Should I accept Paypal or BillPoint

Question:

My thinking goes this way: Merchant account:  costs the seller Billpoint:  costs the seller Bidpay:  costs the buyer Paypal:  free all around. Looks like a no-brainer to me.  I get paid for about 80% of my auctions with PayPal, and about half of those I get the $5 referral bonus.  Except a few days a few weeks ago I’ve never had any trouble logging on, and when I withdraw money it always goes flawlessly.  I think its fantastic. – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – If you already have a merchant account you are using, I don’t see the point of getting either one.  Paypal and BillPoint are really more options for those of us who can’t justify the expense of a merchant account just for eBay, in my opinion. Richard Ward I have been selling on Ebay for about 8 months and can accept any card except Discover and process them at home.  I have only had two people ask if I accept Paypal.  I am wondering if I am missing bids because I don’t accept those forms of payment.  I really don’t understand how they work, or what is the difference between the two. With PayPal there are no chargebacks, so you’re not at the mercy of some jerk who decides to dispute a charge And it’s free, whereas BillPoint charges, and has chargebacks. Although I much prefer a crisp green postal m.o. myself, if I had to pick, PayPal would be it

Most Merchant Accounts are Physical Point-Of-Sale.  IE, swipe the card or via telephone.  The agreements specifically prohibit internet sales.   You have to get a special account for that.  Then you have to pay a processor $ $ $ to do the processing. I accept Visa, Mastercard, and Discover here. But for online payments, I use PayPal. – Dan. — – South Jersey, USA, Earth  <http://hamsterdance.com/ – My mind not only wanders, sometimes it leaves completely.

No chargebacks?

Response:

I avoided Billpoint because of the fees. If you can take inernational cards on your current merchant set up, then I don’t think they really have much to offer you. However, I have read in other forums that there most certainly are people who won’t bid if the seller doesn’t accept PayPal.  Or, they will look to see if the same item is available from another seller who does. All things being equal, if I see two listings for an item the listing that offers PayPal as a payment option will get my bid.

Response:

WRONG People trust PayPal.  They might not trust your own home based credit card acceptance.  PayPal is free and easy to use and you get your money fast. Forget Billpoint.  Its a pain in the you know where.

I would sign up for PayPal, just because you’ve had customers ask for it. It doesn’t cost you anything, and with people being so very leary of using their cards online, I’d offer them any option that lets them feel comfortable using it. I’d hate to see you lose a credit card sale because someone didn’t want to take the chance of using your shopping cart or emailing a card number. FWIW, Lisa

Paypal is a free service.  The person can pay you with their credit card or have funds transferred from their account.  How it works is the person pays paypal who in turn pays you.  You can withdraw the funds when ever you want it takes 3-5 days for an electronic transfer or about 7 days to get a paper check in the mail. I don’t know a lot about Billpoint but they do charge a fee. I would accept paypal if I were you, it’s free and it’s nice to have your money right away. Elke
