Question:
Brand new on Musician’s Friend, you can get one for $749.99- figure half price for used gear as a yardstick, then deduct another 20-25% for having refinished it…. I’d say best price, probably $350.00. Sorry if that’s not what you wanted to hear.
I’d say thats a reasonable figure for ther low end. If he gets lucky, maybe 4-$450. Never Forget http://www.livingtributes.com/livingtribute.php?memid=842

If you hide a $50 bill in the control panel, I will give you $50 for it.
– Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – I’m thinking about selling my guitar and want to get an idea of what it’s worth. I know that there are other ways of checking the market for my guitar but because I have modified the finish of this guitar, I think I’d be comparing apples to oranges. So I’m asking people to visit www.geocities.com/gregrjones/gear.htm and give me an honest assessment on what I could ask for the Ibanez SC420 guitar on this page. The guitar was originally red but I stripped the paint and gave it a natural finish in tunge oil. The guitar looks nice but the finish is not perfect. Under bright light, one can see little sand lines. As for the guitar itself, it plays wonderfully and has a great tone. I currently have Dimarzio pickups in it but I will be selling it with it’s stock pickups. If anyone wants to make me an offer go ahead, but I plan on putting it on Ebay once I can properly assess it’s value. I believe the guitar lists for around $1000. Thanks, Greg

It’s worth whatever someone is willing to pay for it. It’s probably been devalued by stripping the original finish tho’. If anyone wants to make me an offer go ahead, but I plan on putting it on Ebay once I can properly assess it’s value.
eBay is *the* arbiter of values. If you list it properly with good photos you *will* get what it is worth but that might be less than you hope for… Steve.

for… Exactly. Of course, lots of people don’t understand auctions and put guitars up with ridiculous starting bids (I had someone say "that has to be the start bid, it’s the middle value from the blue book1"). Start at $1.00 and see what it does. I’ll also usually include a realistic but optimistic Buy It Now price if I’m selling a nice guitar, but I don’t think yours qualifies as a nice guitar based on your description (no offense). If you set a BIN, you have to have a reserve, which I’ll generally set a bit under what I consider the low end of value of the guitar, just to keep the BIN alive for a while. If you set opening bid too high, people simply won’t bid. getting people to bid early and often is important to get value up. The more someone watches an auction and incrementally bids it up, the more they develop a "my guitar" mentality. the best sales are when you get two different people who decide it is "my guitar." They become emotionally attached…cha-ching! A realistic but high-end BIN is good in cases where people start going for it, and someone just decided that paying an extra 50-100 for the certainty of purchase is worth it. High reserves are moronic. sometimes you get "nibblers", but generally I find them irritating as a buyer. I know what a guitar I’m bidding on is worth, but some folks just seem to think their shit don’t stink. Check ebay completed auctions for the same guitar to determine approximate value for setting reserve/BIN if necessary. However, the best way to determine true value in today’s open market is to have a great description, great pictures, low start and no reserve. all that said, a guitar with a "list" price of $1000 usually goes for 700 or so new in a store, so an excellent used one should only be 500-600 on ebay, and one that’s been hacked by an amateur is maybe 300-400, and that may be high (no offense, but from a buyer’s point of view that’s what your guitar is). I haven’t checked on what they sell for strret value or ebay prices, but these are roughly accurate guidelines on the prices IMHO. HEre’s a link to an auction of mine that ended recently. Bought the guitar for under market value in December (the seller had it listed in the antique musical instrument category for some unknown reason), sold it for a decent profit. Reserve was set at $700. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=2384&item=2519… – Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Steve.
