where do you get your items for resale?

Question:

- Hide quoted text — Show quoted text – Where do you guys get your items that you sell on eBay? I’ve had some success going to yard sales and reselling items. You have to really be careful though. You have to know what stuff will sell for or you can take a loss. Taylor Flea markets, estate sales, traditional auctions, the occasional garage sale.  From time to time I hit antique malls in out of the way areas. The key thing is knowing your merchandise better than the people selling it.  Otherwise you’re doomed.  Box lots at traditional auctions can be a treasure trove, especially the ones with lots of utter crap in them. You’ll generally get a much cheaper ending bid on a box with 20 pieces of worthless junk and a couple of really nice pieces than you would on a box with just the couple of really nice pieces.  I bought a box of Wedgewood Edme a year or so ago, had well over a hundred pieces in it. All the bowls were chipped and cracked, almost all the cups, all of which were on top.  On the bottom of the box was a stack of luncheon plates, all pristine.  I bought the box for $10, sold the little bit of good stuff that was there for $150, threw most of the rest away. Make that Wedgwood. It’s been a long day… Richard Ward

Cripes! For me it’s hard *not* to find items for resale. My friends want me to list stuff. My family wants me to list stuff. My neighbor wants me to list stuff he doesn’t have time to list.  I went to Meijer’s, just for milk, and they were pulling big racks of clearance merchandise out onto the sidewalk. The woman told me to make her any offer and she would take it. I go to yard sales, auctions, thrift stores, junk shops, pawn shops…. Good thing I have a van. Angie

Thanks for the reply Richard and Angie. Do you guys make enough off of your eBay earnings to actually make a living at it? Taylor

I don’t, but I choose not to. My husband and I both agree that we could if we had to. After the kids are a little older, we might do more. But I have been doing it for a couple of years now. Are you thinking about starting? Angie

Yes, I would really like to. I have already been selling a little bit. I sold a few items I picked up at yard sales. Taylor
