track of more than one place to preclude spam from this company? Response:

Yeah I had one of those mails, I made a bid on an item but I was outbidded and I lost the auction, no problem but I got this screwball mail. I didn’t ask for this, all I want is to shut it off. Besides, if I want similar items I use my "fav" searches which is really handy. —

I just got one of these … I ran the whole thing through SpamCop and sent a nasty e-mail message with it to Ebay. Why should I have to check whether or not I want to receive this garbage with each auction? There should be a setting in My Ebay which allows you to NOT get this trash … always!! (Correct me if there already is such a setting … this page is very ambiguous as to whether you won’t get mail at all, or just for a particular auction — http://pages.ebay.com/search/items/recommendations_learnmore.html)

The notices should be strictly opt-in, rather than opt out.  Ebay could then put in an announcement of it’s availability for those interested. Personally, I’m not interested in their spam, and I doubt if many others are. Ebay must think they’re big enough that it isn’t spam.  Bull.  It still is.
