Question:
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – The Vets on my 8th ID newsgroup are upset about this auction…6557830597. The Seller says the Purple Heart Medal for sale was awarded to a soldier who was KIA in WWII. Members want to know if Ebay has any rules against this type of sale. I believe is just a military collectible. My 2 cents, which are probably already in circulation: Vets should think about the things for which they fought, including property rights. If I can sell whatever I earned with my money, I can surely sell whatever I earned with my blood. A medal is not public property, it is my property. Impersonating a decorated vet is despicable and should be punished. But limiting the property rights of vets and their heirs does not address that problem.
Absolutely. And my husband (a Vietnam Veteran) totally agrees. The medal (and our flag) are only symbols. If we’re going to start jailing people for desecrating or selling them, I propose we start with those ‘patriots’ with the ragged ones waving from their car windows. Kris If a five-year-old draws a flag on a piece of paper, it’s a flag Does Orrin Hatch really want to make it unconstitutional to throw it away?

It’s called "provenance," and it is necessary in the collectibles market. Needs some backup documentation, though.

My retired-career-navy husband agrees with you and your husband. He gets really annoyed over the virtual worship of the flag. Says he’d give his life to defend the Constitution but not a piece of fabric that’s only a symbol of that document and its meaning. Probably. How about those little 1"x2" paper flags on toothpicks that get stuck into cupcakes during certain holidays? — Ty Who is mostly just a slightly skewed Donna Reed A patriot must always be ready to defend his country against his government. –Edward Abbey

Currently, only the sale of the Medal of Honor is illegal in the U. S. Many vets are upset about the movie, "Wedding Crashers," which includes a scene in which the main characters use the Purple Heart Medal and sob-stories of combat to get free drinks and pick up chicks. Some vets want to ban all sales of military decorations. Sen. Ken Salazar introduced a bill in July that would criminalize distribution of phony medals and fraudulent claims to have earned them. You might want to get your vets to back that one. http://www.homeofheroes.com/herobill/index.html

We’re going to need another "flag amendment" to make it a felony to lick the flag? Kris

Yes, I think if you left out the story it would be OK. I checked the listings, and there over a dozen PH for sale. I think its a gimmick to grab a higher price.

It’s not (yet) illegal to sell a Purple Heart, but it is illegal to wear one you did not earn yourself, and it is illegal to display it (without wearing it) unless you are a descendant or relative if the one who earned it – that’s my recollection at any rate.
