Question:
Any help is soooo very welcome!!! I’ve been selling on ebay for about two years now, and in that time, about 75% of all people who say they’re sending a MO never send it. So now I’m very very clear in my listings that I accept Paypal only. But lately, I’ve had a rash of people hit Buy It Now and then ask if they can pay by MO… I let a couple do it and of course, some didn’t pay and some took weeks to send their MO (no suprise) Do I have any rights in this area as a seller? Most of the time I list similar items at the same time to drive up traffic, so if I have to relist weeks later, the chance of it selling is greatly reduced… Anyone?

You have the right to refuse and return payments that do not conform to the payment options described in your listing. Doing so with mail-in payments is risky and troublesome. Better to just cash them and ship, generally speaking. Then add the moron to your blocked-bidders list. You can require immediate payment with PayPal on any auction listing that has a BIN, or on any fixed-price listing. See the payment options in your listing software. If someone who clicks BIN doesn’t pay immediately, the listing continues. If someone places a bid, the BIN and "immediate payment" disappear; you may still end up with a mail-in payment. You can also go to My eBay – Preferences – Buyer Requirements. Click on "Show" to the right of Buyer Requirements, then click "Edit." Check the box to "block buyers who don’t have a PayPal account." No one can bid or BIN unless they have a PayPal account. A boneheaded winner may still mail payment, though.

That’s odd. Most of my buyers use PayPal but some send MOs and I don’t have anywhere near this kind of non-pay ratio with MOs or any other type of payment. What are you selling? Ed

With Buy It Now, it’s possible to require immediate payment via paypal–not just stating it in your auction terms, but an actual feature by which the bidder has to pay as part of the BIN process. That should eliminate the problem, at least in your BIN sales. <http://pages.ebay.com/help/sell/immediatepayment.html -Bertha — Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy. –Benjamin Franklin

As a seller, you definitely have rights. If your auction says paypal only and they bid (or use BIN) and ask after they do if they can send a money order, the answer should be no as the auction states paypal only. If they can’t or won’t use paypal, then you file NPB, stating "auction terms weren’t followed". They don’t have a leg to stand on. In my personal experience, I have had people wait 10-14 days before paying by paypal … and some wouldn’t pay at all even though I accepted paypal at one time. In other words, there is no easy answer for stupid people, but at least you won’t be beat out of any FVF fees.
